Really!? How did I not know earlier that the hero of this book was going to be Thomas “Veck” DelVecchio, Jr from Lover Unleashed

Gah, how awesome is this? I love the crossover.

This must mean we'll also get to see his partner...Jose del la Cruz, yippee. Endless possibilities here; Butch sightings, Lessers, The Band of Bastards (Throe) and the subsequent headaches leftover from his scrubbing.

The year long wait for Tohr's book just got a little easier! You rock warden.

I didn't care much for Detective DelVecchio when JR Ward introduced him in Lover Unleashed. In fact, I wondered what the hell his side-story was even doing in that book, since it had little or no relation to anything else in the storyline. Obviously, the plan was drive Black Dagger Brotherhood fans to the Fallen Angel series... and I think the idea was kind of off-putting. I would have read this book anyway, but I hated the idea that Ward stuffed its set-up into LU... a novel that was already fr...more I didn't care much for Detective DelVecchio when JR Ward introduced him in Lover Unleashed. In fact, I wondered what the hell his side-story was even doing in that book, since it had little or no relation to anything else in the storyline. Obviously, the plan was drive Black Dagger Brotherhood fans to the Fallen Angel series... and I think the idea was kind of off-putting. I would have read this book anyway, but I hated the idea that Ward stuffed its set-up into LU... a novel that was already fractured with so many storylines, the main characters were barely the focus at all.

That being said, in his own novel, Veck makes for a pretty interesting lead. He is haunted by the legacy of his serial killer father and a darkness that he has always carried within himself. And as our book begins, he is convinced that he is responsible for that attack on another serial killer named Kroner. Reilly is the Internal Affairs officer sent in to investigate. And she becomes his temporary partner while the police try to figure out what really happened to Kroner. Together, they begin to investigate the disappearance of Sissy Barten... the young virgin Devina killed in Covet. Veck thinks Kroner had something to do with it, since Sissy disappeared around the same time as his other victims.

In the meantime, Jim is determined he will find Sissy's body and somehow get her soul back from Devina. And his single-minded focus is causing a rift with his back-up angels Ad & Eddie. At times, the Jim and Sissy vibe comes across as a borderline romantic possibility... which bothers me. Sissy is 19. Jim is 40. Yes, they're actually both dead, but it's still squicky. And with Veck working Sissy's disappearance (and obviously with him being the soul in need of saving for the book) Jim has twice the motivation to be a part of his life.

I found that I liked the storyline of Veck's internal struggle, though how Devina got her hooks into him via his father wasn't entirely clear to me. As with all Ward books, the sex was rockin' -- though I was disappointed with Reilly for her lack of faith at a pivotal time. The real meat of the book for me, though, centered on Jim, Ad & Eddie. Some pretty powerful developments take place within their dynamic and we can expect the repercussions to continue into future books. We're also tipped off on the identity of the soul in question for the next book. It's a familiar face, but I don't know how I feel about it.

Overall, it was a solid installment in the series... very consistent in tone to the books that came before it. 4 stars.

Okay, I know I have 4 stars down, but I'd really give this book about 3.5 stars. I enjoyed reading it, but there were parts of the books that I did not enjoy as much as "Vech's" storyline. Also, I am finding this series is becoming formularic (sp?). One thing I did find interesting were the Brotherhood references through out the book. Also, JR has not lost her talent at writing great sex scenes for her characters. In fact, she does a great job in one scene leaving her characters and readers hang...more

This had me rolling my eyes constantly. The, smart tough woman who holds her own in a man's world and the guy who 'respects the hell out of her' for it. Ward's clichés are getting tiresome! (Meanwhile he's the typical self torturing hero and if she were a guy I'd say she was thinking with her dick).

I'll probably read this eventually despite the shameless Envy book promotion stunt Ward pulled in Lover Unleashed (and the fact that I wasn't too crazy about Crave) . I don't like being manipul...more

Everyone has been watching Veck to see if he is truly like his dad. Even he himself is unsure if he has turned into his dad, because he has a probable serial killer at his feet almost dead, but he has no memory of touching him. If you read BDB, you know what really happened, but Tom doesn't. Enter Sophia Reilly, an Internal Affairs officer. She has been assigned to the case. The problem is, she has to fight her attraction to Tom, as well as be unbiased about the investigation against him. (There is no way I could deny this sexy cop anything.)

