Devastated, Kara was left without the answers she needed to keep her son safe... but the supernatural world won't let them get away that easily.

Kara’s young son, Alex, is just beginning to show his own Sentinel traits. Dr. Kara Cantrell moved to Zorro, Texas with her son Alex because nothing exciting ever happened there. It was quiet and safe. Until the murders started and the gorgeous Damien Morgan showed up. Kara senses immediately that he's a Sentinel - a protector of good and warrior against the evil Belians - and flees his presence. She can't go through the nightmare she experienced with her husband years ago. No more Sentinels in her life. Except her son is one, and untrained, he's a beacon to the Belian...more

Actually, it should be darned grateful it didn't get DNFed. Why? The first 50+ pages were one long What Would I Do moment. Then...

You get the real grit about what is involved in the whole Sentinel/Conductor non-relationship. Frankly, it skeeves me out. Ok, to be honest, I do not like it when sex is reduced from an entanglement to a ah... meaningless religious ceremony or something. And I *really* don't like it when the H shrugs at the possibility of pregnancy (because apparently a ghost suit is...more

What a terrific book! Touched by Darkness is a completely original and exciting urban fantasy romance that will keep you hooked from the very first chapter. The characters are deftly drawn with real emotional shadings that pull you into the world and don’t let go. Tightly paced, the book is a master class in how to write with passion, soul and intelligence. Every single page has depth to it and serves the story, adding atmosphere and tone as it moves the reader forward.

This not the usual genre that i usually read. I was quite impressed with the book! I am looking forward into reading the next book.
What would you do if your only son was born with powers and you knew that a bad entity would try and find you ? Would you do everything in your power to keep your child safe?
The book kept me wanting more to find out what happens! I give this book 5/5 stars!!!

What a unique and awesome story line!! Just wow!

I have to admit that when I began reading this the prologue was a little misleading. I honestly wasn't sure if this was going to be something I enjoyed or not. However, it is simply extreme backstory and the rest is written in a more contemporary way.

I loved the mystery and thrills in this book. I can honestly say that I was trying to figure out the "who done it" up until the very end!

The romance, while extremely unique and interestingly paranormal...more

Plot:

She’s wrong.Kara settles in the sleepy town of Zorro, Texas, convinced that she and her child have escaped the sinister reach of a supernatural underworld. But the appearance of Damien Morgan, a dangerous, alluring man with superhuman abilities, upends her quiet existence. Supernatural beings that aren’t werewolves, witches or vampires? That’s what you get with this book. It’s part one of a trilogy about a group of beings named Sentinels, reincarnated from Atlantis, by way of another galaxy. Sentinels are tasked with killing the evil beings from their world, called Belial. Since it’s an older book(although a re-release I think), it may not be a new read for you, but once I found it, bought it and started it, I read it non-stop and totally enjoyed myself along the...more

As far as paranormal devices in fiction go, the Sentinel/Conductor pairing is unusual. This alone makes the story worth reading. Damien and Kara share a tense relationship that takes the larger part of the book to loosen up. Both are strong and hard-headed. And Damien seems to be just a bit socially ignorant. Or maybe it is just arrogance. Or both. At any rate, these are great characters that you want to root for!

I am also a sucker for a story with a cute kid! Kara's son Alex is the cutie in thi...more

Let me start by saying that it was a good book. It was written well and the characters seemed well developed.

So why am I only giving a 3 star rating? Well, I may be a little harsh on this rating, sorry.

This book is a paranormal book. And paranormal isn't really my 'style' of book. The most of read is vampire and I've read only about a hand full of those. I thought maybe I was ready for this 'type' of paranormal but I honestly wasn't. It just didn't work for me. Because of my lack of interest i...more

Since there is no half star marks, I am giving this one a 3.5 officially!

This was my first Catherine Spangler book and I snagged it free from amazon. I was hooked by the summary and went ahead and dived right in. Ok so first off, as I began reading, I felt like I had missed something. I went back to make sure I started at the beginning and made sure that this was the first book in the series. It might have just been me, but I was confused by the authors introduction of the Sentinels and the Bel...more
Mad about
Kara has done the best she can keeping her son safe since his father died but he's inherited more than his looks and where ever they go they'll no longer be safe, something which is hard for Kara to accept.

Their sleepy little town has been a haven for them but a spate of murders has brought a Sentinel to town and to their door.

Good little read that had a lovely ending. Great freebie pick up

This book delivers exactly what it promises, with well developed characters, a solid mystery, and just the right balance between plot and romance. The writing is seamless - every time I picked it up, I had trouble putting it back down.

While this book does have sex scenes, they dance an elegant line between explicit and implied. The romance between the two characters is believable, and I really liked the tension involved in it. This isn't my usual fare, but I'm making an exception for the author'...more

I was surprised by this novel. It wasn't like your normal paranormal romance. There was always that edge of will the characters fall in love and be able to catch the villain. Damien and Kara connected wonderfully. I cant wait to read the next book in the Sentinel Series.
Kyra Dunst
Wow. Damian and Kara are both damaged by past losses, but they make one hell of a couple once they allow themselves to let go. Alex is a sweetheart, serious but with a childish quirkiness that you can't resist. I will definitely read more from this author.

While the concept was interesting and the writing is decent, I found the pace of this book too slow for my liking. That and the heroine, whom I found exasperating and unappealing made it a heavy go. Hopefully , in the next book the pace will pick up.

I really wanted to smack the mother upside the head. If not for that, maybe I might have gotten into the book a bit more. But there were other problems as well... for me at least.

It is well written, which was very nice. But ugg... the female lead just made me want to shake her... hard.
Teresa
This was book 1 of The Sentinel series, however we're not left hanging at the end. I really enjoyed this book! A 'who done it', that I never figured out! A rare occurrence! Nail biting (no, really, I did bite my nails) suspense and heart pounding romance.
Deanna Albert
Wonderful!

I absolutely loved this story, and will read more in the series if I can. Catherine Spangler, if you ever read this, thank you so much! This is the first time I've seen a Farscape reference in a book, and you would have gotten my respect and love for just that if the way you write and the characters you create hadn't already won me over.

Touched by darkness

Touched by darkness is a great read. it's got some really cool stuff that goes on in the book .

I've read other books by Spangler and enjoyed them, but this one was just sort of so-so for me. I realize this was a new series and she needed to give us some background information, but I didn't really start to enjoy the book until around the last 75 pages. Regardless of the hunky hero and the tempting cover art, I just wasn't overly compelled to pick it up because the story wasn't grabbing my attention. Then again maybe it was my just my frame of mind when I started this. *shrug* At least I di...more

This is one great read! I had never read a book by Catherine Spangler, but I will be reading more very quickly!

Well written, great story line and a new take on paranormal reads. Sentinels! I love it!

I voraciously tore through this book like a mosquito at a soccer game. (I tried lots of analogies and that's the best I could come up with.) My only other experience with paranormal romance is through Thea Devine's books, which I also love. I'm not a fan of violence (even in written form), but I understand that it goes with the territory for this type of story-line. The book is beautifully-written, the story masterfully told. My favorite part of the fantasy aspect is that the protagonist was rav...more

“It started as a beautiful, sunny Saturday, with the air so clear and crisp, one couldn't help but inhale deep breaths of the cleansing freshness, and feel as if a multitude of God's benevolent blessings must be shining down upon the entire world. Terrorism, disease, poverty and hunger, grief and despair were distant threads of reality, too dim to possibly exist.” 0 likes
