I’m gonna say it straightforward. Afterlife is down to a one-star rating for a non-consensual sex scene. Without this particular scene it would have been a 3.5 star rating. My review doesn’t reflect how well the story is written. It reflects my opinion and my issues.

I don’t usually read a lot of BDSM as I don’t like the hardcore stuff and end up abandoning the book. I usually check out reviews first before deciding to go ahead and read. I was a little worried about this one, but I really enjoyed it despite the fact there were a few things that I was uncomfortable with.

I was a little worried about this one, but I really enjoyed it despite the fact there were a few things that I was uncomfortable with.

Jon was a Dom and was well known at his club. He admitted that he wasn’t usually hardcore but he would be so as and when he thought necessary. He loved Rachel and believed that those methods were the only way to reach her; he felt it necessary to be strict and punish her if she did not respond or follow instruction properly. I will admit and say that I did cringe at some of those punishments, but I kinda understood them and accepted them especially as he did at times have doubts about how he was dealing with her, and that was evident from his conversations with the other Knights.

Rachel was a woman who desperately wanted to live her life with her Master but didn’t believe that she should indulge in those fantasies. She had lost her son in Afghanistan a few years ago and was still very traumatised by that. She was also traumatised because her husband had divorced her, she was fundamentally a submissive and she felt that she had let him down! She had tried to hide her fantasies and desires and be just what her husband wanted but he still left anyway and verbally abused her calling her a whore and a deviant. He convinced her that her fantasies were wrong and that anyone who thought or acted them out was dirty!

There was one particular scene that I struggled with and that was the scene in the car just after they had bumped into the ex-husband. Rachel had finally started to believe that there was nothing wrong in her fantasies and that she was a beautiful person and it was ok to live her life with her Master if that is what she wanted, but when her ex-husband made that nasty comment all her newly found confidence disappeared and she was right back where she started. I did skip most of the scene that followed as I just couldn’t read it, but I did get the impression that Jon acted out of fear because he couldn’t reach Rachel and he was frightened to lose her….I could be totally wrong (as I didn’t read much of that scene) with this assumption and I certainly do not condone his actions because I DON’T!! They were wrong and regardless of whatever reason he should not have acted as such, but I was trying to make sense of why he would behave that way when it was obvious that he wasn’t cruel and that he did love Rachel.

Up until this point my thoughts were steering towards a 4 star rating but because of that scene it has been reduced to 3 stars.

In AFTERLIFE, Jon and Rachel are the lead characters. Jon's a sexual Dominant and Rachel is a submissive (albeit one who's never had the chance to realise her potential thanks to an ex-husband who never understood her and abused her preference).

What I love about any of Ms.Hill's stories is the incredible emotional connections she manages to develop between the characters, and between the characters and me as a reader. While some of the characters backgrounds and experiences are unfamiliar territory for me, it doesn't matter. The depth of conflict, the feelings and thoughts of the characters make them real and I can relate to that. That draws me into their story. And Jon and Rachel are no exception.

I loved Jon's incredible sense of compassion, caring and need to protect Rachel (to the point I was wondering where I could find a Jon of my own - LOL). I cried a couple of times for Rachel and her pain and the hurdles she had to overcome to trust Jon and what he wanted to give her.

I read AFTERLIFE in one sitting (I've only read two books in this series, and both have been out of chronological order, but not knowing the some of the other secondary characters hasn't detract from the storyline - this can be read as a standalone). I stayed up to the early hours of the morning to finish it and went away with that "ahhhh, damn that was another great story" feeling. AFTERLIFE is going on my keeper shelf and will be read many more times.

Joey W.Hill is an auto-buy for my bookshelf and I'm now heading off to order the others in this series!(less)

Oooh child... Who knew Jon was such a badass? Our Yoga lovin' inventor is actually pretty hardcore. I think it's because he is so damn calm that to me, he came across as the most self-assured and confident. You know what they say...it's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for.