Unbeknownst to Tom, he has been visited by Devina. The only thing that he knows is that somebody seems to be haunting his house and when he throws a shadow he sees two shadows. Tom himself is fighting his attraction to Sophia. But with the craziness of his life, he is determined to keep her at a distance. Love, however, always finds a way and soon Veck and Sophia find themselves deeply involved.

Meanwhile, Jim is trying to keep Veck out of Devina's clutches. Not knowing that Devina with her advance knowledge of the game has already planted her evilness deep in Tom. Now it becomes a race to find out if the light of love can show the path through the darkness. Devina continues to spread her evil as she works to separate Jim, Eddie and Adrian with dire consequences, as one angel gives up his life.

I loved Veck and Sophia as a couple and the sexy times when they were together was absolutely hawt! I was at first disappointed in Sophia as she was too easily led to believe the worst of Tom, but forgave her in the end. Another sad part was Sissy and how some of that was resolved. Would love to know where we are headed with Jim and that situation. Love Nigel and Colin and was a little surprised at where that went. I love this series and can't wait for the next book. Team Jim for the WIN! :-)

All though Envy was my least favorite so far of the Fallen Angels series, it still held my undivided attention throughout the entire book and I still finished it in 2 nights, and it definitely was still a 4 star book.

Whatever Ward does, whatever twists and turns she puts within the plots that we as readers do not want to see or agree with, no matter what, the woman can create a great hero. Envy like the others in the series, has heros in abundance. Let's start with who is supposed to be our main man, Veck. Veck is a new Detective in the Caldwell PD. He is fighting his inner demons (literally) all the while fighting to stay away from, yet get closer to his new partner, Reilly. Veck was the none conventional tortured hero. The torture for Veck was not physical, it was living with the fact that his father was one of the most notorious serial killers ever. His crossroads was easy for Jim Heron to identify. And then onto Jim Heron. Oh Jim, I love him so much! He is the same smooth, tough, ass kicking angel that we've seen before with a little bit of softy thrown in. I have to say he is on my top ten favorite heros list. And finally Adrian. This guy is so fleshed out and open to us I feel like I can reach through the pages and hold him to make the hurt go away. And oh how I would love to.

The weakness in Envy, I felt had to be the heroine, Sophia Reilly. She seemed just like a card board cut out to me. Almost like, Ward could have put any heroine from any book into her spot, made her a cop and viola! You have Veck's lady. Poor Veck. I felt he deserved someone better. I never learned why Reilly became a cop. I was never convinced why, with the exception of that he was hot, she fell for Veck. And most of all, all though she was a police officer, who are just supposed to be automatically tough as nails characters, she was an unbelievably gullible push over. It was so easy for her to be convinced that Veck was a bad guy. At that point I lost all faith in and respect for Reilly. Stand by your man dammit!

Overall I was very satisfied with this new Fallen Angels installment. And once again I'm going to sulk and whine because I have to wait another year for the next one to come out. Lucky for us we were thrown a big bone as to who the next cross roads guy is. And isn't that little tid bit exciting. (less)

This one started strong, but then veered into angry and just plain weird territory with Adrian, Eddie, and Jim all having nervous breakdowns every five pages. I keep thinking - um, there are supposed to be at least four more books in the series right? I'm not sure what Ward is going to do with the rest of them because everyone seems to be losing their shit right here. Anyway to Envy, I really loved it, it seems to have struck a good balance, in Covet there was a lot of romance and in Crave there was a lot of UF, this one seems to have struck the balance between the two. It manages to move the main plot with Jim et al on, with a few really shocking twists, seriously this book needs a Kleenex warning, but it also has a really great romance in it as well.

Veck, if you are up to date on Black Dagger Brotherhood then you will recognize him from Lover Unleashed, if you don't then you need to read it IMMEDIATLEY! I really liked him, he is the typical JR Ward male, tough and protective with a dark edge and she had me lapping him up (ha! If only!) And Sophia Reilly I really liked her as well, I liked that although she was a tough Internal Affairs agent who took no BS, she was also feminine and I loved hearing he pervy thoughts about Veck, I was reading some of those comments thinking "I am sure I have posted something similar to that on Good Reads!" She was my kind of girl!

