Reading this book reminded me of why I rarely read prose essays for pleasure: I was rather annoyed by the repetitiveness and meandering wordiness of the writing style. In this book, Nobel-winning poet Paz discusses three concepts that commonly get mixed-up in the public consciousness: sex, eroticism, and love. Sometimes I think of these updates as a way of being held accountable to my own readerly ambitions...so that if I announce to all these people that I'm reading a big ol' book, I might actually finish it. It's like quitting smoking or kicking meth. Anyway. The first five pages of this book were, like, super hot. When I finished them, I vacuumed my floor and updated my goodreads shelves. And now! Back to it!

It guide me through the history of "our share of paradise", as Paz liked to call love. Sex, eroticism, and love all together: sex the original fire, raises the red flame of eroticism giving place and feeding the tremulous and blue flame of love...

everyone wanting a deeper historical view and more viewpoints on the subject of love, eroticism, and the difference between those two very fluid ideas, read!!!

Also, read Octavio Paz's poetry. Now!
