When Skip wakes up next to a naked man, his first impulse is to kick the stranger out as quickly as possible, especially when the stranger wants to stay and get to know him better. It turns out that the previous night was Wildman's first experience with a mood patch, and Skip treats his affectionate advances with cynicism, believing them to be nothing more than the afteref...more

This short story has been brought to you by Insta-Love™, the erotic enhancement patch guaranteed to improve your sex life or your money back. Disclaimer: Erections lasting longer than four hours…

Noooo, that’s not what really happens in the story, but there is a ring of truth to it. Insta-Love takes place in a socially and emotionally dysfunctional setting, in a future that, sadly, seems all too near. It is a place where the norm is to function in a chemically and surgically enhanced e...more

Well written SF story with themes of looking below the surface to find love. Although it's short there's a lot packed into it in terms of setting up a world where how you look is more important than your personality, and emotions can be bought in little patches and attached to the skin.

I liked Skip and great deal, especially the way his bewilderment turned to outright panic when Wildman wanted to stay and starts to show him some affection not brought on by the mood patches. I also liked how, eve...more

When I read the blurb for this short little story, I expected something rather light and frothy, however I got so much more than that. I hope that doesn’t sound dismissive of the story, however the blurb doesn’t do it justice and it’s not often that 15 pages makes my heart break a little for one of the characters, really leaving an impression on me.

The setting is somewhere, sometime in the future and there’s not a huge amount of world building and info dumps, thankfully, but little bits and piec...more

This short story by Josephine Myles is quite the little gem. I've had it in my TBR pile for a while now and, needing a break from a rather angsty and long novel, decided to read it. What I found was a well written an unique story. It could have gotten bogged down in world-building, but like a good paranormal/sci-fi, allowed the reader to put the world together themselves with the clues given, not with long pieces of exposition. I enjoyed it immensely. I would have loved to read more, but it work...more

This is a great sci-fi story about the effects of chemically induced emotions - or rather, what happens when a man who is used to them runs into someone who isn't. I loved how Skip was utterly distrustful of anything that he'd have to do without the help of a patch, but when the man he hooked up with at a club insists he try it "au naturel", Skip is pleasantly surprised. Very creative idea and setting.

Short stories are a tough business; the author has to get everything just right within a confines space. Insta-love is a lovely, sexy story with well defined, intriguing characters. However, what I like most about it is the little glimpses we get of their fictional world. They spike my curiosity, I want to see more!

This was a cute short story, set in the future (i think) where poor Skip believes he can only really experience things through chemical enhancements.
He meets Wildman who shows him, he can live and feel without the "helpful" patches.
It's an upbeat story with a very nice HFN ending.

Fantastic premise, and a great story. I love how the author has taken a common criticism of romance stories and turned it into a great bit of dystopian sci-fi - all the more resonant, because you can see it happening in the not-too-distant future.
Definitely recommended.

I absolutely love the concept of this story.
It's very intriguing.

I only wish it was longer and went a little more in depth. or perhaps... I hope there is a sequel or another story in this world. :DD

An OK short about a guy who needs chemical patches to have a good time and has a small crisis about what to do without them after hooking up with a guy who prefers it au natural.

I really enjoyed this little story. It was cute and the sci-fi aspect was interesting.

English through and through, Josephine Myles is addicted to tea and busy cultivating a reputation for eccentricity. She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. She blames her rebellious muse but he never listens to her anyway, no matter how much she threatens him with a big stick. She's beginning to suspe...more