What I also like about this series is Devina, I love that I hate her, she is a bad guy that you can get properly riled up about, she isn't half assed about being evil she goes all the way and not only that she poses a credible threat. There is nothing more off putting then a bad guy that can be defeated by your 5 year old nephew with a big stick, Devina isn't one of those!

Another great instalment in the series and my favourite so far and I really can't wait to see what happens next, roll on the next book

4.5 stars! I really enjoyed this installment in the Fallen Angels series! I absolutely LOVED Veck and Reilly. They were attracted to each other from the get-go and didn't fight that attraction...they just went with it. Of course, there's always a hurdle to get over, and they had a big one (or rather, Reilly, did), but it all worked out in the end, and they were just the sweetest frickin' couple. Loved the epilogue.

Ab-so-lutely LOVED it. I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I'm in love...
Jim has me heart and soul.

Big, Badass and Tattooed on the outside, but Good and Kind and Angelicly-hot on the inside.... like an Armadillo, only 6'4" and useful... and hot! Wa-hey!!

Definitely like the crossover with the BDB - not sure which Brother it was passed 'Vec in the hospital hallway, but will have to go back and try to check now.

This is the third books in the Fallen Angels series. Probably the last one I am going to read. I have not been convinced that this series is something for me. The concept with seven sins and fallen angels and a female demon is not very interesting or creative. I am a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by the same author. FA is not in the same league as BDB.

Jim Heron está incumbido da inglória tarefa de salvar 7 almas e assim derrotar o "demónio de saias" que é Devina.
Neste terceiro volume da saga "Anjos Caídos" Jim tem de salvar DelVecchio, o filho de um famoso psicopata, de seguir as pisadas do seu pai.
O título "Inveja" parece-me muito bem escolhido. Ao longo de todo o livro vemos Devina conseguir quase tudo aquilo a que se propõe, menos uma coisa: amar e ser amada. Usando de várias artimanhas e maldades Devina tenta conquistar Jim Heron mas sem sucesso. Com ciúmes de Heron, Devina sacrifica a sua protegida, Sissy Barten. (Ninguém lhe deve ter explicado que não é com vinagre que se apanham moscas!!) É também movida pela inveja que se empenha em tentar com que Veck mate a sua amada.
Não simpatizei muito com Reilly quando ela desconfiou de Veck, afinal ela preferia confiar nas palavras de outra pessoa do que nas do namorado. Mas acredito que com isso a autora pretendia demonstrar que existe sempre algum preconceito no que diz respeito ao velho ditado "quem sai aos seus não degenera". Além disso, como saga que relata os pecados humanos, há que demonstrar que ninguém é perfeito e todos erram.
A autora soube incorporar com bastante elegância cenas realmente sensuais. Numa época em que os livros começam a vender cada vez mais sexo, J.R. Ward mostra que é possível fazê-lo sem cair na vulgaridade de cenas demasiado explicitas deixando ao leitor um pouco para a imaginação.
Achei bastante pedagógico a parte em que Devina admite que faz terapia com uma psicóloga. E confesso que me ri bastante ao imaginar Devina recostada numa poltrona a relatar as suas maldades e fraquezas e a ser admoestada pela psicóloga.
Não sei o que se passou nos livros anteriores mas neste é bem visível a fragilidade da vida dos anjos. Apesar dos seus poderes, Eddie acaba por sucumbir. E Adrian tem de lidar com a dolorosa perda do seu inseparável parceiro.
Como não li os primeiros dois volumes desta série foi um pouco difícil para mim perceber o complexo enredo criado pela autora. Com vários planos de acção, diversificadas personagens e um romance empolgante, Ward conseguiu criar um livro que agarra os leitores.(less)

Sigh... I don't mean to reflect poorly on the author but I really can't tell if my dislike is because I dislike the convenient series crossovers she swore would never happen, or her writing. Actually, if I really think about it, it may be both. In this book the war between good and evil continues and once again Jim & company face off against Devina.

I had originally rated this a 3, and then when I got ready to write my review using my "the good, the bad and the ugly" points, I couldn't really...more Sigh... I don't mean to reflect poorly on the author but I really can't tell if my dislike is because I dislike the convenient series crossovers she swore would never happen, or her writing. Actually, if I really think about it, it may be both. In this book the war between good and evil continues and once again Jim & company face off against Devina.

