Usually I have more patience than this. I can keep pushing through almost any book in the hope of it turning into a good read. But this? For some reason, there is no patience. I’m done. I am bored and I am irritated and I just want to move onto a book I might actually like.

More often than not, I like being dropped into a story and left to catch up—in moderation, of course. I don’t enjoy huge info dumps or long pages of introspection to introduce me to a character, but I still need something
Jesse returns to New Orleans post-Katrina to hunt the vampires that killed her sister and left her infected with a demon that drives her to crave blood. Jesse is woefully unprepared to fight the vampires but luckily runs into a real vampire hunter, Maddox, who recognizes her unusual status as a human infected but not turned into a vampire. Together they and other hunters try to staunch the ever increasing number of vampires that may be signalling the End of Days.

I enjoyed this book a great deal.

Huh this was sorta pretentious it had illusions of grandeur but ened up lacking all ways but one...the setting was amazingly done...I could see everything in my head rally well...

But I really didn't like the rest of the book, and i nearly added it to my DNF shelf a time or two....but I sloughed through, though it still surprises me that I made it to the end!

Right from the start the heroine bugged me. She had a tstl moment in the first couple pages..I know I was suppos

Jesse was taken and attacked along with her sister. But unlike her sister she survived, but she can feel the demon inside her growing from her infection. Scarred, starving, and homeless, she seeks to become a vampire slayer but bungles the job badly. Then, she i

This book left me in a quandary after reading other reveiws i thought the main female lead would turn out to be weak but far from this i found her to be strong her iron will to hold onto who she was even with the demon that wanted to consume her soul from within. She showed so much strength of character, and her willingness to try and fight with her body, a body that was failing from the battle that raged within her was amazing iam hoping to see so much more of the physical battle and kick butt a ...more

When I found out that I'd be recieving an Arc of Darkness Descending I was ecstatic. When it finally arrived in the mail I was literally jumping up and down with joy. Since seeing the cover and reading the blurb it's been on the top of my wishlist.

Wow! I just LOVED this book! I had so much trouble putting it down. A dark and exciting new world has been opened up to us.

Each description of the towns and the damage that had been done by (cyclone) Katrina are so well written you can just picture ev

This new dark paranormal world blew me away!

In the midst of a world where fallen angels are turned vampires that seek to rule the world, Jesse Burke struggles to maintain her humanity after being attacked but not turned. In her quest to remain human, Jesse decides to become a vampire slayer and hunt down the beasts that not only attacked her, but also took her sister away from her. Having no experience and guidance, s
This is my first experience with Devyn Quinn ... and I like it. The myth is not very different, Vampires are Fallen Angels that feed upon humans (a race called Telave), the fledglings are Kindreds, and the sentinels that are immune to the bloodlust are Palindromes. It's not a difficult "world-building" to follow.

In this post-Katrina New Orleans, Jesse is an exception. She's the only female that can survive bloodlust, with demon inside of her. She's not a vampire nor Palindrome (since all Palindr

I enjoyed this book. In fact with all the mixed reviews I was kinda worried that I wouldn't enjoy it at all. This had just enough action to keep me happy. Small amount of lovin. The thing is that I enjoyed this book but then around the last 100 pages or so it just kinda was a let down. I know the ending was a cliff hanger of sorts for the next book. But somewhere along the way I lost some interest. So yes the characters were enjoyable. The storyline was pretty good. But I didn't love it the way ...more

Urban Fantastic! Astonishing! Ingenious! Darkness Descending by Devyn Quinn is a paranormal junkie's dream! Devyn Quinn has an undeniable melismatic flourish for spinning a truly wonderful paranormal! Vampires trying to annihilate mankind in a post Katrina New Orleans was pure brilliance. This incredible new view on the origins of vampires is a manifestation of creativity and sensational writing. Jesse Burke has overcome the impossible and she has intrigued me, I want to know more. Did Not Finish

This book has been promoted as being a mix of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. In my opinion, however, it was straight up PNR through and through. And unfortunately, the romance was incredibly rushed, forced, unbelievable, underdeveloped, and utterly devoid of chemistry. I found myself rolling my eyes way too much and quite frankly, just not giving a damn. Consequently, after a handful of chapters (plus a bit of halfhearted skimming), I finally decided that the story was just

I really found this book to be amazing. I loved how the story was told. The main character Jesse was tough yet vunerable. Maddox is dark and tough but there is a gentleness in him. This is a dark and grity fantasy taking place in New Orleans and a must read.

