At first I wasn't sure what to make of this book. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be humourous or thought-povoking. I suppose the answer is both. Although never outragiously funny, the syle in which the stories are written had a tendency to leave me with a smile. And at other times, they really made me question what life would be like hundreds of years from now, once alien contact has been made, once it is possible to live on another planet that is so far undiscovered, and once time travel is n...more
This book was kinda a 50% good and 50% bad book. Some of the short stories
were really funny, creative an very well written. The other fifty percent... Not very good. Some were just unnecessarily violent. After reading some of them, I really just asked myself, "Is that it? What was the point in that?". Some were really funny and pointless which is something that I enjoy but when it's not funny, overly violent, and completely pointless, it doesn't really make for a good short story. But, like I s...more

The book, Selected Shorts and other Methods of time Travel, can be viewed as a series of disconnected short stories seemingly dealing with the fall-out of some futuristic ability to travel to the past, thus reconstructing the present. Italicized, single-page inserts seem to have little to no connection to the stories themselves, until one views the book, not as a series of short stories, but rather, in the mode of Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles, a novel commenting on the destruction of the very f...more
Selected Shorts and Other Methods of Time Travel had me confused most of the time. I would get into a story and it would just drop off with no real ending or closing. I really enjoyed the way the stories were written and I enjoyed the mini-stories between each short more than the actual short stories.
I’m still boggled as to what I should get from reading this book. Each story was a bit odd and some had that dry sense of humor. But, by the end of each I was thoroughly confused and constantly re-a...more

This collection of whimsical and fanciful tales was a delight to read. Albeit a slightly confusing delight. It seemed a bit quixotic in nature, if not random in enterprise. Some of the tales did not seem to be on time travel, of which the title foretold it would be. And the random little quips between each short story seemed more pointed at an ADD or easily distracted crowd... an amusing endeavor at best. Nevertheless, there was nary a moment that wasn...more

Review based on ARC.
This is David Goodberg's debut and a collection of shorts. I almost hesitate to put that in the beginning of the review because a lot of people avoid short story collections. However, if you like time-travel and a wry sense of humor, read it! It was a thoroughly enjoyable collection. Again, I was grateful to follow a bit of a drag-read (Rut - see my blog, tometombfidelity.blogspot.com, for review) with something so full of life, recharging my reading-stamina.

Selected Shorts and Other Methods of Time Travel is a collection of stories that Goodberg has written which seem to either try to drive home a message or simply tell a story. Most of these stories take place in the future or with people from the future and we see that very little has changed with the human race in the centuries in the future.
Honestly, I found this book was not what I expected. It was as if Goodberg had decided that some important messages needed to be said and he would put them...more

I got this from the first-reads giveaway:
I'm generally not the biggest fan of short stories, but the cute image on the cover mixed with the time traveling theme piqued my interest. I'm glad to announce that for short stories this is a really solid read.
All the stories in this book existed in a future where time travel is possible and commercialized. Ranging from one page super shorts to 20-30 stories, David Goodberg tackles all sorts of interesting subjects. Although, I must admit, there were a...more

The old cliche goes "Never judge a book by its cover," but to truly appreciate what the author is going for, one must begin by considering that very object.
While the primary coloring on the dust jacket is blue, the edges and other small "flaws" are tan, giving the book a retro, frequently read, appearance. Quiet wisely as David Goodberg is attempting to evoke the classic science-fiction anthologies of the 50s and 60s by authors like Ray Bradbury...more

Review:
Selected Shorts and Other Methods of Time Travel was, at times, very confusing. By the end of each story, I was thoroughly boggled. But I also have realized, after finishing it, that the boggling nature of virtually the entire collection of stories is what makes it so effective. Most of the stories are pretty pointless, but usually only at first glance; when I first started reading it, I have to admit that I honestly didn't get the point. I also didn't understand how it was, exactly, "tho...more

I had mixed feelings about this book. There were a couple of stories that I really liked. They were amusing, the characters were interesting and engaging and they were either thought provoking or funny. But a lot of the others kind of fell flat for me. At the end of the book I came away thinking my favorite thing about the book was the illustrations (which are amazing).