I had originally rated this a 3, and then when I got ready to write my review using my "the good, the bad and the ugly" points, I couldn't really think of any "good" points. I thought of a lot of ok points but nothing good, so I dropped the rating to reflect that.

In this book Jim continues with his Cissy obsession, which I still find creepy. His possessiveness bounces between fatherly and lover and it really weirds me out. Even as he declares her as "mine" it doesn't seem sexual, although he wants it to be and not to be at the same time. It's all very complex and creepy.

Also, this books confirms the relationship of two of the archangels- they are men and the nature of their relationship has been questioned since the first book. However, the whole thing leaves me feeling grumpy because JRW has proven that she doesn't seem to want to really push the boundaries into a mainstream book with a m/m relationship so I know that this little glimpse is as much as we will get... On the other hand she has been pushing the edge with threesome scenes. Now in both the last BDB book and this FA book there has been a m/f/m threesome, although this one did actually include sexual play between the two men. This leads to yet another potential romance between two men. And while I read more than my share of m/m romance, both relationships feel like she's trying to prove something to people that don't believe in her commitment to the now infamous couple in the BDB. It's like she's trying to prove she's not afraid to write it and it just feels like someone trying too hard. Plus, for me, the more I read the more I felt annoyed that I'm reading about 2 men in this series where I don't really care about the characters (although I do like Eddie and Adrian), instead of the 2 boys I've invested years in in the BDB books!

This book also marks a continuing storyline crossover from her last BDB book. I was frustrated because the DelVecchio parts in BDB were out of place. It introduced and focused on a character that we will likely never again see in those books. In turn it also introduced vampires into the FA series and I think what irked me more is that it wasn't really dealt with. The fact that his memory was wiped by a vampire, or the fact that they exist at all. It initially seemed like it was going to be a big thing, but that fizzled into nothing.

Overall, I can say I was previously enjoying this series, but now I'm not so certain. And I definitely don't feel obligated to continue, unless I'm manipulated into it by more crossover.(less)

Oh, how I love those angels. (Sigh) If you have read any of the previous books in this series you know that it's about good vs. evil. Literally. Jim and his boys are trying to figure out who the next soul is going to be. No one wants to tell them and I don’t think it's fair that Devina gets a head start by always knowing who the person is. Ugh! Good news is that Jim find a way and sets out to find this person. I don’t agree with the method since its playing with the devil, but my boy has to do what he has to do in order to win. So, who is our next soul? It’s the new detective in Caldwell PD, Thomas “Veck” DelVecchio, Jr.! You might remember him from Lover Unleashed. He has a little snippet there. Did I mention he's hot too? I know some people disliked the way that J.R. Ward crossed some of the characters from BDB to The Fallen Angels series. Well, me personally, I thought it was brilliant. I am in love with both series and I just can't seem to get enough of both of them. Plus, who doesn’t like to read about The Brothers in between our long year breaks? I know I do. I totally recommend Envy and if you haven't started reading this series, I strongly recommend you do so, like now.(less)

This book had so much of what I love about JR Ward’s books. I like how she writes male protagonists and their interactions with each other. I did feel it was too long, I ended up skimming some parts and felt I did not miss anything. Normally I really enjoy different points of view, Wards seems to do this well in her BDB series but the switches from Nigel, to Colin, to Sophia, to Veck and back and forth seemed to be done in a choppy way that it was really frustrating. So a definite weak point. Everything Ward fans love is in this book. I see this book as very different than the first two in this series (each which were different from each other in my opinion), this book appeared to be an attempt to capture Ward’s successful Black Dagger Brotherhood feel and bring it to this series. At first for me, this read was just good fun. The romance was good, the passion was good, the characters are interesting. But too much was like the BDB series and it was such a departure from the first two books in this series that it just seemed well like a copy of BDB. The fights with the lesser …. er … I mean demons, well they read almost play by play like the fights with the lesser – and how the demons are ultimate destroyed? Just seems way to close to killing lesser. The angels Eddie and Ad could fit right in with the BDB – similar clothing, similar language, similar age (i.e. ancient), similar method of traveling (flashing/dematerializing to places), partying hard, drinking hard, sharing women in bathrooms – wait these are angels right? I have no problem with angels – fallen angels – having fun. But there was one scene in this book (view spoiler) Again, I have no problem with sex scenes, I have no problem if they are not forwarding the plot but this, this was just bizarre in the sense that the scene contradicted the nature of who these men are? It felt like I was reading a scene between Blay and Quinn or any other brothers. Another area in which I felt that Ward was incorporating her BDB world, Colin and Nigel used similar language as to the older vamps in BDB. Just too much cross over. I love the guilty fun of BDB and I will continue reading all the BDB books she puts out, but this seemed to me to be an attempt to capture her fan base and the popularity of BDB capitalizing on a few features she knows fans seem to really appreciate in the other series.

