Bukan tidak...more

From a librarian's perspective, this is a little disappointing because of the lack of specific details about the Room to Read libraries, their patrons and their local staff. To a cynical person, the book will eventually become tedious because of the relentlessly optimistic and heartwarming tone. (To give the author credit, he is honest about his personal doubts and struggles with his decision to leave his lucrative job and work for four years without a salary to improve literacy in rural Asia.

Leaving Microsoft tells the story of John Wood's disilluionment with corporate life and the creation of Room to Read- an international charity which builds schools and libraries and endows girl's scholarships in Napal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and other third world countries. Mr. Wood narrates the story from his first creative spark to the arrival of the 1 millionth donated book. Most of the narrative is inspiring and interesting, but 2/3 of the way through I was getting tired of the same ...more

recommends it for: people looking to start a nonprofit
This is the story of John Wood, a Microsoft executive who left in order to start Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that builds schools and libraries in developing countries. It's based in San Francisco and has grown incredibly quickly. Anyone considering starting a nonprofit organization should read this book. It reinforced my belief that successful nonprofits should act like for-profits in many ways, e.g. demanding measurable results. Wood is a visionary and excellent fundraiser, but he IS...more

There is no doubt that the story told by John Wood is inspirational. While reading, there were several times that I was taken by his humanity. Few people in this world are as giving and selfless as he has been.
The issues with this book are more literary than with the story. It is clear that he is a first time writer that lacks a writing voice. The book cycles through the same themes and ideas over and over until I was just tired of reading it.
I think that his story could have better been...more

John Wood isn't a writer and never claims to be, but that fact is sometimes evident in this book. However, the story is great and the message is even better. While it was inspiring to hear about this guy who completley changed his life once he saw some of the world's descrepances, you also have to remember that he had built up a pretty nice fourtune during his time at Microsoft. Not to discredit any thing that he is done, because it is all amazing, but "changing the world" is much ea...more

I came across this book while on a business trip and had to buy it to read ont he flight home. This is the story of a Microsoft bigwig who traded in his job security (and lucrative stock options) for the much more rewarding pursuit of enriching the lives of disadvantaged children around the world. But Wood's story isn't just about helping people, it's also about people helping themselves, about people coming together, about humanity at its finest, along with some truly remarkable tales of high...more

I love stories like this... an initial simple response to a need becomes a life's work. John Wood was taking a break from his executive poition at Microsoft and trekking in Nepal when he became aware of the fact that there were no books for the kids in those villages. He sends an email back home for some friends and family to send their used books and it becomes an overwhelming success. My only difficulty with his story is the bordering on manic workaholic attitude he brings to it. May be good ...more

We read this for our book club- it is the only book in ages that everyone in the group read! It is easy to read, and very engaging. We were all REALLY impressed with what he has done in taking his knowledge from Microsoft and applying it to his passion- educating kids in 3rd world countries. Room to Read has been extremely successful due to the models he has put in place to ensure that the community feels that they own the school or library. Additionally, he has created a community of fund raise...more

Wow. An inspiring read and an amazing story of what one person can do. The actual book wasn't as good as Three Cups of Tea, although the story is very similar. The difference is that this guy had a ton of resources when he started where as Greg Mortensen (Three Cups) had nothing. It is not surprizing given this major difference the success that John's project has had. I really enjoyed reading about what he accomplished and have to wonder when the heck he found the time to write a book! Also, it ...more

I am absolutely amazed by John Wood's strength, courage, faith, loyalty and dedication to this unbelievable cause!!! We need more people like him in this world!!! His philantrophic efforts are amazing. It is a story about self sacrifice, true dedication, unwavering faith and continuous perseverance for the lost and underpriviledged children of the world!!! I salute you, Mr Woods!! My goal is to be able to pledge a school in the future for your Room to Read organization so I can be a part of thi...more

This was a great answer to a lot of questions I had about how a successful non-profit starts. Also being an employee of Microsoft I thought it was an interesting look in the outside, turning to another adventure but still within the context of having been experienced in the corporate world.

There were a couple chapters that I found to be uninteresting, but overall it was a touching story which is an ongoing pursuit of John Wood. I was moved enough to donate to the Room to Read program as ...more
