this book is fine. it is another one of those secret history knockoffs i can't seem to get enough of, even though they are usually underwhelming.
this is a multi-perspective novel, where a bunch of characters are allowed to discover different elements of the background story of a young rich girl found murrrrrderrrrred in her boarding-school dorm room, where she has recently given birth to a secret baby. but where is the baby?? who's its daddy? how did she die? what dark secrets does More...

Claire Harkness was a girl with many advantages. She was beautiful, smart, wealthy, and powerful. She was a leader among her peers at prestigious Armtiage Academy. Yet none of these advantages saved her life. Now, former Armitage student, Matt Corelli, is assigned to find not only Claire's killer, but also her missing newborn baby.

Charlotte Bacon's The Twisted Thread started out so strong for me. The story of a popular teen girl found dead in her room at the prestigious Armitage boarding school, and the mystery of how she died and who took her newborn baby had so much potential, with writing that was so perceptive, such as this:
"Being responsible for the transmission of American literature to four classes of intelligent, slouching adolescents sometimes struck Madeline as a task more ludicrous than ending depende More...

At Armitage, a high school for the extremely wealthy and privileged, a murder has just taken place. It seems that one of the most popular and influential students, Claire Harkness, has been found dead in her dormitory and there are no obvious suspects. But that’s not even the half of it, for when Claire’s body is discovered, it soon becomes apparent that she had given birth just a few days prior to the murder. In addition to having kept her pregnancy a secret in the close boarding school atmosph

Madeline Christopher has landed a job at Armitage Academy. Armitage is a prestigious school with many traditions but some of the traditions are not common knowledge among the faculty. When Claire Harkness is found dead in her dorm room, the investigation brings some of these secret traditions to light.
Madeline is one of the first to view Claire’s body and was shocked that it appeared that Claire might have just given birth. Madeline’s intuitions turn out to be accurate but the baby More...

I haven't read a good murder mystery in a while, so this was definitely intriguing reading. Bacon does a fantastic job of creating believable characters, both within Armitage Academy, and in the surrounding area. Prestige is a recurring theme throughout, and the idea of being privileged allows for some very interesting twists. Bacon was able to create teenage characters seen through the point of view of adults that actually made sense. The difference in dialogue between the young characters and

A fancy private school. A student murdered. We jump into this mystery through the character of Madeline, a first year teacher at Armitage Academy in New England. Her relationship with the deceased Claire, an aloof senior, was shallow enough that she has no idea of what could've possibly happened - and she's not the only one that's anxious to know how and why a privileged and brilliant girl could end up dead in her dorm room.

The Twisted Thread was like reading the AMC's The Killing without commercial interruptions or cliff hangers. Oh, and not as well written. Instead of constantly asking who killed Rosie Larsen, it was who killed Claire Harkness and to make it a bit different, who took her baby. And add to that how did she manage to hide her pregnancy in the first place?

Armitage Academy is a boarding school for the privileged. Madeline Christopher is an intern at the school when Claire Harkness is found dead in her dorm room close to the end of the school year. Madeline is drawn into the investigation by the two groups of Claire’s friends, the privileged and those who are in the school on scholarship. As the adults in the school begin to realize that the students knew and cared for a pregnant Claire that the adults were unaware of the search for who murdered

Yeah, I liked this book. You know, for the most part. Part of me had some flashbacks of another book dealing with the upper class and a horrific event, which I didn't enjoy. Yet overall, this book was a fun, quick read. The author added many twists - some that I saw coming and others that shocked me well after I read them - which did a good job at keeping the story moving along.

Who killed Claire Harkness, and where is her baby?
When Armitage Academy’s most popular senior is found dead in her dorm room, everyone is surprised to learn that she had recently given birth. Well, almost everyone is surprised. It turns out that Claire had confided in a few students, but no one seems to have any idea who would want her dead and who would take her baby.

