Afterlife (Knights of the Board Room #4)
by
Joey W. Hill
Part of the Knights of the Board Room series. Rachel gave up seeking a Master years ago. After a failed marriage and terrible tragedy, she's walled her soul against going down that dangerous path again. Then Jon joins her yoga class. He's thirteen years younger than she, but his Dominant nature threatens her shields from the moment she recognizes it. Not only does he under...more

I’m gonna say it straightforward. Afterlife is down to a one-star rating for a non-consensual sex scene. Without this particular scene it would have been a 3.5 star rating. My review doesn’t reflect how well the story is written. It reflects my opinion and my issues.
“You know that place of utter stillness, the one you find in meditation?” When she managed a jerky nod, he continued. “It’s a place where you’ve let everything that burdens your mind free. All those thoughts, good or bad, peaceful or...more

I don’t usually read a lot of BDSM as I don’t like the hardcore stuff and end up abandoning the book. I usually check out reviews first before deciding to go ahead and read. I was a little worried about this one, but I really enjoyed it despite the fact there were a few things that I was uncomfortable with.
Jon was a Dom and was well known at his club. He admitted that he wasn’t usually hardcore but he would be so as and when he thought necessary. He loved Rachel and believed that those methods w...more

This is an emotional rollercoaster of a story, of course most of Joey's books are. I have looked forward to each book in this series. Excited about these wonderful men finally finding their happily ever after. It would so nice if there were more men like this in the world. There is something intriguing and wonderful about a man that wants to protect and cherish the woman he loves, to give her what she needs even when she might not realize what it is that she is longing for. I was so angry at Col...more

If you're looking for powerful, emotionally engaging characters then pick up any book by Joey W.Hill - you won't be disappointed.
Her Knights of the Boardroom series is published by Ellora's Cave so this is erotic romance with heavy BDSM elements woven into the storyline and sex scenes, but they are by no means gratuitous. All the elements are essential parts of the story and every scene moves the plot forward or shows character development. Be warned though - the scenes are fan-your-face-hot. Wo...more

Oooh child... Who knew Jon was such a badass? Our Yoga lovin' inventor is actually pretty hardcore. I think it's because he is so damn calm that to me, he came across as the most self-assured and confident. You know what they say...it's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for.
So um yeah, Hill is definitely progressing the series with each installment. This is the most graphic and hardcore I have ever read from Hill. However, that's not to say it was all just sloppy, jammed sex scenes wi...more

Again - not a recommendation for most of my sweet reading GR friends, but if you like A LOT of kink in your sex (of the D/s and BDSM variety) you should give this series a try. It has a great storyline with characters that stick with you well after reading it!

I have been looking forward to Jon's book, I wanted to see just what new and crazy inventions he would come up with to woo his woman and he sure came up with some great ones.
I found Rachael to be intriguing and liked her background. Since she was so young and innocent I am sure that dominance and submission never entered her mind, yet it was what she needed. I liked how she was honest with her husband and tried to get him to give her what she needed. Too bad he was such a bastard that all he did...more

Having read one or two others by Joey Hill which I enjoyed but did not make me rush to read any of her others - I have missed out.
This book kept me up to the early hours to try and finish (until the battery on the IPAD ran out and forced me to try and sleep).
This story tore at my heart and made in cry in places. For the first time in a while identified with the heroine and felt every thing she was feeling, making me tense with page turns willing her and Jon to evolve. I really enjoyed Joey's wri...more

This book is in a different class than so many of the erotica books that are out there. I really enjoyed it. I liked that aspect of the book that underlines how important it is for people to know who they are, accept who they are, and fulfill their potential to the best of their ability. I have no idea how our society got so balled up that we can't see all our fundamental drives as just that, fundamental. One is not any more or less important than the other. The drive to eat is no...more

Afterlife is one the fourth book in The Knights of the Boardroom and is my favorite book in that series, actually one of my overall favorite Joey W Hill books.
This is an erotic story of a 40+ year old woman being pursued by a man more than a decade younger than her. While part of the novel tells Rachel's struggle with being an older woman starting a relationship with a younger man, another part of this story simply becomes tells about woman awakening to her sexuality and the man who helps her m...more

If you are a believer that the characteristics of "relentless" and "calm control" are mutually exclusive, you are about to learn something new.
Jon Forte, Kensington and Associates negotiator and Dominant Inventor-on-the-side, had me squirming, I have to admit. I wanted to see a break that calm; to hear a spike in the cadence of his "oooohhhhmms"; to say, "would you just yell, already?". "Watching" Jon was personally anxiety-inducing, like...being tied to a chair, or blindfolded, and wondering w...more

I presume you know what the book is about. I'm letting you know what I liked or disliked about it.
Oh, man! JWH is sensually diabolical. It's okay. I told her as much :) And I LIKE IT!
I recommend Knights of The Boardroom Series by Ms. Hill. It's fantastic to me because there are points in this series where I feel as though I'm the one that has been pushed beyond my comfort zone and much like the pleasure realized by Ms. Hills protagonists I realize it too in the joy of a great read!!!!!!!!! Confession time…I am reading this series totally out of order, but it isn’t causing problems. Hopefully though the reviews will come out in order. I read book one first (Board Resolution) and didn’t like it. So when I saw Hostile Takeover on Net Galley (book #5) I decided to give the series another try. After that I grabbed up book #2 in the anthology Unlaced, but then sped forward to book #4, Afterlife. So I still have the middle book, #3 to read before I can say I have read the entire series.

