Nate the Great is an extensive series of easy-reader mysteries. Nate, a young sleuth with a penchant for pancakes, is finishing breakfast when he receives a telephone call from a friend who has lost a picture. He walks to her house (considerately leaving a note for his mother) and uses observation and deductive reasoning to determine what happened to the picture.

Within the confines of a limited early-reader vocabulary, the writing in this series is above average. Each story unfolds More...

Boy detectives are plentiful in children's fiction. There is Encyclopedia Brown, the Hardy Boys, and Nate the Great. Whether the danger is real or imagined, these characters are serious about solving their cases and bringing villains to justice.

This book is the first in a series of Nate the Great books that include over 15 titles. This is a good series to get boys involved in reading and could lead into reading Encyclopedia Brown books and then the Hardy Boys.

I think we have read every Nate the Great book in the series, and there are A LOT. Nate is a great detective who always leaves a note for his mother to inform her of his whereabouts and loves to eat pancakes. There are great characters in the books, especially Rosamond, Nate's very strange cat-loving friend (she's totally goth). These books are perfect for mystery lovers aged 5-9, I would think. If you want to also read some mysteries for the same age group, but with a female protagonist, tr More...

There are tons of wonderful easy-readers out there: Frog and Toad Are Friends and Mr. Putter & Tabby Feed the Fish are both outstanding examples of books in series that are high-interest and high-larious, unlike this book and series, which is mediocre at best. But hey, the kid really likes pancakes. And that's funny, right? Right? More...

Nate the Great books aren't that great. I hated them when I was a kid, yet I would always read them. The endings of the books were always the same, they figured out what or who did it. And where are Nate's parents? They just let their son walk around everywhere and question people. That is very irresponsible of them. Nate the Great books always made me fall asleep and always wasted my time. I would not recommend this book to anyone, especially little kids. If kids want real mystery, they should r More...

This series was one of my favorites as a child. I can still visualize its spot in my elementary school library... on the left side of the back wall, in the last tall shelf next to the short shelves, on the second shelf from the bottom. So when I spotted three Nate the Great books at a library book sale yesterday, I had to buy them. I was not disappointed. They're funny and clever in a different way now than they were 16 years ago, and I'm sure I'll give them to my kids someday as well!

Nate the Great is a terrific first mystery series. Readers quickly love Nate and his dog Sludge as they embark on adventurous detective work in their neighborhood. Every reader will want to eat pancakes and leave his mother a hand written note when he leaves home just like Nate. The entire series is engaging and full of top notch detective work! Enjoyable for the entire family.

I was not expecting this book to make me chuckle! This is an old, old book, so I was expecting it to be boring. But the fact you can clearly tell it's written like a black and white detective show made it very entertaining! And Nate says some great stuff! I always thoroughly enjoyed it because I found my narrating detective voice to be entertaining too :p

I will be able to read this to my kids before rest time, which is what I checked it out for, but I will also be reading the rest of t More...

i thought that it was a good book because it was about how annie's little brother had took her painting of her dog and made it into a three headed monster and everything she painted was yellow and everything her brother painted was red and the painting was orange and if you mix red with yellow you will get orange soallhe did was paint over it.

Pancake loving Nate receives a call from his friend Annie whose piece of artwork is missing. While investigating, Nate takes a side case when Annie's cat-obsessed friend Rosemund's cat goes missing. Nate is successful in cracking the case and gets to eat a ton of pancakes.

Some dry humor that endeared the book to me.

Kid's book review:

Easy to read and good for early readers who prefer short stories. I liked the rhyming and the appeal of Nate, but these books definitely have a window of enjoyment for kids learning to read for fun, and if you miss the window - they won't hold much your child's interest for long.

These were my favorite kids’ series. I loved them so much I would read them all the time and have my mom buy me about everyone that there was. I don’t remember what this one was about exactly I have just been going through Goodreads trying to add all my books that I read when I was little.

My 7-year old loved Nate the Great. About an hour after finishing the book, he says, "you know, it would be fun to be a detective". So, today I am hiding something then giving him clues to solve the mystery. Very fun, and great mix of text and illustrations for his early reading level.

I did love this book, and imagine it all being read in a young film noir style. It has that old school storyline and feel. I recommend Nate the Great a lot because it is like a chapter book but still pretty easy, they also have the appeal of being real stories, with mysteries.

I Love Nate the Great! What a fantastic voice! I just adore the hard-boiled detective voice on the kid who needs pancakes to solve mysteries. Cracks me up. Ethan and I are going to see a children's theater version tomorrow -- I'm psyched.

I instantly thought of my two year old son who insists that pancake is part of his name as I read the opening. Sharmat does a good job being interesting, but still keeping the reading level low. I will be reading this to my son soon. Thnx.

We read this book merely as an "easy-reader" for homeschool. What a delightful book! As my young daughter read aloud, the rest of us became distracted with amusement. Her stiltedness as a new reader gave the same effect as a "Dragnet" voice...a must for future reading of Nate stories. I am so impressed with the author's skill at using so few words to generate so much humor and mystery. It just hits the bullseye by captivating the kids and tickling the funny bone of the parent More...

Nate the Great is a mini super sleuth. Using clever clues he solves the day to day mysteries that vex his friends. Clever young readers can discover the answers right along with Nate and deservedly feel smart.

We have had this one for a while, but Kiddo just read it himself for the first time. It is the next step from Mr. Putter and Tabby. It is longer and has a few more challenging words. Good level 4.

I love the 70's style bell-bottom pants, and girls in short dresses and knee socks. My son loved the mystery and the short chapters. Also lots of talk of pancakes...food is always comfy.
