Ugh.
My first finished read of 2013, and it had to be this book. THIS BOOK. I was alternately charmed and repulsed by Midnight Marriage. On one hand, the settings and vignettes were nicely detailed; on the other, the writing was clunky and the characters inconsistent. (If you're still reading the first couple of chapters of Midnight Marriage and you're already sick of the phrase "injured duelist", don't worry. It's only used about 19 times. It'll soon end.) Archaic words are used throughout the...more

I....what? No.

I found this one on Amazon promotion (read: free!) and thought it was going to be one of the good ones. A secret, forced marriage in which the hero and heroine have to fall in love through adversity!? YES! It had all the hallmarks of a "good" romance novel.

Well, in reality, it was not to be so. They marry at very young ages via family machinations (she was 12, I'm not sure how old he was) in the first chapter. In the second chapter I as very confused as it seemed no wedding had e...more

In the beginning, the interaction between Deb and Julian was loving and sweet. I really enjoyed both characters, that is, until Deb found out who he really was. Then the book went downhill for me. I mean, what the heck happened?! Julian turned angry, mean and rude. WHAT?! There are just no words for his behavior. And Deb’s reaction is no better. After this big reveal, the struggle to get to our HEA was just chaotic and frustrating and I wasn’t really into the story anymore. But I finished.

Crafted in Lucinda Brant's unique and engaging style, Midnight Marriage captivated me from the very first page and held me entranced to the last word. On more than one night I grunted and groaned when my bedtime arrived. I always thumbed my nose at it and read an easy hour beyond when I should have been asleep; I simply did not want to put it down. The language of the book is extensively flavored with words and phrases used in the 1700s that add immensely to one's feeling of being in the past wi...more

This is a historical novel set in the 18th century prior to the French Revolution.

A betrothal or secret marriage between members of the aristocracy at very early ages was not unusual. It was necessary to ensure a legitimate heir for the succession of property. Even an unconventional lady who leaves the confines of her own household is not without precedent – Defoe s Moll Flanders caused a scandal at the time it was written.

The storyline is generally credible and believable with some unusual twis...more

I think the premise is a good one; especially in light of this book being based on true events. However, it's a perfect example of what a book should not do, and that is to bog the reader down with multiple POV without page breaks, and even worse; to deliver this style within the confines of a single paragraph.
There were occasions when a new character with new thoughts was introduced at the beginning of a paragraph while the same paragraph was ended with another character's POV. What this does...more

At 12, Lady Deborah is rousted out of bed and married to a teenager whose name she doesn't catch. The whole episode is so strange that she soon dismisses it as a dream. She grows up to be a beautiful young lady, but is so independent (she travels to France unchaperoned at age 16 to nurse her scandalous older brother, for instance) that she is not particularly well thought of in Society. Then she comes across a man bleeding in the forest after a duel and saves his life. A few weeks later, they en...more

Midnight Marriage continues the saga of the Roxton family, which began with Noble Satyr (recently reviewed). Antonia and Roxton’s son, Julian, is wayward and headstrong, to the point where his father, fearing he will either make a disastrous marriage or litter the country with illegitimate by-blows, arranges a match between the youthful Julian and Deborah Cavendish. Deborah has no recollection of her midnight marriage at the age of twelve to a weeping, bellicose teenager. Julian is sent to the C...more

Another enthusiastic keeper! I guess everyone has a favorite style, era, genre, author... Lucinda Brant hits every single one of mine. She is an incredibly gifted writer, pulling the reader in immediately, then never allowing them a minute to close the book until the final page is reluctantly turned, sighed over, and digested.

"Midnight Marriage" is the second in a three book series (oh please, oh please, let there be more!) It focuses on Julian, son of The Duke of Roxton and his much younger wif...more

After a somewhat lackluster beginning, I quite liked this book. I didn't particularly like the hero at first, but he grew on me. Why is it that romance heroes always think it's a good idea to never tell heroines anything and just do what they think is best?

As a side note, I knew exactly what this was based on before I even got to the author's note. I feel special now. (Eloisa James has a book based on it, too. And I'm pretty sure I've read at least one other.)

I can't read the rest of this series...more

This Sequel to Noble Satyr didn't disappoint. This is now my fav read by Lucinda Brant. It is the story of Antonia and Roxton's son Julian, who is married off at Midnight (reason for the title) when just 16 years old (for a unpardonable act which his father cannot forgive) to 12 year old Deborah who has no clue what is going on only that she is put through a marriage ceremony with a weeping boy who is the handsomest boy she has ever set eyes on! Julian is then banished to the continent and Debor...more

Because I just have to occasionally filk my reviews:

I was woken up at midnight and my nurse made me high
They married me off to a drunken teenager cuz I was high
I don't remember getting married at all, and now I know why-y-y
Because I was high
Because I was high
Because I was high
da da dum dum dum dum

In this novel which was apparently partially based on a true story, a 12-year-old girl is woken up at midnight, drugged, and married off to a Duke's son for reasons that make sense only if you're an ar...more

For me this wasn't the most scintillating read of my life, but neither was it bad.