I borrowed this ARC from a friend because the synopsis sounded like the type of book I used to read a lot of. A good murder mystery used to be on top of every list I had, but I've gravitated away from that in recent years. This one particularly intrigued me because of the exclusivity of the wealthy school and people involved. You know there's going to be a lot of good "behind-the-scene" information from that alone. It's often fascinating reading about the rich, as many of us aspire to having more and we just presume that the rich are so much better off in their elite society. A little slice of life with insight into the elite presented in THE TWISTED THREAD begs to differ. We see into the world of privileged children attending a mythical boarding school, Armitage Academy, in New England. The reader is introduced to Claire Harkness and she remains a character throughout the book even though she has been mur

I was a little cautious when I started this book. Mystery/crime novels are always hard for me to get into, and I loose interesting in them quickly.
However, I was completely drawn into this book and the different stories Bacon was able to create and weave together. I found myself reading and rereading pages, just to make sure I was getting everything she wrote, all the hints she left for people to pick up on. I was pulling out my hair (figuratively) wanting to know what had truly happen More...

The Twisted Thread offers promising snippets for a murder mystery wrought with scandal but fails to serve up the excitement and suspense that most readers seek from the genre. Barrages of characters are introduced in the beginning and keep on coming. Details are given in a redundant fashion, which only adds to the confusion of mentally managing characters. Each character comes with a background and appears to have equal weight and importance, which can be a unique writing struc More...

For a story about scandal and the violent death of a young girl, there's something curiously dispassionate and distant about The Twisted Thread - and I believe that this is entirely intentional.
Charlotte Bacon's novel begins with the discovery of a dead girl on the campus of an exclusive private school for high-school age children. Even the description of the body, half-naked and twisted at an unnatural angle, is weirdly clinical, taking the time to philosophize on the American tendenc More...

Wow, if this is what private exclusive boarding schools are like, I am glad I went to a regular public high school! Good mystery-coed with secret birth-baby missing, mother dead and that's the beginning of the novel. This is the mystery that the story centers around, but plenty of other mysteries crop up throughout the book. The story certainly kept my interest although, it was a little bit of an adjustment to jump from one point of view to another. I read many young adult books and had to

An exclusive preppy boarding school nestled just outside of Greenville in New England, Armitage is home to the privileged and those of intellectual and social prestige. It is certainly not accustomed to scandal and murder investigations. However, when beautiful Claire Harkness is found dead 10 days before summer vacation, end of the year graduation and celebrations transform into inquisitions. Detective Matt Corelli came to Greenville in hopes of tranquility, leaving big city crime behind for a

Well-done first mystery featuring an elite boarding school (Milton, Andover, Groton) next to a working class town. One of the preppy girls turns up dead, with a missing baby. Shock ensues, with prepster-townie conflict and a delightful detective duo (one working class vegan, one former prepster), plus a charming intern / teacher and a few other minor characters. Hints of romance.

First of all, I liked the book and I loved the main character. I think the main problem I had with this book was the misplaced character development. There were such long spaces between the action parts while the author was trying to introduce the characters, I felt the sometimes the focus was on the wrong details and it left me hanging and wanting to skim, and I don't typically like doing that. I feel as though some of the details about how the detective likes his coffee probably could have

This novel by Charlotte Bacon took me on a ride through a murder-mystery on the grounds of privileged boarding school, where not even looks and money can keep you from being murdered. Her cast of characters help lead the story through its paces and although you sort of get a little whiff of the true culpret, she still manages to throw in a few red herrings to throw you off the scent.

Armitage Academy is a school for the wealthy; a school where reputation is everything. It is also a school full of secrets. The story revolves around the death of Claire Harkness and her missing baby. While I did enjoy “The Twisted Thread”, I found myself often struggling to get through it. One issue was that the story switches point of views so frequently that after a while, it becomes tiring. Claire Harkness, Armitage Academy’s most popular senior, managed to hide a pregnancy, delivering a bab

If you love books featuring boarding schools then here’s a perfect twist to THE TWISTED THREAD: it’s from the viewpoint of the faculty and staff, instead of the students. THE TWISTED THREAD is an atmospheric and enthralling mystery that grabbed me from the first chapter.

The Twisted Thread is not one of my typical reads. Instead, it is an adult murder mystery that intrigued me when I first read the description of it. I decided to request it from the publisher after seeing an ad in a Shelf Awareness newsletter. I was glad I did. As it turns out, I do like a good mystery every now and again.

First Thoughts after finishing book: hmmm.....not sure what to think of this one.
What I liked about this book:
The setting...I like the idea of a twisted love story, murder, and cover-up that takes place on a boarding school campus. Don't know why...I must be twisted!
The cop who actually went to the boarding school there on a scholarship. I thought his inside knowledge of how the school ticked made the story interesting.
