Look up in the sky! It's a BOLD new graphic novel about SUPERHERO PETS!

When I was a kid I got to read comics that I had no business putting my grubby little hands on. You see my grandmother had carefully left all my dad’s old Superman, Superboy, Metal Men, X-Men, etc. comics intact so that when we went to visit I’d root through them and read ‘em until there was little left but a pile of yellowed pulp. The result of this research during my early childhood is that I’m one of the rare grown women you might meet with a working knowledge of late 50s/early 60s comic book ...more

Superheroes, pets, friends loyal to the end, and illustrations with enough POW to knock your socks off - it's a winning combination for the new graphic novel Sidekicks, by Dan Santat. I predict that young kids are going to beg their parents to read this aloud to them, and older ones are going to read it again and again, relishing in the action, the exciting story, and the multi-layered details. If you have a child who loves superheroes or comic books, definitely check this out.

Captain Amazing is getting on in years, but still fighting crime. When he is felled by exposure to a peanut, he uses his time off to look for a side kick to help him out. His pets think that they can help-- Roscoe has been trained as Metal Mutt, Fluffy the hamster has a cool outfit, and Static Cat, who ran away from home after an altercation with Roscoe, has been out on his own as The Claw. Captain Amazing also brings home a chameleon, Shifty, and the pets all attempt to fight crime and prove th ...more

There is a hero who works to save the day. No, he is not Superman. He is Captain Amazing. However, he works so hard saving the day that he isn't at home with his pets all that often. Also take into account his peanut allergy and the incident with a nut cart and he is home-bound for a little while. The incident with the peanuts causes Captain Amazing to wonder if he should hold tryouts for a new sidekick. All of his pets decide they would like to give the hero business a try. Of course there is a ...more

Captain Amazing (aka Harry) is taking some time off to recover from a peanut allergy induced illness. He's getting older, and realizes it is time to look for a new sidekick - and 3 of his pets want to audition for the job! But first, they need some training. Little do they know that their beloved master is in danger. The action focuses on the pets (dog, hamster, chameleon, and cat), but I loved Harry. Even though he has super powers, he's just a regular guy who gets wrapped up with work and miss ...more

Kids will eat this graphic novel up! Such vivid colors and characters. :-)

Roscoe the dog and Fluffy the hamster can only watch as their owner Harry, better known as Captain Amazing, fights the bad guys on the evening news. But Captain Amazing isn't as young as he used to be, and he's decided to search for a sidekick. Roscoe is psyched to interview for the job as Metal Mutt - but Fluffy the hamster, new pet chameleon Shifty, and Captain Amazing's former cat Manny (aka Static Cat) don't want to be left behind. The four pets need to decide what matters most and whether t ...more

Graphic Novel

This is a fun and action packed graphic novel about superhero pets. In this book Captain Amazing is getting old which makes it harder for him to stay out all night catching crooks and fighting arch villains. Captain Amazing and his pets agree that he needs a sidekick! The interesting part is the fact that each animal thinks they should be the sidekick. Students will enjoy watching the stor

This was really cute! It's about a superhero who is so busy fighting crime that he doesn't have time for his pets. They all go in disguise and apply to be his sidekick so they can spend more time with him. Love it!!! I hope there's going to be a sequel.

Reminiscent of classic superhero comics, this graphic novel, by the creator of The Replacements, tells the story of Amazing Man's pets who decide to audition to be his sidekick. This will be a big hit with kids and adults alike.

So I am divided here. Part of me want to review this as 'meh' and the other part really likes what I saw. The art style is flat and that is okay, because some of the angles and viewpoints express the story excellently. So the story itself...is also a double edge sword. I like the twist with the old super hero and the idea of training to be one, but the plot lacks and it is hard to feel any emotion for the characters. There are scenes that should lend to the feeling of emotional tugs, but they di ...more

I loved this book because it was a heart warming story and it was about that family looks out for each other.

I liked this book. I thought it was funny and I loved the drawings. The detail was amazing.

My nephew picked this up for a book report for 5th grade. Honestly, I thought it way too elementary for 5th grade, but seeing as I'm not a teacher, my opinion really doesn't matter. The story was cute, but there were times when I was confused by the story and the images weren't explaining it to me. Eventually it came together, but for a book that is easy to read and has illustrations to accompany the story, I don't think I should have been lost. But with that said, it was fun and cute and would ...more

This is a comic style type book. The pictures all throughout the book are descriptive. The big is the right size and the title is slanted with blue coloring. At the end of the book there's a description of the author.

