I LOVE THIS STORY! I love how this is a story about an established couple. Zach and Austin have been together for six months when they start this road-trip. So there are no quickie dates and falling in love in less than 12 hours. Instead, we learn what issues are Zach and Austin facing: Austin has been pressing Zach to move in together but Zach is not ready for that kind of commitment. We learn Zach's reason, that he has been burned before, having a string of bad relationship. Austin is brash and has a temper and Zach worries that living in close quarter for 24/7 will break their relationship. Though deep inside, Zach knows that Austin will never hurt him but he worries that Austin's temper might turn violent.

The other thing that I love is of course, the road-trip itself. I LOVE ROAD-TRIPS. There is nothing better to test your relationship rather than spending long time with your partner in a car, in a bus, or in a plane for days. Because you cannot get away when things get hard. This story is ABOUT road-trip and how Zach and Austin deal with their problems along the way.

It's just so wonderfully romantic without getting overboard -- and I have tears in my eyes near the end when both men declare their love to one another. Definitely my favorite of all Astrid Amara's stories that I have read (she IS one of my favorite authors). (less)

In this one, Zach and Austin are quite a recent couple, just six months into their relationship and they are still on the boyfriends stage; true, Austin would like to move on the next level, but Zach is reluctant, he is scare that Austin will turn like his past boyfriends, from knight in shining armour to bastard. To give credit to Austin he has never behaved in a wrong way until now, and so, maybe to test him in a 24/7 situation, Zach decides to invite him over during a 3 days road trip that will end in Zach’s parents home right in time to celebrate the Hanukah.

Austin is not really happy of the arrangement, the car is fated to fail them and the weather is not good, but he loves Zach, and Zach is able to make sad puppy eyes when someone deny him something, and so here they are, in a cramped little car in the middle of a snow storm.

Confirming Zach unconscious theory, the forced closeness brings out their worst sides, but it also allows them to understand that love is the most important thing, and that their love is stronger than shadowy memories from their past.

Truth be told, Zach is the one who thinks the most and will mend most of his scars; Austin let it out here and there that his past was not happy either, and that on the opposite of Zach, he has not an idyllic relationship with his parents, but nothing more is said, and while Austin’s secret desire, to build a family with Zach will be granted, he will still have the unresolved issue with his previous family.

Of course, between open heart discussions, heated quarrels and sweet skirmishes, there will be also hot, very hot sex, with just that touch of kinkiness in the end to make the season naughty. Zach and Austin enjoy their sex, and even when they are a little angry with each other, the desire they have for the other will never lessen, so that it is always clear to the reader that they will be able to find an agreement, since a good relationship like their cannot be destroyed by something futile like silence or too much love.

I’m still catching up on all the holiday stories in my queue and this fun, adorable story jumps out. The writing is very good and the emotion is clearly translated through the men, their relationship, the struggles, and the quiet moments. There is hot sex and a lot of it but it also feels like the story is tempered and doesn’t need to include every single scene. I liked that balance and it helps create a more interesting dynamic within the relationship. The story is a road trip between established lovers, something that anyone who’s been on knows can make or break a relationship. This time Zach is driving his grandmother’s Geo Spectrum from Seattle to Boulder, Colorado and invites his mechanic boyfriend Austin for the ride and to meet Zach’s family. Of course the road trip is anything but smooth and easy as they navigate weather, theft, seedy motels, violent criminals, drunk hicks, and a Bronco’s loving grandmother.

Although the story sounds over the top and madcap, the events are deft and subtly used so they unfold naturally and with only a hint of obvious manipulation. The violent criminal is the biggest stretch but presented in such a way the reader can identify and forgive the action, buying into its appearance and the resulting emotion. Each of the events presented feels genuine and interesting, nothing overly superfluous or ridiculous. Instead this offers various trials for the couple to either overcome or falter. The men’s reactions and the resulting affect on their relationship makes for a nice change of pace from the usual new lovers who fall in love theme.

Both Zach and Austin are interesting men in their own right but have great tangible chemistry together. I liked that they were six months into their relationship and contemplating that next step. They’re in love yet not at the same point – Austin wants to move in together while Zach is still wary from past experiences. I appreciate the deviation from the traditional fictional path and that these two have some issues to work out before their happy ending. They’re in love and want to be together, the small moments that each realize they are in this for the rest of their lives are very poignant and sweet. I also like that despite that feeling, Zach isn’t quite ready to move in and would like some more time. This feels natural and honest, rather than love curing everything.

The sex scenes are nicely incorporated to mean something each time yet also don’t feel gratuitous. In fact there are a few fade to black scenes that I appreciated, showing some restraint in the erotica content. This also makes those scenes that are depicted mean more and have multiple nuances. Zach and Austin are not quite opposites but they clearly compliment each other and work well together even in ways they’re unaware. I really like these two together and the give and take of their dynamic. It’s not always easy and they struggle, argue, and make mistakes but their connection feels genuine and strong as if despite their problems or even because of them they’ll emerge better than ever.

