I found this to be a well written and enjoyable tale. Although it is billed as a YA theme, the story is a lot of fun and can be enjoyed by anyone who likes the fantasy/paranormal style romance books. The characters are interesting and the story tells you enough to want to know more about them, especially as to what the future will bring. The author does a nice job in how the supernatural beings relate to each other as well as the world of mortals. While it is set around a romance theme, there is...more

Woe is me, I really wanted to enjoy this book. The plot had some major potential, and I'm disappointed that it didn't end up in my 'holy gods I love it' pile.

The writing was wooden. The emotion was phoned in, and because the story wasn't explained to us until about 20% in, completely out of left field at moments. Here's a 20 year old woman posing as a 17 year old senior living with her "Aunt" and "Uncle", when in reality she's 90 years old, immortal, and has lived through the death of a fiancee...more

I picked up this book while browsing through the free section on Amazon. The premise seemed unique, and while in between other books I thought I'd give it a try. 'A Chance for Charity' is a sweet story about a young girl with a sad past. She's moved to a new town and somehow the town, the people, the fit just seems right. She meets a young man who she immediately falls in love with, and that is that. Oh, did I mention there are Immortals, Witches, Vampires, Shape-Shifters and crazed mortals out...more

Emily has lived the life of a quiet loner in the past, trying to go unnoticed. But with Telluride being such a small and welcoming town, she finds a group of friends at school almost immediately. An enjoyable YA paranormal romance. Yes, it definitely has some parallels to Twilight, i.e. older paranormal falls in love with high school student mortal. But, this book actually explored some of the dilemmas that Twilight just skipped over such as the difficulties of having to change one's identity and the vast age difference between the romantic couple.

For the most part, it is well written. I was able to completely immerse myself into the reality the book created. Except, (yip, there's an ex...more

A Chance for Charity was my favorite of nine free Kindle e-books I downloaded on November 20, 2011. I like the young adult paranormal genre. The author develops a host of paranormal characters, and 21st Century red-neck villains, who hunt down and kill anyone who displays unnatural talent of any kind. The main character, Charity, became an immortal relatively recently (1920's). In modern Telluride, Colorado, she attends high school for the fifth time as a 90-year old forever inhabiting a beautif...more

I picked this book out because it was free on Amazon. The writing is really sub-par, which is too bad because the story has potential. the dialogue is far too focused on exposition and not at all on realistic speech patterns. Some of the plot twists come out of nowhere and seemed more like the author was just writing what popped in her mind at any given moment rather than putting any effort into an outline or plan for the story.

The characters were so...one-dimensional! Everyone had the same voic...more

So, let’s get the hard stuff out of the way. What a great YA book for young teens. The storyline was so intricate and compelling, I almost forgot the rating!!! In doing reviews, I have read YA pieces and not many books have I loved. S.L. Baum, step right up and take a bow! Stephanie Meyers started the YA hysteria into the paranormal genre with Twilight. Ms Baum has written a wonderful first book for her Immortals with no sparkle but with lots of clout.

Charity, AKA Emily, is an Immortal relocati...more

I really enjoyed this first book in The Immortals series. I admit I've had my eye on it for a long time and I'm kind of annoyed at myself for waiting as long as I did. Baum crafts a completely enchanting world on two levels: both the mundane and the arcane. I have never been to Telluride. Baum's gift for describing setting is wonderful. I am a beach person, and after reading her book, I actually think I might want to brave the hated snow and visit what seems like a charming little town. She mana...more

A Chance for Charity was a beautifully crafted, well developed paranormal story. While the story falls under the young adult category, the characters themselves do not behave like naive teenagers – because they are nothing of the sort. Although Charity (who currently goes by Emily) appears to be a seventeen-year-old, in reality she is in her nineties. She, and her companions, Catherine and James, are “immortal ones”. They never age and can heal themselves, but they can be murdered.

Baum does a f...more

I really really loved this book. There is a variety of paranormal creatures in this book and they are all the good ones, the humans are the evil ones. They are jealous of the powers that they do not have, and so they want to rid the world of all immortal ones. Charity is tired of starting over, but with starting over she gets to stay in a town longer as long as the humans don't find them. She is also tire of being alone with no one to love. She has loved once in her life ans she lost him and doe...more

I loved all of the immortal ones. My favourite so far was A Chance for Charity! It was fab to meet all the characters, and what was really nice was they all had personalities and you could really get engrossed in them and there stories and they would still be around through all the books and not just disappear. Now to the story lines, well they were very good a great mix and though there were many characters the story lines never blurred or became confusing... I think the characters were all per...more

It took me a while to warm up to this book. Emily's/Charity's voice wasn't the most exciting voice to hear from. Let's go with Charity, Charity was dull and uninteresting for the most part until Link appeared. Maybe that was the intention of the author but it wasn't Charity that made this book interesting, Link brought a lot of relief to this book, he made Charity seem more interesting, he was charming, a little humorous, and supposedly a looker.

I wasn't sure how or when Link would show up in t...more

AUTHOR: S. L. Baum writes young adult, romance fiction. This author has written (4) books. I found the book to posses a lot of chit/chatter dialogue with very little action. Hug, kiss, hug, kiss, etc. What are we reading? Twilight? Hmmmmm

GENRE: Paranormal romance

SETTING: Modern day Colorado

CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTERS: She is immortal repeating high school (Twilight);
CENTRAL MALE CHARACTER: He is immediately drawn to her (Twilight). He has no relatives but loves her family.

