This is Derek Knight’s story and it is a roller coaster ride. I like Derek he is one of those men that is driven to be better than others. He is honorable, loyal, and longing to find a woman to love him for whom he is. I think that his mother did him a great disservice by always telling him that he would have to be better than anyone else and earn more money than others if he ever wanted to marry. I am sure that he could have found anyone if that was what he truly wanted and they could have live ...more

3.5 'Regency' Stars

The second installment of The Spice Trilogy was a rollercoaster of emotions!

Derek: Derek is exactly the kind of hero you expect in a Regency novel. He is kind, loyal, compassionate got a sense of humour and is of course extremely handsome! But underneath all that, he hides a very sensitive part of himself. Since a young age he was told that being 'only' the second son, he would need to work to get some earning. No one would want to marry him if he wasn't better than others and

This book started out OK, nothing spectacular but I found it entertaining enough. However, about half way through it started to drag, and drag.... By the time it was over I was skipping and skimming pages and happy to be done with it.

For books of this genre they all tend to be the same, and it usually takes a little something extra to get above a three star rating.
This novel had `it` in spades. Perfectly written lead couple, flawed but with suitable and realistic development. Lily was shy and I thought too cowardly to like, but Derek bought out a fiestiness in her that you couldn't not admire.
Derek was so impressive, I mean, the man broke a bed! But he was so protective and so clearly devoted to Lily, so taken with her

More like 3.5 stars - definitely my least favorite of the entire Knight series, but still a good read.

Lily Balfour's grandfather, the only thing standing between her family and poverty has just passed away. Her only hope is to go to London and attract a rich suitor. Of course, this is complicated by the fact that she has "a past."
She does manage to attract the attention of a rich nabob but finds herself inconveniently attracted to Derek Knight. Derek is also very interested in Lily but his life is complicated by the fact that he is in London to get money the Indian army, army that the "Committe

This is not exactly one of her best works, but good all the same.

I gave it only 3 stars because of the way the story dragged. There were a lot of sub-stories, but I liked the way all loose ends were tied.

Derek was sent to London to request for army funds and just when he thought he could have it in a trice, he had another thing coming. Lily Balfour was looking for someone "rich and stupid" to save her and her family's depleted fortune, and Derek wasn't exactly the solution.

As with all her novels

3.5 stars if I could have...

I thought the story was great, the characters were definitely likable and I love love LOVE that they were in love before they got down and dirty. I don't like it when things go all the way between the hero and heroine and THEN they realize they love the other person, I want love before sex dang it and I'm glad I got to see it here finally.
I would have enjoyed this much more had there been less inner dialogue. It seemed like pages and pages went by without anyone speak

A decent read, but it really begins to drag after a while. It could probably be a good 60 pages shorter without losing much.

Lily and Derek fall in love relatively early, but spend a really long interval thinking about how they can never be together. Lily sticks to her maybe-fiance, Derek sticks to a couple random women. They smolder at each other from a distance. I got a bit tired of it. And then they finally decide they'll be together at the absolute, most inconvenient, To Stupid To Live momen

Dashing and sexy officer meets beautiful and secretive lady. They fall in love/lust at first kiss. Said officer finds out that beautiful lady is to be married to man he dislikes and which he is investigating for fraud. The lady has to marry the rich man to save ancestral home and family. But they cannot keep away from each other…Great formula!

I enjoyed every little morsel of it! Gaelen Foley has the ability to suck me right in and forget about what is happening around me. I lost track of time. I

Review written on my Blog (Post #95) in March 2011, after borrowing book from library.

It's really rather lovely to get back to a Gaelen Foley novel ... and this one was no different from all the others ..... full of very lovely romance and a bit of naughtiness thrown in.

Featuring one of the Knight Cousins, Major Derek and the reserved and ladylike Lily Balfour.

Infamous rake and hardened warrior Derek has come to England from his posting in India to chase up the money the government which has bee

I found this book to be enjoyable, but for me it did not quite live up to the rest of the books about the Knight family. I absolutely love Gaelen Foley's heroes, and I thought that Derek Knight was one of her best. The heroine, Lily Balfour, was sweet and likeable, but I didn't find her character to be as compelling as Derek's. Many books that I have read lately have seemed rushed at the end, but I did not find that to be at all the case with this book. For me the main drawback of this book was ...more

Another WOW from Gaelen Foley! This is not just a 'text book' romance, but the characters are so exotic & wonderous you just can't put this down. I re-read the last 3 chapters I loved it so much! Character development was outstanding & this will be a book on my 'read again & again' list. I never give a book a five star unless its one I truly, truly love. This gets a five-plus from me.

