Wonderful story with a good moral for children about how all that glitters is not gold. I enjoy this much myself.

What i admired the most is the reward the nightingale always cherished, the tears of the emperor; "“I have drawn tears from your eyes, when I sang the first time— I shall never forget that. Those are the jewels that rejoice a singer’s heart." The bird was only looking for self satisfaction and happiness, not gold and jewels, and this could be a life lesson; we should do good from our heart and for our heart, invest in our spirt and soul more than in our bank accounts, for that is the true happine ...more

Overall I think that the best part of this book are the illustrations. They are beautiful and worth spending some time looking at, but I did not find the story very interesting. I do think that there is some value to this piece of literature, but I do not think I would read this to a class. If a student wished to pursue the title on their own I would encourage them to do so, but this is not an appropriate book to read aloud. I think that the concepts presented are very true to the actual culture ...more

I've always loved this one, so I treated myself to this edition with its pretty pictures and fairly faithful translation. I think Yeats must have read this before he wrote "Sailing to Byzantium." Andersen had gained a reputation in his own lifetime. I mentioned this idea to my Modern Poets teacher who was not familiar with this fairytale. But look at these lines from Yeats:

...such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enameling
To keep a drowsy Emperor awake;
Or set upon a gol

It is a well known folktale and the fact that it comes from another culture is great. I like that teachers can talk about the possible connection with enslavement of the nightingale. I would like to philosophically explore any parallels between this story and To Kill a Mockingbird. Why is it important to use birds in these stories? Maybe incorporate Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

OMG, I can’t believe these books are on goodreads.
The Green Library /“المكتبة الخضراء” is my childhood memories, my mother use to read me these books when I was Little before bed, and as I grew older I reread them again by myself as an activity in summer vacation.
These books are the first books that I have read and because of them that I started to love reading and they were definitely the beginning of my road into becoming the “bookworm” that I am.

Charming Classic Story

This tale is a classic of a truly positive nature that can be read in several minutes. Though brief it tells a lovely story that rings true even more today than ever. It is recommended for youngsters and the mature reader.

Despite being neglected by the emperor for a jewel-studded bird, the little nightingale revives the dying ruler with its beautiful song.

It was okay, but I prefer Oscar Wilde's Nightingale tale.

Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen; April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories—called eventyr, or "fairy-tales"—express themes that transcend age and nationalit ...more
