I picked this book off of the library shelf randomly. I was bored and I thought I'd heard of the author before. I was surprised to find that, although it covers ancient Egyptian history, it very much mirrors the current politics of Egypt. It is about a pharaoh, Merenra II, who makes some poor decisions politically, which results in a popular uprising. The translator's introduction addresses Egypt's history of popular unrest and political revolt.

I'm sure this book must be better in its original Arabic. I certainly hope so as some of the word usages in the English translation are a bit odd ("...she charged into the garden like a slaughtered chicken", "The young man was swamped with desolation as he fixed his bulging eyes on Rhadopis's face, which was now shrouded in eternal stillness.") I also doubt that it was this book that prompted Mahfouz' Nobel prize for literature. Some years ago I read his book "Palace

I had a lot of trouble getting into it, but it got more arresting towards the end. It was sort of an inevitable tragedy. I really disliked how she treated Benamun.

What I like about this book is the magic atmosphere of pharaonic era that used to be boring to me in history books but is extremely fascinating in Naguib's choice of details.
Sincerely I didn't find the novel innovative yet it's simplicity captured me all through the book . I read the arabic original version and I can comment the style as sophisticated but easy to comprehend as suits the royal court scenary.

I really enjoyed this book but then sort of got tired of it at the end and began skimming. I loved the window into Egypt of the Pharaohs, and the way the novel read -- like an opera, really: stylized, dramatic, archetypes. Or maybe like a Greek tragedy. And I can only imagine the parallels Mahfouz was making with modern-day Egypt. Makes me wish I knew more relevant history.

Rhadopis of Nubia is beautiful, lots of poetic rambles, somewhat predictable. Wished the book was longer so the characters could have been fleshed out more. The way the words are strung together is what makes it such a pretty book to read.

mahfouz's ancient egypt novels are quite good. i particularly enjoyed this one because it focused more on the love story rather than the political unrest that permeates his work.

The collapse of a political system should always be heralded by the gods and by birds, that is just my opinion.