Lily is old blood, but has no money. What is a lady of noble blood to do? Get a rich, hopefully stupid man. And she does manage to get the attention of a nobody with lots of money. And it's not like she is using him, he is using her right back. She is Ton. He is nothing. She has no money. He has money.

But that is not the way of a romance. Of course there needs to be drama.

The drama is named Derek. He is a good guy. Soldier through and through. Nowhere as rich as the guy she has on her hook. He i

Rated this book with 2 star, agak2 aneh alur ceritanya dan endingnya ga maksimal banget:( padahal sdh seru di depannya.

Wow! I really enjoyed this one! This is the second in a series, I really hope to read the first and third books now. I loved the slow build up to the love scene, it made the sparks all the more real and the characters all the more likeable. The world created, with India and all, made the book a little different from the other historical/regency romances I've been reading lately. The whole mystery was well played out as well, and had unexpected consequences. So I recommend this one, and I really ...more

I love this Pride and Prejudice/Cinderella style regency romance. It was a lot better than Georgiana's story, but the author has a habit of skating around a character's shady past with intermittent mysterious phrases and instead of making me curious it's just god awfully annoying. Just tell us how the damn woman shamed her family already! I don't want to read constant allusions to some shameful secret while staying in the dark about a character's motivations for their actions. Don't hide things ...more

Cute if not particularly memorable (something I find true of most Foley books). Our heroine Lily must marry into money to shore up her family's fortune. It's unfortunate, then, that she is attracted to Derek Knight, a younger son military officer recently on leave from India, who is still processing a life in which he doesn't have to constantly fight. There are evil secondaries, an embezzlement plot, and sexy makeouts. Derek and Lily are both rather lovely people but I was never drawn into this ...more

I think she is a gifted writer. Both Lily and Derek are wonderful characters, and despite the cliches, perhaps because of them and their witty usage, this is a fun read. Some of the cliches were so bad indeed that I was moved to sigh and go, 'really?' out loud. But I did enjoy the romp and think this was a super and entertaining read. I did feel a bit sad for poor Lundy, [no pun intended] because the working and lower classes do seem to come off rather badly. But I did enjoy the plot.

It was impossible to get into this book. Like the first one in the series it never reached out and grabbed me. I wasn't hooked in and I didn't care what happened to the characters. I don't know why, it was a really good storyline. I'm hoping that maybe I'm just tired of historicals, but who knows. I'm going to put off reading the 3rd one for a while and hopefully get interested in it later. The writing is wonderful and it paints such a vivid picture, so I don't know what my problem is.

I thought this was the first novel in the trilogy. I didn't find out that it was the second one until I read the bonus material in the back... so I guess it doesn't matter too much what order you read them in. An interesting take on Regency London, I felt that there were a lot of modern sensibilities and attitudes mixed in here, but I'm no expert so I'm not totally sure. There were more descriptive and explicit sex scenes than in other Regency novels I've read.

Very sedate read - & that's the problem. This book lacks the essential "zest" and spark between the characters that I have begun to associate with Gaelen Foley's writing. All the books of the Knight Miscellany series was so much better than this offering, and the first book of the Spice Trilogy was interesting as well. I wouldn't classify this as a bad read, I was just let down by this book in comparison to other books written by the author.

Lily Balfour and Derek Knight. Lily is looking to make a rich marriage for her family's sake but Derek Knight is no rich man. He is a a highborn soldier from India and thinks his entire life will be in military in India. When he comes to London to receive the money the military needs he has all the women wanting him and he meets Lily who is betrothed to the man he thinks is responsible for embezzling the money he is supposed to get. 4

From what I read the writing wasn't terrible (not really to my liking but not horrible) I just wasn't interested in the story. Nor was I really intrigued by Mr. Hero and his "sculpted lips" and his "mastery of the Eastern arts of pleasure." What arts be these? Does he weave a saree while, um, pleasuring? I think that would be an art...it also sounds like it could be someone's 'secret fantasy.' "Weave that saree good, baby!!!"
