I think I had a smile on my face while listening to this audio book. Gerald Durrell had an unusual job travelling the world to bring exotic animals including birds and insects back to the UK for placement in zoos. Today this seems politically incorrect but back then it was acceptable and Durrell was diligent in taking care of his animals and making sure they did not suffer. He was in his element when taking care of baby foster animals and frequently slept with them in his bed. Amazingly his wife ...more

Gerald Durrell's writing never fails to enchant me. He finds the best, most strange and most beautiful creatures and brings them to life on the page in vivid, noisy, hilarious, colour. I may be an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy, but his writing will always be one of my exceptions.

Another enjoyable Gerald Durrell book. This was a selection of short stories about various encounters that Durrell has had over the years - based on a few themes, such as hand raising creatures, catching animals from the wild etc. I particularly enjoyed the tale of the marmoset that lived with Durrell in his house for 8 years.
Gabriel Sommer
Discussing the origin and explanation of certain aspects of nature, Durrell describes the roles and significance of decisions made by animals in nature. With this, Durrell touches upon an interesting topic, answering many questions relating animals and nature.

You could say that this book is a collection of all the funny things that happened to Durrell during his travels and all the stories are great, the highlight being Sarah the Giant Anteater. It's a strong collection.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I listened to the audiobook and re-listened to the portion about Sarah the giant anteater a couple of times, grinning ear to ear each time.

If you enjoy animal stories, try this book. It's quite delightful.

Enough good things can't be said about Gerald Durrell and his amazing (true) animal stories. Touching, clever, interesting, very witty and thoroughly compelling. I have seven of his books already, and my collection is steadily growing.

Highly recommended.

A book based on Gerald Durrell's radio broadcasts, published in 1958, a couple of years after his masterpiece; My Family and Other Animals. A series of interesting facts and anecdotes, but nowhere near as glorious a read as MFAOA. Presumably better heard than read.

An incredibly vivid look into the worlds of various creatures. Astoundingly descriptive, it encourages the reader to learn more of the animal customs and flares up curiosity about the natural world.

If you are watching the mini series 'The Durrell's of Corfu' you might enjoy Gerald Durrell's 'Encounters with Animals' as much as I have!

If you love animals - anything by Gerald Durrell is a fabulous read - and worth reading aloud.

Durrell's descriptive powers are so excellent, I now really want to own several exotic animals myself.

Gerald "Gerry" Malcolm Durrell was born in India in 1925. His family settled on Corfu when Durrell was a boy and he spent his time studying its wildlife. He relates these experiences in the trilogy beginning with My Family and Other Animals, and continuing with Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods. In his books he writes with wry humour and great perception about both the humans ...more
