It's a cute (predictable)story of a boy and his homing pigeon and introduces the reader to Venice. The story was intended for pre-teens to early teens. I think that some of the vocabulary is well over that age group and the story line under that age group. Perhaps it should be a story read to 8-10 yr olds by an adult so that the meaning of some of the words could be explained...unless the child is the type to look up definitions!
