Now, I was a little apprehensive about these books at first because they were (cough, cough) "Historical Christian Romance" novels. Hmmm. But everyone at church kept going on and on about them. Including Kari Way. Now, Kari isn't the super girlie mushie lovie dovie type, so I concluded that they must be decent and not super cheesy. Which they weren't.

Don't read volume 1 without having volume 2 close by. These two books are of the remarkable story of Hadassah, a Jewish slave and Marcus, a Roman, in the turbulent times for Christians about 100 AD. I read volume 2 first ("An Echo in the Darkness") when I picked it off the shelf at the library. I'm not sure I could have handled the first one ("A Voice in the Wind") had I not know the fate of Hadassah. Even reading the first book second, my heart was beating so hard at the end...more

I swear these are the best books I've ever read in my life!!! They are definitely a quick, entertaining read. If you're looking for something intellectual, this is probably not the place. However, these books do shed light on historical aspects of Rome and the spread of Christianity. So something can be learned. The first book also teaches a great deal about being a servant even in the worst situations, which brought a great deal of conviction to my life.

Five stars isn't enough for this simply amazing series by Francene Rivers! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THESE BOOKS YET, BUY THEM, RENT THEM, READ THEM ASAP!!
Hadassa's heart and faith in God are stunning in their simpleness. Her willingness to follow God in all things made me hunger for a faith like hers, and caused my relationship with God to develop into something absolutely beautiful.

I was glued to the first two books of this series. The girl Hadassah had me from the start. Her unique character and faith was inspiring and mesmerizing.
Every once in awhile, her "perfect" faith would annoy me, I have to admit. I wanted her to be just a little less angelic and perfect.
After finishing the first one, I immediately picked up the second because I HAD to know what happened. The second kept me just as enthralled.

Anyone and everyone really!
This book series is set back in the Roman era of gladiators, Nero, and senators forced into seuicide. It is the story of a girl named Hadassah who was sold as a Jew in Rome after her city Jerusalem was attacked. She becomes the handmaiden of a spoiled brat named Julia but something about Hadassah's willing spirit starts to stir something up in her, but Julia doesn't like it. Julia's brother Marcus also starts showing signs of interest in the girl but for completely different reasons and some of ...more

This book series was one of the best series I have ever read. The life of a christian girl, after the temple fell in Jerusalem, being enslaved to a roman family. Another story of a man captured in Germania to become a gladiator. How their lives get intertwined, the people they meet, and the outcome of the future. What I like is that the characters really develop as you have about 10 years to follow them. Life in the Roman Empire and the struggle to survive, the early christians, traveling i...more

This trilogy is historical and inspirational. It's hard to get interested in the beginning of the first book, but if you stick with it, you will become very invested in the characters. It's set in the gladiator days, and the mindset of the people is very savage and calloused. And one character, who is a true Christian, changes the hearts of a family who has taken her in as a slave. What's fascinating is how they slowly begin to soften but don't realize that it's Hadassah's example of God's l...more

Although fictional, through the characters one can see what it should like to be Christlike in our Christian journey in this world. Although believers today would not face death in the arena, we are still in a battle against evil and face many struggles in our journey. The character of Hadassah reminds us that in Christ we can have strength to do all things. I was again reminded through Rivers' stories how only in seeking Him can we find truth and a peace that passes understanding.....That I c...more

A friend recommended these to me-- although I don't do Christian romance (I think it's rather sappy). It's about far more than romance, although that is the theme throughout the series. Hadassah is a brave soul in 1st century Rome and we can learn a lot from her. My biggest fault with this author is that she relies too heavily on the same old vocabulary (can anyone say "sardonic"?) and that part got old quicky. However, if you can overlook this minor detail, you'll enjoy Hadassah's pur...more

An intense portrayal of 1st century Christian life, and the persecution that went along with it. I literally felt like I was in Rome, Ephesus, and Jerusalem while reading this book. The characters are probably some of the best crafted I have read. Some might call this a romance novel but I'm not sure I could label it that way- there is just so much more going on. I would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of their beliefs. It is a fascinating story, and one that you might not be able...more

Having finished both books one and two in this series, I am NOT disappointed what so ever. You fall in love with all of the characters in these novels, and desperately hope they choose the "right" path.
I would recommend these books to anyone strong in their faith, questioning their faith, looking for answers or having found them. Any and all Christians would enjoy these books, other faiths would gain insight into the Christian belief system, and would definitely enjoy the story, ...more

Once again, Francine Rivers has astounded me. I could not put any of these 3 books down once i started. It follows the story of a barbarian captured on the fronteirs of Germania and of a Jewish slave girl Hadassah and a Roman aristocrat Marcus. Their stories interwined with each other and gave me a different outlook on anciet Rome.
I loved every word, sentence and paragraph. I don't have the right words to explain, but they are MUST read books. Francince Rivers is definately my favourite auth...more

This was by far the most amazing series I've ever read in my life. The emotions are so real and the dialog so good that I feel as if I lived in ~A.D.30 right with the characters. The first book ended so powerfully that I was crying while laying in bed very late at night (so I could finish) and sobbing so hard I was afraid I'd wake my husband because the bed was shaking. Absolutely amazing. Make sure the second book is on hand immediately after finishing the first, you will be dying for it!

This series is one that I consistently return to. They are absolutely the most captivating tales I have ever read. Rivers does an incredible job of describing ancient Roman civilzation that makes you feel and breath the world as it once was. Hadassah's journey to the Roman world from Jerusalem and her subsequent journey through her faith in Christ is a strengthening and inspiring one. I suggest this series to anyone who is looking for a good read that is hard to put down!

This is a 3 part Christian Fiction series. I loved it. Couldn't put it down. It's set in Rome shortly after the crucifiction of Christ. There is a lot of detail pertaining to the Roman lifestyle, but I love the historical nature of that stuff. The second book got a little slow, but was still wonderful. Roman lifestyle and the crucifiction of Christians really comes to life with the characters in this book. It kind of shows things from all sides. Loved it.

The books in this set are by far my favorite. They are written well and the characters have depth and seem real. The setting is Rome and Ephesus in the first century. I couldn't put any of the books down once I got my hands on them. There isn't much more I can say about them with giving too much away, but I will say that these charachters seem realistic and even the ones who strive to follow God do make mistakes, lending reality to the story.

These books are enthralling! Once I started reading them, I could not put them down. A great gem of historical fiction, set around the time when Jesus lived and was crucified. A warning: some of the violence in these books is a bit brutal, as the Romans of that period were pretty brutal creatures. Regardless, I loved these books after reading them that I asked for the set for Christmas. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

I read 3/4 of this series. The first two I could not put down. They revolved around the same main character. The third involved another character and I just couldn't seem to get into his story.
It is historical fiction set during the Roman time period when the first church started. Whiile I read this series I kept picturing the movie Gladiator. Good read. If you read the last book, let me know how it was!
