by
Ed McBain
He appeared to be a decent, upright, honest citizen....
And yet appearances can be more than deceiving in the world of blackmail and extortion. The shocking gangland-style murder of known blackmailer Sy Kramer begs the question: which of Kramer's marks had given him his very last payoff? A politician's beautiful wife with a deadly secret? Awhile ago my friend asked me to recommend some good mystery series that take place in New York. Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series was the first thing that popped into my mind. While the series takes place in a fictional city called "Isola," it's New York City through and through. McBain essentially rotated a map of Manhattan, the outer boroughs, Long Island, and New Jersey 90 degrees and renamed everything. If you're familiar with New York, you'll immediately be able to identify each p...more
This is a solid story, but Evan Hunter was running into editorial interference with the 5th book, before the series really took off. Cotton Hawes was introduced "because a married cop can't be a hero" (such a brilliant editor). This threw the dynamic off a little bit and in Killer's Payoff Cotton really comes of as a PI rather than a cop, and this affected McBain's prose as well and the story had a PI feel rather than the usual police procedural of the series. #6 in the 87th Precinct series, set in fictional Isola, modeled after New York. Classic "cop fiction" with the boys from the 87th trying to track down the murderer of a blackmailer/extortionist who was mowed down gangland style in the street. Or maybe it wasn't one of Sy's "clients" at all--maybe it wa...more
McBain's 87th precinct stories just fascinate me. The characters grow from book to book. This is Cotton Hawes' second book as the hero, but enough of the other characters appear to keep them intersting.
Very Good; Police of the 87th precinct try to unravel the murder of a blackmailer.
Blackmail, extortion, and murder.
I've read a few of the 87th Precinct titles and this one is probably the best, thus far. Cotton Hawes is a good addition to the squad. The murder plot takes a twist at the end. Great dialogue.