Yes, yes yes it was fun to *see* the sightings of the brothers and to have the partial cross over in story.

Wait one cotton pickin' minute, I check the Ward's site (just can't call her the Warden. Sorry) ALMOST DAILY looking for a release date, and this book wasn't even MENTIONED let alone having a release date.

I'm totally okay with it now. Of course, I burned an Audible credit on this earlier Ward book, The Rebel, which has NOTHING to do with the series but it was there, and I had the credits.

This was my favorite of the Fallen Angel series. I LOVED the small crossover with BDB, but mostly , I loved Veck. This has not been my favorite series, but I still enjoy it. I must say though, I'm not looking forward to the next book dealing with Matthias again. Strangely, I just can't remember the last book with him in it, and I know I didn't love it enough to read it a second time to get myself caught up. My favorite of the series thus far. J.R. Wards attention to detail always amazes me. Everything she writes is relevant. Little moments, small scenes, character introductions etc, all have meaning and even if you don't know then, it will be woven into the story beautifully at a later time. I love her unique mythology and feel each of these books gets progressively better. I am quite immersed in Jim Herons character and look forward to him winning the war between good and evil.

Partendo dal presupposto che io seguo la santa Jessica in qualsiasi forma o editore, devo ammettere che ero partita prevenuta nei confronti degli Angeli. Prevenuta in senso buono, perché ero fiduciosa e convinta della buona riuscita della serie.
Il primo romanzo mi era piaciuto; forse era un pò confusionario, incompleto, ma la sensazione finale era stata decisamente positiva. Il secondo mi era piaciuto molto grazie ai protagonisti, riuscitissimi, e alla loro storia. Il terzo mi è piaciuto terribilmente perché è un romanzo completo, complesso, che è riuscito a colmare le lacune dei precedenti e migliorare i difetti della serie.
Una volta superato lo scoglio iniziale del riabituarsi allo slang selvaggio della Ward - perché questa volta si è scatenata con slang e acronimi per ogni cosa! - la lettura prende un ritmo serrato.
La storia comincia in un momento particolare perché i fatti sono già avvenuti MA - attenzione - in un'altra serie! Ebbene sì! Il fattaccio si svolge all'interno di Lover Unleashed e il romanzo comincia proprio a sangue sparso e a vampiro che scompare. Se, però, qualcuno pensa che la BDB sconfini nella FA si sbaglia: solo alcuni personaggi viaggiano tra una serie ed un'altra.
Thomas 'Veck' Del Vecchio Jr. - un nome, un programma - è il detective che sostituisce Brian 'Butch' O'Neal e che diventa partner di De la Cruz (già visto e rivisto nella BDB). Veck è figlio d'arte, per così dire, perché il padre serial killer era stato arrestato per una serie di efferati omicidi e il nostro teme di seguire le orme del padre. Per capire il personaggio e tutta la storia bisogna chiarire che Veck ha sicuramente un lato oscuro che lo spinge ad agire con estrema violenza. Nel profondo è convinto di avere tutte le carte in regola per diventare un assassino.
Questo suo lato oscuro è il motivo per cui Veck diventa la terza anima in gioco tra Devina e Jim ed è il motivo trainante che genera ogni azione e interazione con altri personaggi. Contrapposta a Veck c'è Sophia Reilly, un'agente degli Affari Interni, incaricata di indagare su Veck e decidere se effettivamente è un pazzo assetato di sangue. I due si ritrovano a lavorare assieme - come espiazione - e naturalmente l'attrazione divampa. E' piacevole che sia Veck ad essere il primo a cedere, con molto candore, ai sentimenti: per lui non esiste attrazione fisica, perché considera il sesso come un'azione che non gli ha mai portato vero piacere, ma eisiste l'affinità emotiva. Reilly risplende di una luce pura, fatta di bontà, onestà e fiducia cose che lui sa di non possedere. Thomas è attratto da lei per ciò che rappresenta e sente di voler stare con lei perché crede che la sua influenza possa aiutarlo a non trasformarsi in un mostro. Come coppia sono ben assortiti: lui è scuro, dentro e fuori, mentre lei è chiara e pura.
