My thoughts:

Wow! Well written! Edge of your seat adventure! If you are an Indiana Jones fan, this one's for you! Highly recommend this one for young adult readers!

This is a story of teamwork, faith, friendship, betrayal, trust, mystery, struggle, and belief.

I enjoyed every page! The characters are great; thoughtfully created and charming in their own ways. The storyline is fantastic! This would be a great read-a-loud for middle school. This is one of those stories that gets a person excited ab...more

Just finished Frank's new book!

Guardians of the Hidden Scepter is a departure from Frank Cole's popular Hashbrown Winters series. Cole proves he is a versatile author, capable of writing compelling fiction in a variety of settings. I thoroughly enjoyed Frank's latest creation and look forward to reading the next one.

The pace of the story is well set. I liked getting to know the characters early on. Amber and Trendon make a great combo- playing off of each other nicely. It's fun to see their rela...more

Amber is a smart kid. Especially for a 14 year old. Good thing she goes to an advanced school where she gets to take cool classes, like independent archeology. But when her favorite teacher up and disappears, Amber has a feeling this final exam will be unlike any other. And she's right.

Guardians of the Hidden Scepter (Cedar Fort, 2011) takes Amber and her classmates on a global quest to find their missing teacher. By using the tricks of the trade Dorothy Holcomb taught them, they are able to fol...more

Fire and Ice is honored to be one of the stops on The Guardians of The Hidden Scepter blog tour hosted by Cedar Fort Books.

If you are looking for a high adventure YA book with a fun twist of humor, this one's for you! Frank L. Cole's writing is witty and sarcastic with an intelligent archeology smart heroine and a junk food shoveling sidekick named Trendon. What started out as four students enrolled in a private school's archeology course soon turns into an uncovered conspiracy with plenty of b...more

I received this from NetGalley.

I started this book on a flight from Baltimore to Salt Lake in March, then stayed up half the night to finish it - so I guess you could say it kept my interest. Just like Fablehaven entertained adults as well as the young adults it was intended for, Guardians of the Hidden Scepter is another one that crosses ages very well. It has an Indiana Jones style of adventure, mixed with suspense and humor that combine to make a really fun read with great characters. Trendon, the "techno snacking geek" wa...more

This is an adventure book that both girls and boys will love. Amber is a 14 year old girl who loves her extracurricular archaeology class. It is taught by the vibrant Ms. Holcomb, who prefers to be called Dorothy.

Dorothy takes Amber to a museum and tells her that she is leaving for a while and gives her an antique necklace. Then a few weeks later a mysterious letter is sent to Amber, Trendon, Joseph, and Lisa. They begin to unravel the clues in the letters and figure out that Dorothy is in troub...more

Move over Indiana Jones, here comes Amber and her pals. Part mystery, all suspense, The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter is a rollicking adventure story that is sure to be literally devoured by even the most stubborn readers. I was immersed enough in these characters and their struggles that I read straight through the book in a hour. Yes, it's really that good.

A solid plot line is built around Amber's relationship with her archeology teacher, Ms. Holcomb, or Dorothy as she prefers to be called....more

This book was fantastic! I did not want to put it down. The book follows Amber, a high school student with an apititude for puzzles and archaeology. After receiving a mysterious letter from their teacher, Amber and 3 fellow students start to worry about her. Their concern soon turns into an adventure that takes the around the world.

I love having a strong, smart female character. I know there are others, but I feel like you can never have too many good role models for young women. Especially one...more

When Amber’s archeology teacher, Dorothy invited her for some late night research, she couldn’t wait to go with her. But she never knew that she will be breaking into the museum with her to see the displays and artifacts. Later, when Dorothy is kidnapped, Amber and her friends go on an adventure to rescue her and recover the ancient artifact her teacher was trying to protect.

I don’t review a lot of teen books so I requested a copy from the author and it turned out to be a good read. This book is...more

I've had finals over the last week or so, and The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter was a very welcome distraction from studying. It drew me in with all of the archaeology talk, and the crazy terms that I'd never heard of. I was eager to know more, and to see where the story went. The further I got into the story, the more I wanted to know, and thankfully, since the main character Amber was extremely curious and liked to dig for answers, I usually got to know more. :)

The characters in this book we...more

It's so hard to find a good, old-fashioned adventure story anymore. Most of those stories now rely on techno gadgets, explosions or visits from alien spacecrafts. But, this book reminded me of those Indiana Jones movies or that book, King Solomon's Mines. Just good fun, a good mystery and an adventure you can really sink your teeth into.

Amber is an archeology student who loves research, has 3 great friends and dotes on her college professor. When that professor goes missing, it is up to Amber an...more

I have always pictured archeologists as guys wearing khaki shorts running around the desert with picks and shovels. It never even occurred to me that a fourteen-year-old girl could be an archeologist. This book is a real eye-opener to the archeological world and the adventures it holds.

