Chicks are awesome--and never more so than when they are kicking some serious vampire/werewolf/demon/monster butt.

Chicks Kick Butt is an anthology that features one of the best things about the urban fantasy genre: strong, independent, and intelligent heroines who are quite capable of solving their own problems and slaying their own dragons (or demons, as the case may be)....more

This book is very misleading. Rather than being a collection of stories celebrating women who are both strong and feminine, it is simply various short sequels, prequels and spin-off stories from popular urban fantasy series. Some of them are mildly entertaining, but most are not. Or at least, they're not to those who, like me, are unfamiliar with the series they come from.

Most of the stories cannot be appreciated if you aren't already a hardcore fan and in love with the characters. Seeing as I...more

5 stars for In Vino Veritas (Dorina Basarab 2.1) by Karen Chance:
This short story is a nice addition to the Dorina Basarab series.

The title CHICKS KICK BUTT sounds totally cliché and dumb and silly. But it's totally fun and entertaining. CHICKS is a short story compilation of several popular female Urban Fantasy authors—some you've heard of and some you haven't—and other than a couple of mediocre entries, is a solid group of stories.

"Shiny" by Rachel Caine starts off the book with a story from this popular author's Weather Warden series. Joanne has weather magic, and her boyfriend David is a powerful Djinn. On an outing t...more

The best story for me in this collection.

Shiny by Rachel Caine 3 stars
Part of her Weather Warden series

Hunt by Rachel Vincent 3 stars
Part of her Shifters series. Not bad the heroine was a lot less whiny than Faith..

Monsters by Lilith Saintcrow 3.5stars
Not part of a series. Interesting though.

Vampires Prefer Blondes by P.N. Elrod 3stars
Old time mystery feel to this one.
Plot a little confusing but I did enjoy it.

There are 13 stories in this book, most of them are short, but there are two longer ones as well. Since several of the stories belong to ongoing series, I decided to return to read those after I catch up with their universes. These stories were:

Shiny by Rachel Caine: A story from her Weather Warden series, which I plan on continuing some time soon;

Double Dead by Cheyenne McCray: I have yet to read any of McCray's books, but it seemed counter-productive to begin with this short story, especially

As indicated by the title, Chicks Kick Butt is an anthology featuring heroines who might not mind being referred to as damsels but who would certainly take offense to the name if paired with the words "in distress" and the implications that accompany such a label. Though these women often find themselves in no small amount of trouble, they prefer to fight their own battles with sharp minds, sharp weapons, and sharp figurative and literal claws. Majority of the stories in this action-packed colle...more

I am not familiar with about half of the contributors to this book so I may be missing quite a bit of a story BUT the anthology contributions are supposed to be able to stand on their own. I enjoy anthologies because this is how I become acquainted with new stories/authors.

Shiny by Rachel Caine—3 stars
(Weather Warden series)—Joanne and David encounter a New Djinn as she is doing a photo shoot. Chaos ensues and Joanne uses her warden powers to try to stop bad things from happening.

Anthology filled with kick ass women who don´t take crap from no one and don´t need no knight with shining armour.
Rachel Caine´s Shiny, Joanne and David goes head to head with a djinn on the run.
Karen Chance´s In Vino Veritas, dhampire Dorina challenges a gang of vampires in her own way.
Rachel Vincent´s Hunt, Dani, a werecat, goes camping with friends. A more serious story with blood and murder and you feel sorry for Dani and her suffering.
Lilith Saintcrow´s Monsters, Eleni is out for revenge a...more

Now this is more like it... these leading ladies really do 'kick' it. Most of these stories are connected to long running series, some of which are complete so it was fun to get an encore from favorite characters I haven't seen in awhile. But while most popular urban fantasy authors take us to their established worlds, there are a few who give us glimpses of new ones – there are a few that I really hope I get to visit again.

This has to be the coolest anthology ever! Chicks Kick Butt is an urban fantasy anthology with 13 incredible short stories from 13 incredible authors!

Since anthologies are hard to review, I'm breaking this down by each story, so here goes in the order that they are in:

Shiny by Rachel Caine
Love the Weather Warden series and it was fun to be back with Joanne and David! Shiny includes an awesome car chase with Joanne behind the wheel trying to track down another Djinn. One with a major attitude pro...more

Chicks Kick Butt Edited by Rachel Caine and Kerrie L. Hughes[return][return]Collection of urban fantasy stories featuring strong female protagonists, some human and some not, pitted against the darkest of the dark. Their victories are sometimes pyrrhic, but each gain, keeps our mundane streets safe.[return][return]I found all of the stories eminently readable, with nicely varied examples of the theme of the anthology. Like all anthologies, some stories are better than others. But, I loved the theme! Kick-ass heroines are found most often in the paranormal and urban fantasy stories, and there are a lot to enjoy in this anthology!

These were my faves, but other readers might have different faes:

Rachel Caine gives us a light hearted Weather Warden story in "Shiny" with a mischievous young Djinn who interrupts Joanne and David's plans for a nice picnic.

Rachel Vincent's "Hunt" has werecat Abby's camping weekend wit...more

It was ok. I've read the Weather Warden series of course and it's always fun to find short stories of previous favorite series. I'm always tempted to give at least 4 stars to these things in consideration to previously well built up series but I find this one inconsistent. It's written well enough and the quality is consistent of the Weather Warden but the time line is confusing. I just don'T know when to insert it. It's one problem for me when I liked a series well....more

Overall a good compilation of stories starring strong female protagonists. Some of the stories are chapters taken from pre-existing series, and some are stand alone.