For such a quick novella the solid writing, great characters, good tension, and series of events all lead to an engaging and entertaining story. I didn’t want to put this down and this is a couple I’d love to see more of, though I doubt that will happen. The small touches and quiet details sing far louder than the crazy actions and that more than anything makes this is a really touching and fun story to read.

I love road movies and books and so when I saw this one at Loose Id, I knew it was going to be winner, especially when coupled with Astrid Amara’s excellent sense of pace and timing. Like all good road books, the story begins on a note of hope. Zach is taking Austin to meet his parents and to celebrate Hanukkah together as a family. Then as the story progresses, more and more things go wrong for the pair and the story focuses on how the men react to each situation and to each other during that time. In the deft hands of this author it was all done very well with a good mix of humour, drama and scares which kept my attention throughout the book and I found it very difficult to put down.

Another thing I really liked about this novella was that it begins at the point when many books stop. Zach and Austin are six months into their relationship and all the meeting, getting to know and, in the case of Austin at least, the ‘I love yous’ have been said. The men are still in the lust-ridden stage of wanting to jump each other’s bones all the time, but that is tempered by a knowledge of each other’s bodies. It’s more than lust though, as Zach muses towards the beginning of the novel:

It was a relationship worthy of gentle coaxing, something built with care and consideration.

They’ve also reached a point of needing to move forward in the relationship, as is shown by Austin pushing for him and Zach to move in together. This is a big step for Zach who has had some bad relationships in the past, and during the book we are shown Zach’s fears about Austin when compared to his previous lovers. I thought that the author had done a good job of balancing both Zach and Austin’s thoughts and feelings so that I was sympathetic to both points of view. I quickly became invested in both characters and wanted the best for both. I particularly liked that the problems were resolved through the men opening up and talking to each other, rather than either character changing their personality. There’s an acceptance of each other as they are which I found very romantic, leading to a very satisfying conclusion to the story.

One final thing to say about this story is how much I enjoyed the writing. It was novella writing at its best with every word used for a purpose. Every emotion, description and action was deliberately placed to give emphasis to the story, move the plot forward or add to character. There were several times during reading when I just had to stop and re-read paragraphs because I was so impressed with the way the words had been used or how something had been described so succinctly. Take the following passage:

Zach approached the garage with an eager expression. Austin felt crushed. He hated breaking bad news to anyone, but for some reason it was worse with Zach because of his natural optimism. He loved that about Zach, loved the way he could take a positive message from even the saddest movie, but it always fell on Austin to crush the dreams of the hopeful when it came to cars.

It says so much about how Austin feels about Zach, but it also shows that Austin still has a lot to learn about Zach because through Zach’s earlier viewpoint we have learned how much Zach hides his insecurity and anger from Austin and puts on this optimistic face. Later we learn why this is, but this quote shows a moment of poignancy for both Austin and the reader. Marvellous.

I could go on much longer about all the wonderful things about this novella. For example, the fact that most of the book is about these men and their relationship with few secondary characters to distract us from that relationship, leading to an intensity which suits the short format; or how the themes of commitment, family and trust are cleverly interwoven through the story. All that remains for me to say is that if you’re looking for a well written, character based romance then I urge you to read this book. I think it will be one that I read again and again.(less)

Another well written interesting story from Astrid Amara.

First and foremost we have the wonderful romance between Zach and Austin. My heart belonged to Austin I must admit. Although there is a wonderfully emotional scene near the end from Zach that had me tearing up but in a good way lol.

There is a touch of suspense that again adds to the story without taking it over. In my opinion its handled perfectly, being both detailed enough without dragging things out.

This Chanukah fic starts with an established couple: Zach and Austin. They're an engaging pair with realistic problems to overcome. Zach is crazy optimistic most of the time, but the thought of moving in with Austin terrifies him. I really enjoyed the premise of this story – two guys (boyfriends) on a road trip to meet up with one of their families for the holiday. In this case, Zach is trying to be the hero and deliver his grandmother’s very old car to her. This story packed a lot in for such a relatively short novella, and wins points for being a road trip in a granny car with crocheted seat covers! Austin and Zach were both interesting individuals with great chemistry and there was enough conflict and excitement in the plot to keep me turning the pages quickly. This was my first read of Astrid Amara's work, but I'll definitely read more from her in the future. Recommended to anyone who enjoys sweet and sexy contemporary m/m romances.

This was really adorable and fun! It's a very easy read - I had an EXTREMELY quiet shift day at work, so pulled my Kindle out of my handbag and managed to read the whole story by the end of my shift. I wasn't being lazy, I swear. But when you work mid-week shifts at a museum and have zero people walking through the door, you'd bring your Kindle to work too ;)

LOVE this story! Zach and Austin were on a road trip, in Zach's Bubbie's old car, on their way to Zach's parents house to celebrate Hanukkah. An entertaining holiday-road-trip story with very well played opposites attract theme. The dialogue was believable, the characters three dimensional and easy to understand and like, the sex smoking and the romance still in its vulnerable stages.
