I got this for my 6 year old niece last year because she was starting to get into "chapter books." I saw that the Junie B. series was well liked, and thought nothing of it. My niece also said she likes Junie B., and had read a few of them already.

Today I was watching my sister's children, and I saw this sitting on one of the end tables, so I read it while they were cleaning the playroom. (This could be accomplished in 15 minutes, but it took them 2 hours because they play as they go along. Fine...more

Summary:
Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake is about going to the carnival. If you win you get a prize. So Junie B. Jones wants to win everything to win a prize. Her friend Grace is winning everything so therefore Junie B. Jones isn't winning until she wins the cake walk. Despite her mother’s warnings she picks the nicely packaged box and inside is the Fruitcake. She isn't very happy with it until she realizes that she can sit on it and it doesn't hurt her behind. The few images enhanc...more

I love that the whole series is written like a child would actually talk, full of incorrect verb tenses and other language mistakes. The book is silly and so entertaining to read because it is not only the language that is childlike but the way of thinking all together. Junie B. Jones is hyperactive and loud and constantly doing things that make you laugh out loud. She has a school carnival in this book, where she wins a fruitcake. Although, the fruitcake is not Junie’s cup of tea, she loves the...more

I usually enjoy going back into my childhood and re-reading the old Junie B. Jones books, but I didn't find this one entertaining. It's okay but its story is off at times and the bossiness of Junie was at a high level in this book.
Carnival Day is coming up at school, where parents and teachers hold a carnival where kids play various games. Junie wants to win very badly and is pressured even more by her rich friend Lucille, who wins at pretty much everything. When the day comes, she loses at ever...more

As always, this is another book where Junie B. Jones seems a little clueless on the ways of the world. She just can't seem to win at anything. Once again, this is a situation I think most kids can identify with. It's hard when an adult lets you win all the time and then all of the sudden you're shocked with the hard reality that you're not as good as you thought. Junie B. definitely has an ego!

I've heard a lot of complaints about the language in these books, but they always just make my kids lau...more

"Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Friutcake" is a realistic fiction book for primary readers, written by Barbara Parker. Junie is a rambunctious kindergartner who manages to get herself into trouble without even intending to. Like many 5 year olds, Junie has a very hard time loosing. After a disappointing evening at the school Carnival Night, she finally wins a cake at the Cake Walk - an yucky, blucky friutcake.

I gave this book a 3-star rating because it was enjoyable to read. I especially li...more

Junie B. books are “real” chapter books, in that they look like “big kid” books, have smaller type and fewer pictures than easy readers and have longer sentences. There is generally only one half-page picture per chapter, which, while related to the text, doesn’t replace actual reading. The book keeps the short sentence structure of earlier books, but loses some of the controlled vocabulary and repetition.

These books might be a little scary to early readers - until they start reading. Junie...more

My niece is 6 and she loves these books. I find them amusing. But the grammar makes me crazy. I correct it when I'm reading to her. And I explain the words that are not real words.

This is one of the first Junie books (we have been reading them out of order). In this story Junie has decided that she wants to win at everything (she is used to winning cause she always wins with her grandfather).

Anyhow she finds out that the School Carnival is coming up. And there will be chances to win hundreds of...more

Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake is one of my personal childhood favorites. Elementary students will have an easy time relating to Junie B. and will find her character and antics hilarious and entertaining. Barbara Park does an excellent job creating a plot that most all children can enjoy and connect with.
The illustrations in this story, done by Denise Brunkus, are childish and simplistic in a wonderful way. Students are able to get a better understanding of Junie B.'s silly antic...more

This book was very funny. Junie B. goes to the carnival at her school. Junie is not very happy at first because she loses at a few carnival games. But, she does win a comb in the fising pole game which she's not very happy about. Then, her mom suggests that Junie go into her kindergarten room 9 and do the cake walk. This is fun for Junie because she wins a cake and her mom lets her pick out what kind of cake. Junie picks out a cake that she thinks is looks nice. But, when she gets home with her...more

I know a lot of people who like this series so I thought I'd try one out with Ellie. She liked it well enough but I had problems. I didn't like the baby talk language it was written in ("I ranned and ranned") and found myself correcting the language as I read it out loud to Ellie. I don't want her using incorrect English! A pet peeve of mine but I realize it was intended for fun in the book. However, the character is 5 - I don't know a lot of 5 year olds who still talk like that!
Also, stupid and...more

One of my favorite of the Junie B books! Some really hysterical parts...talking about carnival night at school, Junie B says "...After that, a crybaby boy named William stood up very shy. And he said one time he rode the scary roller coaster. And he didn't even cry that much. Except for he accidentally threw up his chili dog. Then Paulie Allen Puffer told about carnival food that he threw up too. Like a candy apple. And caramel popcorn. And a rubber band. Except for that is not food. That is off...more

Junie goes to her school carnival and starts losing at all the games and blames everyone for her failure. Then she wins a comb at the fishing and has to be spoken to about her behavior. Then she throws a wet sponge at Meanie Jim and runs away from her parents and refuses to come out and when they haul her out of the moon walk, she has to apologize to him. Then they cannot find her shoe and she becomes upset and her parents let her play one more game and she decides she has to have the fruitcake....more

—June B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, P. 19

I would give two and a half stars to this book.
Some of Junie B. Jones's funniest moments are captured in the pages of this fast-moving book. A look at the irrepressible kindergartner's visit to her school's carnival night, "Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" is a well told story from all angles, and most definitely a Barbara Park creation. It is a short read, but its content b...more

dear mom and dad,
junie B jones and the yucky blucky fruitcake
Barbra Park.

this book of Junie B Jones is about: Junie B practicing games for the up coming carnival. She practices putting a grapefruit and dropping the pins in the buket.