I read a review stating that you had to already be a fan of the different characters; I disagree, because even though I dislike "jumping in at the middle" of a story, they were good enough to get me curious about reading more from those authors.

This book introduced me to authors I didn't know about before and I became a fan of at l

Fun collection of short stories showcasing the work of several authors in the field Felicia Day terms, rather aptly, "vaginal fantasy." The protagonists are all female bad-asses, usually with paranormal powers that they use to take on other denizens of the otherworld or those that prey on them. It doesn't make for challenging reading, but it's highly entertaining, and is a great way to discover new authors.

Such as P. N. Elrod and Carole Nelson Douglas, who wrote my personal favorite stories of t...more

When all of these anthologies started coming out I thought it was kind of annoying, a desperate sales technique to attach a famous author to several unknowns and convince people to buy a book. But I was wrong, it's a great way to find new authors that I might not have tried otherwise. And a book like this feature all successful authors just trying to entertain us and introduce us to their work through a new avenue. Even though I'm not normally a fan of short stories or novellas, it is a fun way...more

As the title indicates this is an anthology of urban fantasy women kicking butts! I knew only about half of the series featured in this book, but I enjoyed both new and familiar girls kicking butt.
I especially enjoyed Karen Chance's short story about Dorina getting into a drinking bet with Chang the Chinese Vampire boss. There was no serious butt kicking in this story, however the funny banter and drunk Dorry was just great entertainment. I love the touching scene in the end with Louis-Cesare....more

I received this collection of stories through the first reads program.

I am not really that familiar with the urban fantasy genre, so this book was a great way to educate myself without committing to an entire series, since it seems like most urban fantasy novels are not stand-alone fiction. For the most part, the stories were enjoyable and fast-paced (there were only two or three that I didn't enjoy). I also like the idea of the spotlight being on strong female leads.

I recommend this book for...more

This is a collection of 13 stories by various authors.Nine of the thirteen stories are part of series. Most of the stories are contemporary paranormal fantasies(urban fantasy). One story is a sword and sorcery fantasy. The last story is set in the 1930's around Chicago.

These may be damsels in distress but they are not waiting for anybody to come and rescue them. They are all more than capable of taking care of themselves. The ladies face everything from werewoves to vampires, demons to human slavers....more

I won this book in Goodreads First Reads.
This anthology is full of fun, fiesty females who don't play the damsel in distress card. Each one demands respect and continues to earn it. Many of the stories in this book take place in their respected universes. For example, Rachel Cain's story "Shiny" takes place in the world of Weather Wardens. This book has novellas from authors Rachel Cain, Karen Chance, Rachel Vincent, Lilith Saintcrow, L.A. Banks, Cheyenne McCray, Susan Krinard, P.N.Elrod, Jeanne...more

A mixed bag of short stories featuring strong women protagonists in scifi/fantasy settings. I didn't know many of the authors involved -- I'd only read 2 of them (L.A. Banks and Lilith Saintcrow).

My favourite stories: "In Vino Veritas," Karen Chance; "Monsters," Saintcrow; "Nine-Tenths of the Law," Jenna Black; and "Monster Mash," Carole Nelson Douglas.

My interests definitely don't cover fey, necromancers, or nearly incomprehensible Norse mythology, so a few of these stories were less relevant...more

I skimmed through the authors I didn't already know about, but they didn't grab my attention.

The authors I do read, did not disappoint. Shine by Rachel Caine brought back Joanne and David. It had been such a long time since I read anything from the Weather Warden series. Even though the story was a little boring, I enjoyed it. In Vino Veritas by Karen Chance was one of my favorites. Dorina gets in to trouble with a vampire gang and I loved the title. Abby kicked ass in Hunt by Rachel Vincent. M...more

I generally do not like short story compilations as the stories are simply not long enought to create either a strong emotional character or any depth to the world building. Add to that, truncated wtf endings and I usually cringe at these things and only read them if I recognize several authors. This one was not bad. I will recommend it for the Karen Chance cause I likes my Dorina stories. The Rachel Vincent, Lilith Saintcrow, Elizabeth Vaughn and the Jenna Black were also fun. Everything else I...more

Superman=depressing, not a whole lot of investment allowed in characters although they are strong ones; plot takes over in a typical cops and robbers/bad girl with power fashion. won't read her again.

Monster Mash=uninteresting, lack of character investment, did not finish; prob won't read her again

Wanted=typical, annoying, depressing; will not read again-get a new idea besides bounty hunter

The Rachel Vincent story is about Abby. Jace shows up at some point. That's all I can tell from the Amazon preview. From her "Shifters" series, which I've otherwise completed.

04/12/2012 - Read the Rachel Vincent story. Abby is camping with four human friends when three hunters invade their camp. Much more would probably hit spoilers, given the story is so short. Jace is the only other regular character from the series that shows up. 4 stars

The last story was super cool! I started a little confused, but it didn't take long to get really into it. And then it totally twisted around and ended totally different than I'd expected! I love Meg the main charachter and would like to know more about her powers. And more about that world!!! All of it!!! I want to know more. ~ Overall, "Chicks Kick Butt" well, it kicks butt! I have never read a collection of short stories before, but I kinda like it. The only drawback was that it was too easy...more

Short story writing and novel writing are vastly different arts. Novel writers rarely make good short stories writers. The disciplines and guidelines involved are as different as those of haiku as opposed to epic verse.

A problem with an anthology of this sort is that the authors are writing about established charactors with their own individual canons. This removes the need, in some views, to create a believable world for the reader within the constraints of the short story form. In other words,...more