So um yeah, Hill is definitely progressing the series with each installment. This is the most graphic and hardcore I have ever read from Hill. However, that's not to say it was all just sloppy, jammed sex scenes with no emotional resonance. No, not at all. Rachel and Jon's story was as tender and heartbreaking as it was hot and taboo.

I loved that Hill explored the older woman/younger man issue and all of the insecurities a woman, esp. a woman who has been through what Rachel had, would have with that. What I appreciated most was that Jon was certainly not perfect and took a huge mis-step in his burgeoning fragile relationship with Rachel.

** SPOILERS**

After a particularly intense and rather harsh domination scene Jon orchestrated in a public arena in order to get Rachel to truly 'let go' and be at peace with her submissive desires (which was a major 1st for Rachel...talk about ripping of the band-aid), Hill deftly gave us the immediate insight into how that calmed the mind of a true submissive nature like hers. However, just as swiftly, Hill also showed us just how easy that fleeing sense of "right" could be pulled out from under Rachel (& Jon) due an unforeseen confrontation immediately afterward. Rachel's self-esteem and high was so precarious, all it took were some barbarous words from her bitter ex and Rachel shattered and splintered away from who she was becoming.

I found it to be an excruciating emotional fall out and as a reader who was completely invested in the characters, painful to read. Yet I loved that Hill did this because it balanced the scales and forced Rachel to deal with her reality and nature and Jon to reframe his perspective, admit he handled things wrong and work a different approach to earn her faith in not only him but them as a couple. Instead of forcing her to meet on his ground, which he had been doing, he came to meet her on hers and gently earn her trust.

It didn't matter if they were 2 bog beasts laying it down, the emotional component completely resonated with me and I cared about these characters and their story. The rest was just gravy.

Confession time…I am reading this series totally out of order, but it isn’t causing problems. Hopefully though the reviews will come out in order. I read book one first (Board Resolution) and didn’t like it. So when I saw Hostile Takeover on Net Galley (book #5) I decided to give the series another try. After that I grabbed up book #2 in the anthology Unlaced, but then sped forward to book #4, Afterlife. So I still have the middle book, #3 to read before I can say I have read the entire series.

After that I grabbed up book #2 in the anthology Unlaced, but then sped forward to book #4, Afterlife. So I still have the middle book, #3 to read before I can say I have read the entire series.

The Knights of the Boardroom are made up of five men who work together and while not blood brothers, they hold a bond stronger than family. All are Dominants and when the find the woman for them, go to the ends of the earth (or the boardroom) to get them. Matt and Savannah is book one, Lucas and Cass are book two, Peter and Dana book three, Jon and Rachel book 4 and finally Ben and Marcie book 5.

Jon is the zen guy in my mind. He believes in fate, energizes, yoga, and ancient teachings. As he describes himself, he is an old soul in a young body. Extremely intelligent, he is also the inventor of the group and the calming force for all of them. He very rarely loses his temper. Oh, and his inventions would make me quiver if they were ever really…well real. Not all of his inventions are work related, but also sexually arousing tools to invoke mind blowing orgasms from a woman.

Rachel is broken. That is the simplest way to explain her. She runs the local yoga studio, but she leads an entirely solitary life after a bad divorce and the death of a family member. A brush with losing herself, she has pulled herself together, but never really lives life. She is a sexual submissive, but also a deep hearted service submissive. By this I mean she gives everything of herself to a Master, even if he isn’t a Master for real. Her divorce from an unemotionally equipped husband has left her walled up in defense, where no man can breach. After a year of wearing a wedding band to keep men at bay, Jon has figured out her game and won’t take no for an answer.

The emotional upheaval this book gave me was gut wrenching. A woman so torn up with her wants but also afraid to love again for being hurt. A young hearted woman stuck in a 43 year old body. How could a man 13 years younger love her? The turmoil she felt went straight to my heart…yeah I am a 40 something woman myself with stretch marks, age lines and a pouch that I wish would go away. I felt her insecurities straight within myself. But her isolation made my heart break. To not have someone to love her or even her to love back seemed such a waste from a beautiful woman.

