The Monkees had everything—a popular TV show, hit records, and adoring fans. Everything but control over their careers. Author Eric Lefcowitz chronicles the kaleidoscopic journey of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, following each of the four Monkees, together and apart, from 1965 to the present day. A must-read for music fans, “Monkee Business" is ...more

I will not apologize for having been (and remaining, to some extent) a Monkees fan. I came into the mania during its third trip around the sun, in the mid to late 1980s. Some may argue this MTV-encouraged wave of Monkeemania served as the pop group's initial comeback, but others will confirm that a less-prominent renewal of interest in the band and accompanying TV show happened in the mid-70s when The Monkees enjoyed a healthy run in syndication. No doubt that gust of wind propelled Micky Dolenz ...more

Rock 'n' roll biographies are like "M&M's" or "Lays Potato Chips" or, more appropriately for me, "Better Made Potato Chips." I read one, and I want to read another. I find them addictive. They can also have a slightly interchangeable quality as one band or artists arc can be very much like another. Kind of like watching repeated episodes of "Behind The Music" where the you can time out which elements appear in which commercial segment. ("Rise to fame in first segment, breakup or downfall in ...more

The "definitive" (more like, one of the only) biography of the Monkees, I read Eric Lefcowitz's original version of this book back in 1985 when it was called The Monkees Tale. Completely re-written and reorganized as Monkee Business, plus the addition of another 25 years worth of history, I delved into Monkeemania much as I had when I was a pre-teen in the 1980s.

Thrown together for a TV show about a band that actually became a band, the four guys were like brothers. Who have fought like cats an
I read this on my ipod while vacationing in Disney World. It was perfect for that environment: quick, fun, easy to read. I grew up watching the Monkees on MTV during their 80s revival, and I found the whole story of the band really, really interesting. I'd heard the author of the book on NPR, and he sounded like a smart guy with an interesting take on the band. The book definitely has some interesting tidbits, and I liked the author's point of view, but it certainly wasn't the best-written book ...more
A fine introduction to the band, and a very interesting story. It's interesting to consider what might have been if the individual Monkees had played characters, rather than, to a certain extant, themselves. However, the line was blurred, and remained that way for the rest of their lives. It doesn't change the quality of the songs, and for many, The Monkees were as much an influence musically as many other bands from that era.
The Monkee story is fascinating. This quick read is a page turner but sometimes the author's prose make you feel like you are reading a college paper.