This book is based around a character named Captain Amazing. He's the hero of this placed called Metro City. He's out so much that he doesn't have time for his pets at home. His pets start to develop super powers. Captain Amazing needs a sidekick so his pets all want the job. They e

My 9 year old son checked this one out for me to read. I loved it! The super heroes are household pets who just love to be around their master who happens to be Captain Amazing! Fluffy rules using his brain and the love between the animal friends is just a great addition to this story. And Manny the cat is so vulnerable and tough at the same time. The artwork captured so much for me and stole my heart at the end scene with Harry and his buddies. Friendship and love will always conquer evil. I lo ...more

Captain Amazing is getting older, so he's decided to hold auditions for a new sidekick. His pets are keen on filling the job, even if they don't all have super powers. Fluffy, the hamster, and Shifty, the chameleon decide to go out and try to build skills on the streets. Thankfully, Captain Amazing's retired sidekick Static Cat (aka runaway pet Manny) shows up and saves them from getting themselves killed. Against his better judgment, Manny trains them in basic crime fighting skills. Captain Ama ...more

This was an Amazing graphic novel for young readers, pun intended. Captain Amazing and his animal superhero buddies work hard to save their metro city from villains. The captain is looking for a sidekick, and his age is taking over. When a rookie villain returns to town, the dog, hamster, and chameleon are forced to save the day because Captain Amazing cannot do it on his own. Dan Santat has created a wonderful visual read for young readers, especially young boys. There aren't any female charact ...more

Who says that superheroes aren’t allowed to have pets? I’m pretty sure Superman had a dog at some point and you can’t tell me that Batman doesn’t have some batty little pals that he feeds before he rushes out to a night of crime fighting in his Batmobile. And, hello? Underdog is the ultimate canine superhero.

Meet Roscoe, Manny, Fluffy and Shifty. Captain Amazing, hero of Metro City, is horrible about looking after his pets. He’s so busy saving the world that he doesn’t even notice how his superp

Thank you Dan Santat for Sidekicks. It was such a fun read, a graphic novel with strong comic book leanings. Sidekicks has great comic book features including sounds in all caps - CRUNCH! CRASH! POW! Even better, we have evil villains with maniacal laughs –HAHAHAHAHA!

I loved the amazing illustrations and all the comic aspects of this book, but the story is equally compelling. Naturally, there is the requisite conflict between good and evil, but there is also conflict within Captain Amazing’s ow

As posted on Outside of a Dog:

Finally, I get to a “traditional” graphic novel, i.e., a superhero story. It may be traditional, but there’s nothing conventional about Dan Santat’s Sidekicks, the story of a superhero and his super sidekicks, even the ones he doesn’t know about. Sidekicks tells the tale of Captain Amazing, who’s getting a little long in the tooth. He decides it’s time for a new sidekick, and his pets Roscoe (a dog), Fluffy (a hamster) and Shifty (a chameleon) are up for the challen

This a relatively mundane graphic novel for older children about the super-powered pets of an aging superhero. It's a cute concept with engaging characters - sort of like The Incredibles for animal-lovers or Watchmen for pre-teens. For me, though, the story seems to kind of go nowhere much; I think the author bites off a little more than he can chew all at once, introducing the superhero (Captain Amazing) who is master to the "sidekicks", and introducing his two pets, then immediately introducin ...more

When Captain Amazing gets injured while battling supervillains he takes a forced vacation to recover and announces that he'll be holding auditions for a new sidekick soon. Everyone is excited by this announcement, even Captain Amazing's pets. Years ago Static Cat was his sidekick, so they're hoping that he'll take on one of his pets again. Metal Mutt thinks his special abilities will put him at the head of the pack, and even the new pet chameleon's camouflage abilities could come in handy, but f ...more

This is a cool story in graphic novel format about friendship among pets and their human companion, who happens to be a superhero named Captain Amazing. But life has a way of taking a toll on all of us, and Captain Amazing (Harry, to his friends)is getting older, slowing down, and in need of a helpful sidekick to bear some of the superhero responsibilities. His ambitious pets decide to audition for the spot despite his reluctance to endanger their lives. Thus, a dog, a hamster, a chameleon, and ...more

Am I allowed to call a comic most boys should dig adorable? Because Dan Santat’s Sidekicks is. With the high color, fun actions sequences, accessible artwork, and snickering humor, this Juvenile long comic does everything right. I mean, it even has its heartwarming moments. The nostalgia for our long-lived comic book heroes slips into tights familiar to current Saturday morning fare*, and it works.

The story is familiar to anyone who has had to share the attention of an adult and had to deal with