Naturalmente non è la componente romantica la vera protagonista del libro: è la lotta tra bene e male, sia nella lotta tra angeli e demone, sia nella lotta privata di Veck tra oscurità, violenza e normalità. L'amore non è ciò che pesa sulla bilancia, ma è il libero arbitrio. E' Veck che deve decidere di fare la cosa giusta quando arriverà il momento di giocarsi l'anima.
Arriviamo, quindi, al vero nucleo della storia. Jim - quanto mi era mancato - Adrian ed Eddie continuano a combattere contro Devina. Il demone, che nel libro precedente aveva sviluppato un attaccamento eccessivo nei confronti di Jim, ora prova vera e propria attrazione. Lo vuole e desidera che lui si arrenda a lei: si lascia andare all'emotività, soffre quasi e, lo devo, ammettere un pò mi spiace che sia la cattiva. Mi intenerisce quando vede Jim e desidera disperatamente che lui ricambi i suoi sentimenti. Che ci posso fare? Devina mi piace, è una cattiva con stile.
Tuttavia preferisco ampiamente Jim - che adoro - Adrian, che mi ricorda tantissimo Qhuinn e Eddie. Non posso fare spoilers ma ci sarà un enorme, drammatico, cambiamento che riguarda uno di loro e che avrà conseguenze pesantissime. Superare un trauma del genere sarà decisivo per la guerra e anche per chi rimane. Non aggiungo altro.
Il ruolo di Jim, anche questa volta, è quello di aiutare l'anima in gioco a seguire la via del bene e contrastare l'operato di Devina. In un certo senso, Jim prende questo caso sul personale perché Veck e Reilly stanno indagando sulla sparizione di Sissy, l'anima della ragazza che Jim trova morta davanti allo specchio di Devina e che, successivamente, vedrà ogni volta che scenderà nell'Inferno. Per Jim diventa quasi un'ossessione, arriva persino a considerarla sua e persegue con mortale precisione l'obiettivo di trovare il responsabile e il modo per liberare la sua anima. Sono curiosa, morbosa quasi, di sapere se Sissy sarà solo un elemento nella storia di Jim o se sarà qualcosa di più. Non mi resta che aspettare.
Per quanto riguarda Adrian e Eddie non posso allargarmi molto, perché rischio veramente di spoilerare. Posso dire solamente che Adrian subisce un cambiamento radicale del suo carattere e che questo cambiamento è legato a Eddie. Ammetto di non aver ben capito che tipo di rapporto hanno questi due: a quanto pare non si fanno scrupoli a toccarsi tra di loro mentre fanno sesso con qualcuno ma non ho percepito nessun tipo di passionalità esclusiva. Rimarrò al buio ancora per un bel pò e forse questo dubbio non verrà mai chiarito.
Per finire secondo me questo è il migliore della serie FA, il più complesso e ricco dove diversi elementi interagiscono tra di loro e dove ogni personaggio si muove fluidamente nella trama, senza stonare. Ogni componente equilibra la storia: dramma, amore, passione, azione. Tutto è collegato, tutto ha un senso, persino le comparse degli Arcangeli.
Il finale è decisamente inaspettato, perché riapre i giochi e mette in dubbio azioni già compiute. Fremo per leggere Rapture!(less)

After starting reading in this book, I couldn’t stop reading. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. This series is getting stronger and stronger with every book in it, is what I think. You can read the books separately without a problem, but when you haven’t read the other books in this series, just read them. I am sure you will like those too.