I did loose focus during the first third of the book, however, the plot and place picked up over the remainder. There were a couple of typos, and the truly irritating sentence towards the end "....he pulled on some pants" .... really, they didn't wear pants. I do feel that if you want to write an historical novel it does behove you to try to stay at least true to the details, but that could just be me. I'd like to...more

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant is a Georgian romance inspired by true historical events. In Midnight Marriage, a young girl of only twelve and a rebellious youth are wed in a ceremony conducted in the dark of night. Then the youth is whisked away by his father, and the young girl returned to her bed. She does not clearly remember the incident as she was drugged. Years later, as an adult, she meets him again but does not realize she is wed to him. He wishes to win her heart without her knowin...more

"Marriages did not happen in the dead of night, between strangers. And they certainly did not happen in nightgowns after taking a measured dose of laudanum."

The bride was twelve, and sent back to the nursery with no memory of the the wedding. The groom was in disgrace and very, very drunk. After the ceremony he was banished to the continent for the Grand Tour until it was time to return and claim his bride…

And that's really all I want to tell you, I don't want to spoil the fun. I loved this to...more

Well if you like "Noble Satyr" book one of the Roxton series, you are going to love "Midnight Marriage" by Lucinda Brant. Its another wonderful Georgian Historical Romance, with a captivating young lady with striking red hair, Deborah. Being a breath of fresh air that she is, any gentlemen would indeed love to take her hand in marriage. Oblivious to this, she is still waiting for mister right, a man that truely, deeply loves her and her alone. Measuring every man up to the man she dreams about i...more

This is a sequel to 'Noble Satyr'. Both books have a Heyeresque feel to them and as I said in the first books review, that is a good thing. I was very impressed that the sequel was just as powerful a story as the first book. The historical backdrop of Georgian England (Bath)/France (Paris) was still there (foreshadowings of the French Revolution and unrest), but the focus was on the H/H. The intrigue and plot turns were good. I like how the story begins with an inexplicable event and then unrave...more

hmmmm, I'm torn

It starts well, and i can actually buy that first marriage. Nonetheless, that second one... It was when I started rolling my eyes - how can you actually believe someone, back then, and with that kind of lineage, on plus, would marry someone she didn't even know, whose family, life, the most common details you can imagine, you know nothing about?
That was silly, for me.

As the story unfolds, the author redeems the story, and if gets more credible again.
And that's why this is a 3 star...more

Could not finish this. Interesting premise but it just kept going and going repeating the same stuff over and over and became irritating. The male lead has a Jekyl and Hyde personality which is not at all appealing. He lied to get Deb to marry him. The subplot about a possible trial back in France for breach of promise was just stupid. I don't see how the key 'evidence' is apparently the size of the male lead's gentials. I got tired of the excessive usage of 'green-eyed gaze' and 'dark red hair...more

This story is the next best thing to a time machine as it will literally take you to a place back in time. The dialogue is authentic but does not bog the reader down. There is historical detail embedded so subtly and consistently throughout, one may as well truly believe they have lived before in this era. I enjoyed the growth of the characters and the plot outcome. I wish there were more stories based in the Georgian period. I Love this book and will read more from the same writer! The depth of...more

I wanted to like these characters more than I did. Deb starts out well enough, but then doesn't really develop much beyond vaguely rebellious. As for nearly everyone else, the misogyny. Good LORD, the misogyny. There's way too much random judgment of women as whores going on here.

Honestly, if you're considering this one I would just read Georgette Heyer's "These Old Shades" trilogy instead. The first in that series is one of my least favorite of her books, but you'll still get better dialogue, c...more

This was such a lovely and clean historical romance. I enjoyed the premise, especially since it was derived from a true story.

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant was supremely sweet with a sublime love story.

I look forward to reading more work from this author.

This is the second book of the Roxton Series.

A wonderful book....with great characters once again.....Julian and Deb.....as well as the Duke of Roxton and the Duchess Antonia. I was excited that the son of the Duke and Duchess.....continues the story that was started in the Noble Satyr, but with Julian as a main character. I wasn't sure how the Midnight Marriage would unfold..but it was awesome. I couldn't put the book down....which is great when it is a series. Now I can't wait for the 3rd book...more

this is a marvelously gifted author, almost as good as georgette heyer, in my opinion! i got her first book free, and now have bought all the others. these characters engage you from the very start of the book, and the author does not take liberties with the clothes, language, morals of the time. my only complaint is witht he formatting of this e-book--1/2 a chapter was repeated. but this barely detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

I enjoyed this book. I've never read a book from this era and it was fun to read about it for a change. This was a clean read and rather sweet. about a couple of kids forced into marriage at a very young age then separated until later in life. The young lady didn't even remember anything of the marriage. It all end happy with a slight twist. At a of the book the author tells that this was based on a true story. How fun is that.

Midnight Marriage is book 2 in the Roxton series. This was a free Kindle download and was much better than I thought it would be. I will definitely be breaking my rule of not paying for any downloads and buying book 1, Noble Satyr.

This is historical fiction at its best. It is not soppy or filled with overly long descriptions. It engages you right from the start. Lucinda Brant is a new author to put on my to read list.

Deb is a wonderful example of a woman pushing against society for her independance. I loved this novel and her independance in the face of a strict society. The dream of love at first sight is something that I feel most women (and maybe men?) would love to believe in, but few are able to find and continue through life. I fell into this novel and could not stop reading it. The escape into this world was total and complete.

I write Georgian historical romance and crimance—crime with lashings of romance. All my books are set in the 18th Century, spanning 1740 to early 1780s England, with occasional crossings to the France of Louis XV.
My novels have been described as “a throwback to the Golden Age of romance, but with a modern voice” and “heart wrenching drama with a happily ever after”.
