I think that the illustrations are what turn this from a pretty good story into a very good one. In the previous Buffalo book, Audrey Vernick used the very basic idea of substituting a buffalo for a small child in a familiar situation. Carrying this onward, this volume is about what happens when the Buffalo hints at wanting music lessons. Like most Buffaloes, though, this one has asked for a lot of things in the past, and has had a very short attention span. As a result, the closet is full of un...more
"Bump Budda Budda Bump, TAT TATTA TAT TAT! BOOOOOOOOM!
I think your buffalo is trying to tell you something. He was born to play drums. You have to teach him how."
There are so many challenges for a buffalo who wants to play drums - what to sit on, how to hold drumsticks with his hooves, where to bang away without disturbing the neighborhood (it can be really loud!) and how to share his talent with others.

Really funny book. Jonas (5.5) and Miles (3.5) didn't quite understand all the jokes and were a bit confused by the second person narrative. I think someone a little older (and someone a lot older, too) would appreciate it more. My favorite line: "I think your buffalo is trying to tell you something. He was born to play drums. You have to teach him how. People may think that's silly. But you must be used to that. Did anyone say, "Hey that's a really great idea!" when you brought a baby buffalo h...more
Fun story about encouraging kids (or buffalos!) to pursue their interests. The syntax and structure of a second-person narrative isn't easily understood by all kids, so maybe save this one for older ones. Lots of winks to parents, and seeing a buffalo doing kid-things is definitely silly enough to be entertaining.
Really great crayon drawings make this book stand out.
Probably this book is best read together with elementary age kids, because of the potential for confusion.

Your buffalo is trying to tell you something. He wants to learn drums. And no, this won't be like the last time, or the time before that. In fact, let's just forget all about the closet full of abandoned pursuits. This time it's for real. Vernick's book is chock full of laughs, visual and otherwise, as we go about teaching our buffalo to drum. And let's face it: that buffalo is darn cute. The ending provides a wonderful ba-dum-bump to the rest of the story.
A funny picture book that encourages readers to look for the signs that their pet buffalo may be ready to begin drum lessons. A good read for kids that empowers them to pursue their unique interests.
Illustrations are detailed and add humor. I love the dizzy eyeballs the buffalo often gets, sooo cute!

Why is it so necessary to beat, so to speak, a concept to death? The buffalo from Vernick's school outing reappears here (oh when will the endless sequels to everything stop!). While cute enough, the humor will be more apparent to the parents of musically inclined children than to the children themselves.

Great for kids who are interested in pursuing music. Even better for the parents who will have to listen to their practicing.

I hope the fact that this is a second book, which is just as wacky and hilarious as the first, means that the start of a long and mad-cap series of books featuring that lovable, crazy buffalo!