SYNOPSIS: Emily (changed...more

I loved the book yet the fact that she didn't have an actual spine but liked to pretend she did, and again there was that other matter of... SPOILER AHEAD [falling for the (grand-)nephew of her dead boyfriend or the fact that the girl had been suicidal when her boyfriend died was kind of pathetic]. The story had a good premise and it kept me intrigued until the end, but there were moments I was rolling my eyes I mean how un-mature can you get. I mean the woman kept saying she was older then the...more

Like so many other books, this had been sitting on my Kindle (untouched) for a while. I keep getting other books and push other books to the side. I am such a bad Book Nerd!

Best Part of the Book: Link aka Lincoln Knight. He is truly the best part of this book. I think that because he is always putting Charity ahead of himself. This even included when he found out everything about Emily ... ugh Charity. I guess there are still some good guys out there (e...more

Okay so I liked this book for many reasons. It has a good story line, plot, strong Characters and it was well written.
Charity may be old but she is still young at heart and just like any other teen.she falls for Link who I think is Perfect for her and she has a wonderful "family"I really liked the background info each character get's to tell about themselves without it being overbored on the details. Also there are a few times when you get a bombshell dropped on you that I enjoyed and it kept me int...more

For me, there were two parts to this book: one, the romance between Emily and Link, and two, the world-building. The romance just didn’t do it for me. Like I’ve mentioned, Link just didn’t click for me and almost every step they take in their relationship feels too rushed.
The world-building, however, I did like. At first the Immortals felt like vampires without all the bad stuff, like vampires-light (which just seems like such an easy way out), but when halfway through the book other supernatur...more

Charity is used to having to move around every couple of years because of who she is. Now in the town of Telluride she is Emily. As you read on you will learn why Charity needs a change of town and identity so often (I won't spoil it). The difference about Telluride is Link, the handsome guy that scoops into Charity's life and is drawn to her. The harder Charity tries to be normal and not send out any "red flags" the harder it is to keep her secret from the guy that loves being around her. After...more

Really interesting and fun in the beginning. Unfortunately, it gets a little forced towards the end, maybe the author just wanted to be finished with it so just filled it in quickly. All in all, I really did enjoy it (which is hard to find sometimes in self-published). I will try the rest of the series at some point I think, as long as the stories are fully flushed out to the end and not as rushed. I did enjoy the town and the world creation with the introduction of a new immortal creature (one...more

A Chance for Charity has a good ole mixture of reviews - some good, some bad. Mine is on the good side. I really enjoyed it. So much so that I have just finished adding the next 3 books in the series onto my wishlist. This book is mainly a young adult paranormal but it has also had me laughing out loud at parts of it too. It is not too serious and is just an easy, fun read. There is a bit of mystery in there as Charity can't remember much about an accident that her parents had.

If you want to rea...more

I'll admit I don't read this type of genre--vampires, shape-shifters, etc. I will read books about witches or ghosts, but it's way outside my genre, sweet contemporary romantic comedies. The book was highly recommended so I ordered it. It was very well-written. I liked the fact that Charity had to be disguised as a high school student, but had another life in the 1940s. I loved Link and how he adjusted for the woman he obviously loved. Some of the dialogue was a little formal for someone pretend...more

Emily, along with her aunt and uncle, has just moved to Telluride, CO. She's the new girl in town, but it's not the first time. Her name is really Charity and her family is not like any Telluride has ever seen. But if all goes well, no one will ever know.

I've been wanting to read this for a while, but kept putting it off. I'm glad I did read it. While I didn't feel a terrific connection to Charity, I liked the book and found the story to be interesting. My only complaint is that it went from ne...more

When a friend online recommended her sister-in-law's self published book 9ish months ago, I was hesitant. I hadn't read many selfpub'd authors at that point. Well I later got a kindle and that opened me to a whole new world where self-published authors pretty much ruled amazon. I picked this one up for free last month and read it in one sitting.

I liked the different spin on the paranormal. I liked how the female was the immortal one and the male was just a mortal. I haven't picked up the 2nd bo...more

Okay, I've got to stop reading these $.99 specials on my kindle. I can't believe I read the whole thing! It wasn't terrible. It was clean. That being said, the romance was overly sweet and corny. The dialogue was stiff. The plot was barely there. The villains were unbelievable. Why would these men dedicate their lives to seeking and destroying "immortals" just because they could heal themselves? The book is like a trite and overused recipe for paranormal romance stirred in immortals, witches, a...more

*WARNING: Review may contain minor spoilers.*

A Chance for Charity by S.L. Baum has been on and off my Amazon Wish List more times than I can count. One moment I was positive that I wanted it than the next not so sure. Ultimately I decided that I would borrow now and buy later which means that this review is based off of the Kindle version of the novel lent to me by a member of a lending site.

I'll admit that I was concerned with the "skills" that the summary noted as in my experience authors eit...more

Being a senior at a new school isn't easy, especially if it's the sixth time you've capitulated to too long days of calculus, social studies and the endless barrage of mindless, teenage gossip.
Charity, AKA Emily Johnston doesn't seem to mind. It sort of comes with the territory of being immortal. Blending in and moving from one small town to the next is all part of the process of keeping her unusual longevity and that of her two closest friends/family a secret.
Hunted for centuries, Charity is fo...more

Emily may appear to be a spaz to her new classmates, since she can't seem to remember her name. But Emily has had a few different names, since she's been through high school a few times. She's really named Charity, and it took her entirely too long to reveal what she was. We find out how she takes her coffee and that she's bad at math before we even know what type of non-human she is. This was quite frustrating, since she's our narrator and we should know what she is from the very beginning. I g...more

A Chance For Charity is basically about Charity, who's an immortal. She lives with her made-up uncle and aunt who're also immortals. Several years ago, Charity was in love with a guy named Roger who died in a war. The death of her beau left Charity heart-broken, so much so, that she even tried to commit suicide but failed again and again since she was immortal and any injury automatically healed supernaturally fast.
That was when Charity got to know that she was...more