An ADD afflicted person's dream come true! I loved this book from the very beginning. Following a two chapter introduction to the commercial side of time travel are many short stories interspersed with either thought provoking or humorous anecdotes of a single page in length. From cover to cover this book is bound to at least bring a smile about. The very few stories that aren't amusing are insightful to the human psyche despite the fictional setting.[return][return]At the very least a very wort...more
I received an advanced copy and really enjoyed this book. Many themes overlapp with what has already been discovered through past science fiction, but this book has a lot of new ideas too. While a collection of short stories, they are all connected in some way by the overall context of commercial tiem travel, which is a nice touch and not seen that often. There is an amazing cartoon at the opening of each story which adds to the experience. This book was a quick read mainly because I enjoyed it...more
I absolutely ADORED this book!
First off, I am a fan of short stories. I love being able to read something, put it down, and come back to it again without having to remember where I left off. And David Goodberg writes each story with such flow and humor, that you find you can't wait to see what story comes next.
Now, let me tell you right now: that you do NOT need to be a sci-fi fan, or a time -traveling fan to love this book. Does it help? Absolutely. But each story is so good all on it's own, th...more

Three words to describe this book: completely, awesomely random. You get exactly what you are expecting when you pick this one up, short stories dealing with time travel. The stories were great, the imagination of the author fantastic, and most of the characters were extremely loveable (which is hard to say about most books). I especially enjoyed how between the short stories, Goodberg inserted random thoughts and ideas (ideas I could totally see myself having at any given moment). My absolutely...more
For our reading enjoyment--and contemplation--author David Goodberg presents three dozen short tales from the age following the Worlds War of 2267. Time travel has become commercially available and, as with most technologies, mankind has found various methods of exploitation, misuse, and ....... well, if there's a loophole in the rules, you can just bet that someone will find it and stretch it to the breaking point. With temporal paradox as that loophole, be ready for some serious reality evasio...more

This was an excellent book. I love anything that has to do with time travel and the stories were short. A lot of them were just a few pages. Some had to deal with the past, some with the present and some with the future. And each story seemed to present some kind of lesson or something you needed to think about further.
A couple of my favorites were a person who went back in time to see the earth in the past before it was destroyed and landed on Main Street USA in Disney. And another with someon...more

I received a free copy from the author. I found some stories much like the ones I read in my high school's creative writing class, some were like my college sci-fiction creative class and others completely different than I had read before. The author does a good job of describing what time travel would be like and what people experience. Some of the actual experiences of the people leave you wanting more information or just trying to figure out exactly what the author's point was. He does attemp...more
This was a very fun, layered book. Seemingly simple stories that hold hidden questions and meanings that is very enjoyable - easily overlooked by people who claim not to "get it." While there is a lack of character development, these short stories rather explore scenarios and questions daily formailities, with bizarre twists, of course. I'm a sucker for silly sci-fi and this was a perfict fit.
Fun book. 80% of the characters are male but that's OK since this is pretty much a book of misfurtunes due to curruption and greed. Some funny bits and very enjoyable. I love young adult and this fits somewhere between a YA book and something adult. Some of the stories bring up some very interesting questions (or philosophy about lfie - whichever you decide they are).
I won this as a first-read and have since passed the book along to friends who I think may find more of a connection than I did. Overall, I was stumped. I did not get the majority of the humor. I was mostly left with a confused feeling, as though I were missing the punch lines. I also did not get many of the one liners spaced in the book. The parts I feel I understood were just not that funny as well, with more of preachy tone than actual humor, though admittedly I have a darker sense of humor t...more

Like most short story collections, this was mostly hit and miss but nothing is really BAD. The humor throughout makes it a bit more enjoyable. Even if you don't enjoy the stories too much you at least get a good laugh here and there. Goodberg is good with humor and I liked his take on time travel. I'd actually be interested in seeing him to a novel or at least a novella. Give his ideas room to grow and be a bit more substantial.

While there's some great ideas in the stories, that's what they seem like - just ideas. There's no real characters backing up any of the book, and that's truly important, especially in the more grotesque stories. Granted, it's hard to have a solid character in a two or three page story, but there's no reason that there can't be more to the characters in the longer stories.

This was an amazing book for all ages my 13 year old brother had fun reading all the short stories and the great art throughout. What makes the short stories great is they can take it to school and during the times they read in class they can fully enjoy a story and once done with that story they always have more to look forward to. This is a must for any parent looking to get an awesome, interesting and humorous for there children.
I received a review-copy of this book via the 'First Reads' contest. The book is a collection of short stories all related to time travel. The stories are cute and quirky and are all accompanied by a nifty little illustration. The writing reminds me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The book came with a letter from the author as well as a magnet that my daughter keeps begging me for :) I enjoyed these fun tales, and would recommend them to anyone looking for a fun, light read.
just won this as a first read!!! received in the mail with a cute little magnet to boot :)
the stories are creative and fun to read...and they all make u stop and think for a quick sec. (id liken them to fables but alas after many of them i was at a loss for what message the author may have been trying to deliver)
the 'shorts' were never really tied together come the final pgs...and the author imo tried to bring in his chicago ties a few too many times