This one is my favorite so far. It was much more emotional and surprising. I really didn't know until the end who was going to win this one, and I liked that. And of course, the major explosive plot twist...well, I guess it isn't a twist as much as a total blindside. I liked this one a lot, and I would love to find Rapture but I think I'm going to have to do the Amazon thing since I haven't seen it around here yet.

What a ride! Ward’s writing style is direct and aggressive. Her characters are in your face, challenging you to deny their brash intensity. ENVY is the third book in Ward’s Fallen Angels series which follows Jim Heron in his fight to save souls on the verge of being eternally damned. Heron is pitted against the demon lord, Devina, an Angelina Jolie look alike who will break all the rules to make sure she wins this contest. Compared to the previous two books in the series, ENVY is simpler and easier to follow. Both Heron and Devina have gotten the hang of the contest and it is great fun to read the psychological battles between the two.

The mystery surrounding Veck and his role as the chosen soul is fairly clear and doesn’t leave the reader in the dark. The animal attraction between Veck and Reilly comes to life in some super smexy love scenes that may leave you hot and bothered so don’t say I didn’t tell you! Ward throws in a few doozies but there are two sub plots I could easily have done without (can’t tell you because they are spoilers). And you can always count on Ward to give you the anti-heroine heroine (her specialty) – Reilly doesn’t wear make-up and is utterly unaware how attractive she is. A paragon of tighty whitey efficiency - literally – she is brainy but she can’t understand what super hunky Veck even sees in her. While Veck is so steeped in guilt and repentance for the sins of his father, Reilly’s straight arrow good girl rocks his socks off and leaves him totally inept and hopelessly flummoxed.

Take this PNR to bed with you and don’t be surprised if you find yourself racing through the book to read the smexy parts!(less)

For those who don't know this series is based on the 7 cardinal sins with each side (good/bad or heaven/hell) getting what is basically a savior who has to either save a soul for the good of all mankind or force the soul to do something so damning that the future of mankind goes to hell (literally). Ward has given us Jim Heron who is the savior for team Heaven and has equally draw up a demon named Devina who all for team hell. Along the way the reader is privvy to how team heaven works towards preventing the ruination of mankind. We see glimpses of the Archangels Nigel and Colin who are like referees making sure that things are played as fairly as they can be, then we see the Savior who is teamed on earth with Adrian and Ed to make sure he finds the soul and pieces together the challenge to the soul and gently nudges them in the right direction. Neither team is supposed to cheat outrageously because at the end of the day the soul in question must make their own decision.

The first two books in the series were not as enjoyable as say... I don't know the BDB series. I did not really care about what happened to the H/H and Jim Heron came off as a bummy type of loser who just hit the "Oh Shit" jackpot of having to carry god's jockstrap in to battle. BUT with Envy, you can clearly route for Jim who has found his mack-daddiness. Adrian and Eddie who are doing their level best to bring a win home with an angel who is pretty new at this thing. Thomas DelVecchio the soul in question and Sophia Reilly his partner on the police force who happens to be the heroine. You also are given a full on glimpse of the makings of team Heaven and how even though they are angels, they have very human frailties and engage in some behavior that, if I am reading it right, is not what is sanctioned by the church. The other plus is Devina the Demon who can do bad all by herself but who has a crush on Jim Heron and is hysterically funny when she pouts because she doesn't get her way. I like a good bad guy or girl and she is pretty out there. In the BDB we had Lash and the Lesser well Ms. Devina holds it down very strongly. She is pure evil incarnate with a touch of Dave Letterman.

The other plus is that Ward seems to be driving her well loved BDB and this new series to a meeting point at some time in the future. The hints of this are:
The black Escalade doing 100 on a rainy road (Butch and V anyone)?
The farmhouse garage rented to Jim by an old man in livery (I'm thinking this is Bellas old place and since she's with Zsadist it's unused)
The tall dude in leathers and shitkickers who stalks the hospital halls
The Angels mentioning that there is only one other being on the planet who could rip the throat out of someone; and
Lassiter who is on the BDB side of things and who needs his own darn book and what better way than to bridge the two

The one downside is the loss of someone in the story who is central (I think) to it's Team Heaven getting the upperhand. But unlike Jane and Wellsie, I hope that Ward will reward her loyal fans and not screw the return up with some ridiculous ressurection.

So we are on terra firma and I HOPE TO GOODNESS we stay there.
