While Kuhlken's first entry in the Hickey family series left me rather cold, this second book completely makes up for it. With THE VENUS DEAL, Kuhlken hits upon the precise formula that makes these Hickey books so much fun. The story feels a bit scattered, but the writing is simply fantastic.

Although you might think you know what the "Venus Deal" is halfway through when the phrase first comes along, the last couple of chapters make it more complicated (and honest) than that.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

This is the first Ken Kuhlken book I’ve read. The plot was a bit scattered, but the main character was made interesting by the fact he had a family. The book is written well and I especially like the descriptions of California in the 1940s. Over all I liked the book, enough that I am going to read the first one in the series, The Loud Adios.
