Let me first say that I only read this sequel because one of the teachers I work with was so enthusiastic about how much I would love it. Well, once again, this is a highly readable book, great for long solo trips and such, and the main character is actually almost tolerable in this one. There are brief moments (all too few, actually, but it's certainly a step in the right direction, anyway) when Paul actually seems to have learned that different doesn't necessarily mean bad. Still, he remains a...more

As delightful as I found this book's predecessor, this attempt to duplicate was dreadful. Awful. Painful. Irritatingly pathetic. A "look how much work it takes to bore me" endeavour. I didn't even finish it, and I've finished Dickens, for chrissake. It is the actual merde that it refers to.

The sequel to 'A Year in the Merde', this book possesses many of the same characteristics as its prequel. I think this is a fun vacation read, one where it doesn't matter if you put it down for a month at a time in between reads.... Definatly worth reading if you enjoyed the first one.

Funny story - he's good at giving you an exact feeling of how it feels to live abroad, and how you have to learn to change your way of thinking when living abroad.
"When in Rome..." lol

An easy read, and the plot was a little different, although it somewhat wandered & I didn't feel like different parts of the story necessarily tied together well. But enjoyable overall.

Not quite as entertaining as A Year in the Merde but still enjoyable. Both the story and the protagonist move/grow suitably. Humourous light reading.

Way more contrived than the first. If you've ever lived with the French/had to deal with them, you will definitely find some parts amusing.

Hopefully this is as good as the first. I have never read a book that is a straight sequel.

Better than the first part, but the huge success these books have had baffles me still.
