Why I bought the book: I had no K books in my TBR pile and so I appealed to my mate Tam who pointed me in the direction of this book. This means it's all her fault if I didn't like it ;).

Plot: Seth is recovering from a baffling break up with his boyfriend. He feels completely knocked sideways and as a result has retreated behind a number of different masks that he adopts to face situations in his life. He puts on his 'going out with friends' mask and meets his friend Marty at a bar where he unex...more

Seth Roland is a master of disguising who he truly is. He camouflages his thoughts and feelings behind a pretext of detachment to distance himself from others. The various personas he assumes are his way of coping with not having to cope with the intimacy of revealing his thoughts and emotions. Seth’s boyfriend Evan has just deserted him, flying off to the west coast without a backward glance, providing Seth with yet another mask to wear to cover the pain of his loss.

Seth is recovering from his lover's abandonment and has a variety of faces he puts on depending on the need. The night before a big storm is to high NYC, he runs into his first ever boyfriend from high school whom he hasn't seen in 12 years. When the weather makes it impossible for Kieran to get home, Seth offers for him to come home with him. He knows there is attraction, but wonders how much is residual young love, and how much is based on the present. The next day several feet of sno...more

Kindling Fire with Snow by Kate MacMurray is a gracefully written and finely detailed novelette about two formerly adolescent sweethearts who unexpectedly receive an opportunity to reconnect 13 years later as grown men. The story offers several hot, detailed sex scenes. It also infuses the two men with subtle nuances of culture and personality in a way that a lot of authors might not have bothered to do, given the short length of the story. Seth is introspective, Jewish, and insecure. Kieran is...more

Kate McMurray's latest book is a well-written and entertaining story about former high school boyfriends meeting again after many years apart. Caught in a blizzard Seth and Kieran reconnect with each other and as the snow falls and blankets the city they rediscover the joy and love they once felt. Will the old memories and the new ones they're creating be enough to build a future on?

I really enjoyed this "one that got away" themed story. Both Seth and Kieran are nice, likable men and their time...more

This novella has several things that I just plain love. Sure, there are long session of love making but I don't find myself anywhere being annoyed with it.

First, it has a theme of "the one who got away". Both Seth and Kieran used to be boyfriends when they were 18-years-old working at ice cream parlour. The two men are endearing characters and it is wonderful reading how they rekindle their relationship.

Second, New York City, trapped in an awful snowstorm, playing frolic with snow. I just thoug...more

I greatly enjoyed reading this novella. It's really just a light, fluffy way to pass the time, but it's well-written with what has got to be my favorite setting: a snowstorm! I would have rated the book five stars except for one problem. The author made too much obvious. She told instead of showing. There are some interesting character dynamics going on with Seth that would have been much better left for the reader to discover for herself by observing Seth interact with Kieran (or perhaps other...more

This novella tells the story of two thirty-year-old guys, Seth and Kieran, who run into each other in a New York bar. When they were seventeen they knew each other and had a crush on each other. They shared their first kisses and innocent orgasms together and lost touch when they went to college. Now, thirteen years later, they meet again by accident and have to spend some time together due to an upcoming snowstorm.

From alternating points of view we learn about their shared past, their present l...more

I like the theme, reuniting with your first love. Kieran and Seth met and fell for each other in high school when they worked at the same ice cream shop. But when Seth went off to college, he knew that things wouldn't work out. But he's always wondered about Kieran. So imagine his surprise when he runs into Kieran in a bar in NYC. Kieran, all grown up. Yummy time ensue. I really liked this one. B

Very good short m/m romance about two guys, who'd been each others first boyfriends in high school, who run into each other at a bar during a blizzard and have the chance to reconnect.

I expexted a bit more of a story to the reunion, so it's "only" 3.5 stars. Still a nice Christmas story!

This is a cute short story about two guys who happen to meet in a bar in NYC just as a blizzard is about hit NYC 12 years after they parted as teenagers and first loves to each other. Seth is still smarting over the breakup with this boyfriend of three years and Kieran is i town for a conference. The best part about the story is how Kieran convinces Seth that he needs to be honest and stop hiding from the world behind his "masks."

This is the first story I've read by the author and I look forwar...more

3.5 good but too short

A surprise meeting in his favorite bar, a derailed train and a blizzard who gives a snow day to all "non-essential employees" creates a chance for Seth to get back together with his first boyfriend, Kieran. They met at their summer job when they were seventeen, but haven't seen each other since. Now, more than a decade and several men for both of them later, they might be mature enough to make what was once a mostly innocent summer love into something that lasts.

Kate McMurray is a nonfiction editor. Also, she is crafty (mostly knitting and sewing, but she also wields power tools), she plays the violin, and she dabbles in various other pursuits. She’s maybe a tiny bit obsessed with baseball. She lives in Brooklyn, NY, with a presumptuous cat.