Jon on the other hand stayed away from Rachel thinking she was married, but always feeling attraction to her. When he learns she is not married he decides to make a move, but something happens that makes him accelerate his moves. He is aggressive and won’t take no for an answer and this is probably where most of my problems come into play. Never once is there a safeword to their play. He takes things for granted thinking he knows what is best for Rachel. It just pushed too many boundaries I felt needed more time, whereas he felt needed to be nipped right away.

So there is one particular scene I had a horrible time processing. It is a spoiler, but I have to warn you about it. There is a scene that could and I did perceive as a rape scene. What was a wonderful five star book quickly pummeled with just this one scene.

If you aren’t familiar with yoga, I suggest you pay attention to the descriptions, ignore it all or look it up. There is a lot of yoga positions and terminology that most times left me confused on what was being put where and in what direction. This seems to be a common problem when I read Joey W. Hill’s books.

The ending seemed rushed and pieced together. I don’t feel it resolved anything. It won’t keep Rachel from running or magically fix all those walls she has erected. You see them together again in Hostile Takeover and everything seems so wonderful for them. Just couldn’t buy it.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Joey W. Hill has grown so much in her writing. The books are fabulous, but this one made a poor decision in one scene that I had to lower the rating from an A to a C over. The beautifully written words to express the vault of despair Rachel was in, the enlightening words to translate Jon’s world. It was lyrical and moving, the words touched my soul and left an impression that won’t go away anytime soon.(less)

I always pictured Jon as the soft and cuddly bear, the one who loved to hug trees and could levitate while meditating. And yes I have a mentally skewed perception of guys that do yoga and have their ying and yang firmly balanced – it wasn’t overly masculine in my mind…..however, I got a bit of a knuckle upside the head when I read Afte...more 3.75

Jon was hardcore. In my opinion more hardcore than all the other Knights so far.....to the point that it stepped over my short threshold of dominant enjoyment and dipped a little into unwanted territory.

Yes, he was full on, no holds barred, confident as hell – dominant, but there was one specific scene where he pushed the issue too far with me – that was the emotional time in the limo with Rachel. I understand that it may have been what Rachel needed at the time, but I either wasn’t in tuned enough with the characters to be able to accept it, or I’m just being a little pansy about the whole thing – but either way, it was a scene that I didn’t overly enjoy.

Another thing that I found hard was being able to concentrate on the yoga positions. I don’t do yoga, so I found it hard to visualise the positions while keeping up with the book.

But enough about the bits I didn’t enjoy – what I did enjoy was the writing. Joey has such a great ability to suck you in to every scene. To make you feel each touch, to make you heart pound with emotion and this book did it constantly. I felt for both characters, Rachel with her huge loss and Jon as he tried to convince the woman he loved that she was worthy of his love. It was very emotional, very steamy and very well written.

The Knights of the Boardroom are definitely the hottest dominant books I have ever read. The stories seem real, so descriptive and detailed that it seems more like a documentary on real men, than a fantasy.

Joey Hill is one talented writer and I am eagerly anticipating Ben’s book.

Afterlife was my introduction to both Joey Hill and her Knights of the Board Room series. Yeah, I'm pretty much hooked now.

The struggles that Rachel goes through in this book are real and painful. For me, watching a character over come psychological trauma is a fascinating and usually, satisfying read. I could 100% relate to Rachel's struggles to deal with her past and her ex-husband's cold treatment of her. Thankfully, Jon is there to help her realize her self worth.

I liked this story and I have always loved The Knights of the Boardroom.

This was my favorite of all the KotBR series books. I really liked the way Jon got into Rachel's head, and that he patiently waited to long to claim her.

The BDSM club scene was pretty hot. Now that Lucas is married to Cassandra, I really didn't think Hill would go there with Lucas's 'special initiation' of the women to the Knights of the Boardroom family. But she did, with Cass watching. Wow. I gotta admit that was kinda hot and kinky.

Having read this as an e-book when it first came out in November 2010, I now have the paperback in my kinky little hands, and it stands the test of time.

