An interesting historic look at the philosophy behind research on biospheres. With many of biosphere science's founding principles "prescient" and accounted for, the Biosphere is an important book for anyone interested in global ecology.

Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky was a Russian and Soviet mineralogist and geochemist who is considered one of the founders of geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and of radiogeology.