But at the carnival it was putting a golf ball and put the pins in the bottle. Junie B didn't win any prizes in any thing exept in the cake walk and she won a

yucky blucky fruitcake.

while reading this book I asked questions and made predictions. when I was reading t...more

Junie B. is frustrated because she can't seem to win. Her friends beat her at games, races and competitions. All she won at the carnival was a dumb plastic comb, while That Grace won all kinds of great prizes. Why couldn't Junie B. win, especially after she even practiced at home for the sponge-toss at the principal's face by throwing sponges into the toilet? But then there was the cake walk. And guess what? Junie B. won a cake! And since fruit is her favoritest thing ever, then fruitcake must b...more

Junie B. Jones is relatable to most children, because author Barbra Park uses words and phrases that any typical child would use. Park also has Junie B. display emotions of excitement to disappointment and a typical selfishness that most children demonstrate at that age. Her grandpa lets her win all the games so when she goes to school and is upset that her friends beat her at the games. There are black and white illustrations every few pages and allow the reader to see Junie B.’s excitement whe...more

Junie B. Jones, the kindergartner is on a mission to be the winner of everything. This book shows how Junie B. struggles to win everything she wants, and how in the end she doesn't win what she wants. This books involves multiple members of her family, and how they help her to understand that winning isn't everything!

This was a very easy read for me. As I was reading it, I was imagining what I could do with it in my class room. If my students were old enough, it would be something good to occupy...more

Everyone loves Junie B. Jones! Junie Beatrice Jones is a wacky fun six year old and you never know what you are going to expect with her. Junie B. Jones makes the reader's laugh and enjoy reading. Barbara Park's funny writing and Denise Bruckus' illustrations capture the reader's attention quickly! When Junie B. Jones wins the Cake Walk she picks what she thinks is the best cake out of all the possible cakes she could choose from. Junie B. chooses the yucky blucky fruitcake. Funny and entertaini...more

Oh my Goodness. I know many aren't a fan of the Junie B. series, but here in our house we ARE. I just reread this one out loud to my girls and it was laugh out loud funny in so many spots. Any book that gets my girls cackling and laughing hysterically, and makes me cry with laughter gets a good rating in my book! How can you not love the books that your children love and beg you to read? Now I want to go through and reread each and every one out loud to my kids again. My first grader just can't...more

This was the first Junie B. Jones book I read as a little kid. I just recently read it again and fell back in love with Junie B. This book makes me laugh out loud because Junie B. is such an interesting little girl. My favorite part of the book is when she can't carry the milk in the fridge so instead she puts orange juice in her cereal. That is something I would have done as a kid so it really made me crack up! I would definitely recommend this book to young readers and for a classroom!

The Junie B. Jones books were my absolute favorites in elementary school. I remember my 1st grade teacher reading them to my class. I really enjoyed this book in particular, because it was not one that I remember reading back then. I love the style that the writer uses, because in this book Junie B. is in kindergarten and her dialogue is exactly the way a kindergartner might talk. I think it helps to relate to students and makes them understand the story a little better.

I love Junie B. Jones! We have read all of them, and they are some of my favorite books. They are so fun to read aloud. They're probably not great to read to kids under about first grade because Junie B. uses poor grammar and says words like stupid, but my kids love them, as do I. The first time I read this one to Jordyn I had to stop reading for a few minutes because I was laughing so hard I couldn't go on. That also happened in Junie B. Jones is a Beauty Shop Guy.

I thought this was a great book. Junie B. is very excited about the Carnival at her school. She practiced for the games many times and thought she was gunna get all the prizes. It turns out that she is not as good at the games as she thought. On game she played was called the cake walk. She won so she got to pick out a cake. The one she picked was a fruitcake. She did not know that this was gross. But now she will have it for a long time......

A page turner and just as great as the others before it. This was the fifth book in the series. The events that happened in this story remind me of all the school events that we had growing up. I cannot wait to read these stories to children in the future as well. Even if you do not know any children to read to, read them yourself. As an adult, you'll laugh right along with every moment. Give this book a read!
Becky
This is a book that will make kids laugh. They will understand her vocabulary and enjoy listening to someone read it aloud to them. Junie B Jones is sassy, funny and manages to instill some lesson in each of her books. In this particular book, Junie learns not to lie about things that she doesn't like and that there are ways to be polite when you don't like something. Kids can truly relate to these.
Jennifer Kennedy
Junie B. Jones starts to realize that she is not the best when it comes to competition. When the school carnival is announced she is determined to win all the games and prizes possible. Junie B. practices each game at home, arriving at the carnival ready to win. However, her plans don’t work out quite as well as she wanted, leaving her with a yucky, blucky fruitcake.