Amber’s archeology teacher, Dorothy, is very brave and a little kooky too. She takes Amber with her when she breaks into a museum to see the displays and artifacts. Later, when Dorothy is kidnapped, Amber and her...more

I liked this book -- a group of teens try to solve an archeological mystery. I liked the characterizations of Amber and Trendon. Many of the other characters, especially the bad guys, were a little flat and stereotyped, but I didn't mind it too much. I liked the twist on the Noah's ark story and the supernatural/alien creatures. I will definitely read #2 in this series.

One caution: This is marketed for middle grades and the cover looks like it's aimed at 4-6th graders. But I feel the level of vi...more

I bought this book for my son (9) and daughter(11) who both consumed it like a Popsicle in 100 degree heat. So of course I had to read it too. Frank Cole's other books, The Hashbrown Winters series are fun and imaginative so I had high expectations for this book. It was a page turner from the get-go. The storyline was creative and fresh and it moved along at a fast pace, keeping my interest up. It did feel a little rushed here and there, I wanted more. But the fast pace makes it great for 3rd an...more

This is a book that is full of adventure and page turning mystery right from the beginning. Dorothy is a dynamic and interesting archaeology teacher at an exclusive boarding school. However, when she goes missing, she leaves clues for her students to try and finish something that she has started. Fourteen year old Amber is intent on figuring out the puzzle and finding her favourite teacher and she encourages her classmates Joseph, Lisa and Trendon to help. This leads the kids to mystries to solv...more

I bought this four days ago and finished it today. It was both funny and riveting. I didn't want to put it down the night I started reading it(but I must have some sleep). I loved his sense of humor, and the mystery and suspense. The plot left me guessing until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I hope that he's considering writing a sequel. I would definitely recommend this to my friends and acquaintances. Thanks to Frank Cole for writing such a great book.

If you love Indiana Jones you will love this book. I was pleasantly surprised how great this book was. This book has it all mystery, friendship, trust, faith etc. I like the fact of during the book you should do the right thing for the right reason. A great YA read my 13 year old enjoyed it as much as I did and he rarely reads. He wants to know after this book and that says it all for me. This is a must and fun read.

Great job, Frank! I loved it. I'm not generally motivated to read the books I purchase for my boys and have been sitting on this gem for a while. Once I started, I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in a day.
I loved the characters - even the snarky one, Trendon, had plenty of redeeming moments. It was full of adventure, history, travel, and suspense. Can't wait to read the next one!

I'll be honest; I read this book because James Dashner said it was awesome. For some reason I don't love the cover, but you know what? It. Was. Great! I really enjoyed it. And you know what they say about judging books by covers . . .

This is a perfect MG story:

* young, brilliant, and brave characters
* non-stop, Indiana Jones-style storyline (which is doubly true since it's an archaeology adventure)
* biblical myths, hidden treasure, booby traps, scorpions, and faceless beasts
* kidnapping and...more

This is a middle reader, a fun read, somewhat like Fablehaven, in that the kids are looking for an artifact, to keep it safe from 'evil' men. Sort of like Indiana Jones, with teenagers. There is definitely a possibility for a sequel, which I would eagerly read.

I first looked at the cover and instantly didn't like it and remembered the saying to not judge a book by it's cover. So I read it and was pretty happy that the story was really good.

Pleasantly surprising! I'm not sure how I feel about this book being written for a younger audience. The first half is fairly steady paced, but all necessary information to the intensity that comes a little later. Indiana Jones could find some competition in archeological savvy-ness with these kids.
Entertaining and informative (though a lot of what goes on is purely speculative and hasn't really been proven), this book made me exercise a bit of imagination power to visualize what was going on....more

Amber and Trendon help to keep a powerful artifact from falling into the wrong hands after their teacher Dorothy Holcomb goes missing. Interesting tie-ins to biblical history.

The cover of this book is deceptive in that it appears to be a middle grade novel, yet the characters are actually in college. My big issues are that the story jumps right off without giving me a main character to care about, and I never felt like I really knew her at all throughout the entire book. As a matter of fact. I had to keep reminding myself the MC was a girl. All too often she was in the middle of situations where she responded like a guy. The head-hopping on several occasions also bot...more

This was a very fun, Indiana Jones-style adventure, with archeology students setting off to help their teacher uncover a mysterious artifact. I loved the very inventive artifact, and what they discovered, loved the characters, and thought the ending was awesome and creepy! I did feel it was a bit slow in the beginning of the book, but once it gets going, it's well worth it.

Story premise is awesome. It seemed like the pace dragged because of extra description and wordiness.