Im kind of torn about that one...
I liked the end a lot better than the first half of the book, which was kind of slow paced. I guess theres always the problem of introducing the reader to a new world in the first book in a series, setting up the worldbuiling and introducing the characters without slowing down the story.
The concept of vampires in Darkness Descending is interesting and original enough that you dont feel like youre reading just another book about vampires.
I also kind of liked Ma

*possible mini (like a speck of a) spoiler in paragraph 6, close your eyes when you get to it... but I don't think it would spoil the reading for anyone.

This was another book that I got when I was at AAD Philadelphia last year, and yes I know, it has taken me a while to get to it, but in my defence I got so many fantastic books and this is another good one! It is the first in what I think could be an intriguing series but it is also a book which seems to polarise its audience. Between those who

What a huge disappointment...

At fifty page, it seemed really promising but the more the story went and the more it fell flat and wasn't that great. The idead behind Darkness Descending is that vampirism is a virus, a sort of demon or parasite that takes control of his host with the "usual" bite. And there's the Palindrome, humans that are immortals and immune to the bites of these evil creatures and a sort of warriors of the human race.

The story begin when one of those Palindrome , Maddox de Val

Armageddon... That's what New Orleans has turned into... All because of hurricane Katrina. Well not really... it's just the state of the environment. The armageddon that is mentioned about is escalating number of Vampires. In this book, vampires are actually demons. Human shells inhabited by demons.

Anyway... it's a 3.5 actually. It had a promising start and an entertaining end... but the middle part was sort of dragging. :/ I guess most of the book was focused on describing the derelict state o

This is the second book by this author that I have tried but wasn't able to finish. I think she might not be for me. With this book I found the heroine a little TSTL with her actions. Maddox kept trying to tell her things to help her stay alive at the start, but it was like pulling teeth for her to even listen to him. Of course he wasn't much better when Jesse started to tell her story, he wouldn't believe her without proof and even then didn't really want to. I just couldn't handle it any more ...more

Vampires are the new craze and while I loved Quinn's mermaid novels, this one is a dark one. The main character is mediocre at best. And while I forced myself to finish this book-for I had to give it a chance- I was utterly flabbergasted as to why Jesse stayed with Maddox. Yes, in reality people have flaws, they make mistakes, but I do not care for infidelity in books. It's horrible enough in reality don't need it in the books I read to escape reality. Overall the book was okay. Probably won't r ...more

In a nutshell, a somewhat interesting if not flawed story with enough mystery to keep the pages turning. I liked the slight spin on vampires and how it related to the main character, but the romantic connection between Jesse and Maddox felt forced (maybe b/c it was based solely upon sex). There are several moments when characters act in opposition to their personalities or mind/skill sets, which weakened the story. 3.25 stars.
This book fell sadly short of my expectations. While it was not a bad book... it wasn't that great. I'm not really sure what I didn't like about it. It felt... unfinished. Sort of like it hadn't been edited before it went to publication. The cover art is great, and the idea of the book is a good one. I just wasn't impressed by the story and I won't go out of my way to look for the next book in the series.

Got to page 108 and just could not chew any more of this junk. This makes about #3 of books I couldn't finish in the past 10 years.
She is supposed to be the main character in a new series.... she's a messed up sicko. Maddox had some possibilities, but for having learned lessons he let this nut case into his home. I'm done, this book is headed nowhere for me.

Although it should have been easy to sympathise with the main characters I just couldn't connect with them and found the book rather flat. Not sure I'd go out of my way to pick up the next one. I have read other books by this author and have enjoyed them so maybe it's just this particular book that hasn't worked too well for me.

Devyn Quinn lives in the scenic Southwest, though she has called several other states home. She is a huge fan of dark gothic music & shoot-’em-up action movies. But reading is her first love and Devyn spends too much time with history books, as well as feeding her addiction for celebrity biographies. She especially enjoys reading books on Hollywood before the 1960′s and is crazy about Marilyn ...more
