Every time I think that depression has come out of the closet and been recognized as a common illness instead of a shameful secret, I'm proven wrong. A few weeks ago I preached a sermon in which I quoted another minister talking about his experience of depression, and people came out of the woodwork to tell me their stories. One of them, gentle and sweet and soft-spoken, recommended this book, and then brought it in for me to borrow. It took me three days to get to it, but it's fantastic.

A fantastic picture-book-like story for adults about depression. It is a sensitive and frank exploration of what depression feels like and how it can be treated. I have never seen a better book on the topic that is so accessible to almost all age groups. The illustrations of an actual black dog bring home exactly how serious depression can be.

This is really useful and simple book. It gives some good advice as well as explaining depression to those who have not had it and maybe don't understand it. A great help for those who know someone with depression and for the person themselves. I would recommend for everyone and have indeed recommended to some people that I know.

Such a brilliantly clever way to illustrate the influence of that mangy black dog, Depression.

initially this made me laugh, with i assure you a purely gallows cackle of sympathy, but that was the hight of enjoyment that i got from this book, it over simplifies a horribly complex condition, boiling everything down to the most typical and not even mentioning that there is such a thing as the atypical, and ironically it uses a combination of pictures and words which lends itself to complexity, it is in short patronising garbage, however the art is quite imaginative in its depiction of the r More...

I'm rather ill informed of depression and what to expect of it so picked this book up to help me briefly educate myself before looking more into it.

This book is more designed to bring your own personal situation back into perspective because when you're caring for someone who is not well with depression, even a mild form, you can start slipping that way yourself if you're not careful.

Definitely not worth reading as a stand alone information book. Do look at other material on this subject if yo More...

Fantastic support for anyone who needs help with dealing with someone who is suffering from this illness. Only book you should pick up before this one is perhaps the first in this 2 part series.