I have to confess, Jon has never been one of my favourite Knights. Ok, I know, you can gasp and virtual bitch slap all you want, but that was just my opinion.
I always pictured Jon as the soft and cuddly bear, the one who loved to hug trees and could levitate while meditating. And yes I have a mentally skewed perception of guys that do yoga and have their ying and yang firmly balanced – it wasn’t overly masculine in my mind…..however, I got a bit of a knuckle upside the head when I read Afte...more

These books aren't for the faint of heart. They are direct, sexual and not soft.
This is one of the Knights of the Board Room series books. The "Knights of the Boardroom" is a nickname given to the five-man executive team of K&A Associates. They are all Masters, trying to find the submissives of their dreams. These men all work together, play together and conquer the one they deem "the one" together. This author is notorious for her BDSM writings, and yes she conquers them beautifully. In th...more

First, where is her nipple? It's missing from the cover. Second, this started out very promising but fizzled out toward the end. Rachel is tormented, wanting a D/s relationship she can not have, wanting her family back. She is botteling all that desire up and coping with yoga. There was a lot of yoga and new age thinking presented here, and that pulled me out of the story when I had to stop and look up the 'Wild Thing' pose. Also, the philosophy of yoga and the D/s relationship Rachel craved, di...more
Afterlife was my introduction to both Joey Hill and her Knights of the Board Room series. Yeah, I'm pretty much hooked now.
The struggles that Rachel goes through in this book are real and painful. For me, watching a character over come psychological trauma is a fascinating and usually, satisfying read. I could 100% relate to Rachel's struggles to deal with her past and her ex-husband's cold treatment of her. Thankfully, Jon is there to help her realize her self worth.

I liked this story and I have always loved The Knights of the Boardroom.
Jon was so sweet and patient and I know that Rachel was broken but toward the end I was getting sick of her being so neurotic. I also got a little sick of all the Yoga talk and holistic crap but I guess that was why Jon and Rachel would make such a great pair.
It was nice to have past characters in each of the books in this series.

A wonderful heartfelt story between two people who really needed each other. Joey W. Hill is an amazing author that always brings characters alive in the page, until you feel extremely close to them. Not only is her Knights of the Boardroom series amazing, but all of her other stuff is quite good. Jon is a fantastic man who truly understands Rachel who after suffering through so much pain has finally found the right man for her. It was fantastic seeing the other knights and their partners and I...more
I was given the newest in this series in exchange for a review. I'm currently reading that one and will write a review on all three (#1, #4, #5) when I'm done. I didn't bother reading #2 and #3 because it seems like those two stories are part of a larger book of short stories - and I wasn't interested in buying the additional stories.
Based on reviews of the 5th book, I decided to read the others first. Anyway, a review will follow. But I'll say this for now, if you liked 50 shades, give these a...more

This was my favorite of all the KotBR series books. I really liked the way Jon got into Rachel's head, and that he patiently waited to long to claim her.
The BDSM club scene was pretty hot. Now that Lucas is married to Cassandra, I really didn't think Hill would go there with Lucas's 'special initiation' of the women to the Knights of the Boardroom family. But she did, with Cass watching. Wow. I gotta admit that was kinda hot and kinky.

Okay, let me start by saying that my 2-star review in no way reflects how well this story was written, because Joey W. Hill definitely seems like a great writer. It instead reflects my own opinion of the genre, which I have come to realize (or maybe always knew?) isn't my cup of tea. The BDSM world is somewhat interesting, but that's as far as my excitement goes. I feel like it truly detracts from relationship characterization--or perhaps I just don't get it at all, which I would be the first to...more
Having read this as an e-book when it first came out in November 2010, I now have the paperback in my kinky little hands, and it stands the test of time.
Rachel meets Jon at her yoga classes and is immediately attracted to him. For a year she has 'unsuitable' dreams/emotions about him, but surpresses her feelings. She is a natural submissive, but her life has not been good to her: her ex-husband did not understand (or ignored) her needs, so she had an acrimonious divorce; and she lost her son.

I love Joey Hill, I love this series, and I loved this story. This is not a short like the first 3 books in the series. She used the extra pages to delve deeper into their minds, their relationship, and have some interaction with the other Knights and thier wives. I loved Jon and Rachel. It's a Hill book, so Rachel has a pretty bad past. Jon is amazing as he tries so hard to help her through it. I wanted Rachel to just accept his love immediately, but then it wouldn't have been the amazing story...more
This is my least favorite of the knights of the board room series. I found Rachel's character nauseating, weak and boring. I understand that she had many issues to overcome but she just wasn't interesting to me, I wanted to shake her when she was confronted by her x outside the club and had a complete meltdown. Jon was also my least favorite of the 5 doms, too perfect (which is boring) - not enough fun and humor in this one for me.
I really enjoyed this book. Just know you're goin deep w/these. There's a fine line w/ Master/slave for me. This didn't cross it in my mind. I felt like every move Jon made was in her best interest. Like she was relying on him TO read her thoughts and not listen to her words.
Just another joy of reading:)) We all read the same story and interpret it our own way. Enjoy!!

Book 4 and my favourite Knight so far - he's an old soul in a fit young body and he's extremely spiritual. This is very hot - Jon wants Rachel as his forever sub but she is emotionally scarred from a bad marriage and a tragic loss. Jon has to work hard to get her to believe in her submission and it's very hot, very sexy and very satisfying.

I’ve always had an aversion to reading, watching or hearing interviews of favorite actors, authors, musicians, etc. because so often the real person doesn’t measure up to the beauty of the art they produce. Their politics or religion are distasteful, or they’re shallow and self-absorbed, a vacuous mop-head without a lick of sense. From then on, though I may appreciate their craft or art, it has so...more