Rachel meets Jon at her yoga classes and is immediately attracted to him. For a year she has 'unsuitable' dreams/emotions about him, but surpresses her feelings. She is a natural submissive, but her life has not been good to her: her ex-husband did not understand (or ignored) her needs, so she had an acrimonious divorce; and she lost her son.

Jon, in turn, is a quiet, creative Dom that would make any woman go wide-eyed even as she melts. He’s perfect for Rachel and their road to happily ever after was engaging from start to finish.

Afterlife is the fourth Knights of the Board Room book, but having only read the first story, Board Resolution, I can safely say that Afterlife fully stands on its own. The other Knights of the Board Room all appear, as do the heroines of the previous three books. The only niggle I had when it came to Afterlife concerns a few scenes where both Jon and a friend of his on the police department cross the line and invade Rachel’s privacy. The reasoning they gave just didn’t hold up and drew me out of the story, much to my disappointment. Still, it didn’t dim my overall enjoyment of Afterlife. Joey W. Hill blends the erotic and emotional perfectly in Afterlife, providing readers with a gorgeous romance.(less)

I love Joey Hill, I love this series, and I loved this story. This is not a short like the first 3 books in the series. She used the extra pages to delve deeper into their minds, their relationship, and have some interaction with the other Knights and thier wives. I loved Jon and Rachel. It's a Hill book, so Rachel has a pretty bad past. Jon is amazing as he tries so hard to help her through it. This is my least favorite of the knights of the board room series. I found Rachel's character nauseating, weak and boring. I understand that she had many issues to overcome but she just wasn't interesting to me, I wanted to shake her when she was confronted by her x outside the club and had a complete meltdown. Jon was also my least favorite of the 5 doms, too perfect (which is boring) - not enough fun and humor in this one for me.

I really enjoyed this book. Just know you're goin deep w/these. There's a fine line w/ Master/slave for me. This didn't cross it in my mind. I felt like every move Jon made was in her best interest. Like she was relying on him TO read her thoughts and not listen to her words.
Just another joy of reading:)) We all read the same story and interpret it our own way. Enjoy!!

Book 4 and my favourite Knight so far - he's an old soul in a fit young body and he's extremely spiritual. This is very hot - Jon wants Rachel as his forever sub but she is emotionally scarred from a bad marriage and a tragic loss. Jon has to work hard to get her to believe in her submission and it's very hot, very sexy and very satisfying.

From then on, though I may appreciate their craft or art, it has somehow been tarnished.

Therefore, whenever I’m asked to provide personal information about myself for readers, a ball of anxiety forms in my stomach as I think: “Okay, the next couple of paragraphs can change forever the way someone views my stories.” Why on earth does a reader want to know about me? It’s the story that’s important.

So here it is. I’ve been given more blessings in my life than any one person has a right to have. Despite that, I’m a Type A, borderline obsessive-compulsive paranoiac who worries I will never live up to expectations. I’ve got more phobias than anyone (including myself) has patience to read about. I can’t stand talking on the phone, I dread social commitments, and the idea of living in monastic solitude with my husband and animals, books and writing is as close an idea to paradise as I can imagine. I love chocolate, but with that deeply ingrained, irrational female belief that weight equals worth, I manage to keep it down to a minor addiction. I adore good movies. I’m told I work too much. Every day is spent trying to get through the never ending “to do” list to snatch a few minutes to write.

Despite all these mediocre and typical qualities, for some miraculous reason, these wonderful characters well up out of my soul with stories to tell. When I manage to find enough time to write, sufficient enough that the precious “stillness” required rises up and calms all the competing voices in my head, I can step into their lives, hear what they are saying, what they’re feeling, and put it down on paper. It’s a magic beyond description, akin to truly believing my husband loves me, winning the trust of an animal who has known only fear or apathy, making a true connection with someone, or knowing for certain I’ve given a reader a moment of magic through those written words. It’s a magic that reassures me there is Someone, far wiser than myself, who knows the permanent path to that garden of stillness, where there is only love, acceptance and a pen waiting for hours and hours of uninterrupted, blissful use.

If only I could finish that darned “to do” list. (less)
