Ok but not recommended. I wished it would be over and skimmed some parts.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
There was too much civil war history. I'd prefer less history and more character interaction - for a romance novel. Sometimes there was too much time spent in the heads of the characters. For example, Jesse was thinking about all the political and slavery issues about to happen before the civil war. Jesse and Kiernan loved each other. She kept denying it to herself and claimed she hated him because he was...more

This novel of the Civil War is the first in a trilogy about the Camerons, a wealthy Virginia plantation family who find their loyalties divided when the Civil War breaks out. Most of this novel is told from the point of view of Kiernan Mackay, the spirited and beautiful neighbor of the Camerons who has loved the oldest Cameron brother, Jesse, for most of her life. Time and circumstances finally collaborate to get this couple together, but their bliss is short-lived when their beloved Virginia se...more

3.5 stars

Being ten years younger then Jesse Cameron, Kiernan had to wait to grow up until she caught his eye - but watch out when he returns on leave and gets one look at her - she is the woman for him for life. That said, things are heating up between the North and the South and Keirnan's southern sympathies are no big secret and she's none too happy when Jesse stays with the Union Army. She marries on the rebound, is promptly widowed (this is revealed in the first few pages) and vows to hate J...more

El...more

A few years ago I sought this book series out on Amazon. I was on a good Heather Graham kick and maybe nostalgic about the epic Civil War novels that I read as a child when my dad was finished with them. For years they languished on my To Be Read Shelf and I finally picked them up. To be fair to Ms. Graham, it's possible that this is just not my kind of novel. It had a few elements that reminded me of the later Graham novels that I enjoyed but overall I found that I had to force myself to see th...more

booksonboard.comheather graham has written another great historical romance. this one takes place during the civil war. the heroine is a staunch confederate while the hero is for the union even though he is from virginia. i thought the heroine was a little shallow but i also thought the hero was little too preachy. however, the characters manage to find love despite there differences and i would still recommend reading this book and the rest of the series.

Enthralling Civil War Romance!

This is the first in the Cameron Saga Civil War trilogy (and follows the Cameron stories told in Graham's North American Women trilogy). I highly recommend the whole Cameron Saga--all 6 books. They are rich in history, well-told romances with amazing detail, seamless dialog and a family of wonderful men and women you will love.

This story begins in 1859 with the Harper's Ferry incident involving abolitionist John Brown. Jesse Cameron is serving as a doctor for the fe...more

I so fell for this hero and the heroine has a cool name(Kiernan)! I love how Graham starts the book off on the unsettling eve of the war that's to come and juxtaposes that with the love and disparity that is rife in Kiernan and Jesse's relationship. Jesse's conscience is an apt character in this book, but Kiernan's breathes fire (which is tempered by being annoying) gone-with-the-wind style. I enjoyed this series when experiencing my first forage of romance reading.

This is the story about the Camerons, a family from Tidewater region in Virginia. It opens in 1859 in Harper's Ferry, VA, the night John Brown raids the town. Jesse & Daniel are brothers in the US Army. Jesse is a doctor and Daniel is in the calvary. Their childhood friend is Keirnan and she is Reb. She and Jesse love each other, but she refuses to marry him the day he leaves VA to join the Yankee army, instead marrying Anthony Miller, her friend. Anthony is killed shortly in the war shortly...more

I loved this whole series. I read it a long time ago but still have it on the shelf in my library, a place only few books will fit out of the thousands I have read.

Pretty great book. You get history and romance what more could you ask for? Its the Civil War era and lots of great facts from it.

I LOVED this book! I remember being so upset when I was done, I HAD TO read it again just to get that warm fuzzy feeling back again.

Jesse . . . sigh. The discipline and passion of a military man. Love reading the fourth and fifth book in this series. About once every year or so.

YAWN! YAWN! YAWN! Too much Civil War history and not enough romance. I'm not even sure I want to even attempt to read the other two to this series.

This is the Civil War romance series I cut my teeth on, and I still love the books dearly. Highly recommend them!

Good but a bit too wordy. Could have cut it down by 100 pages and read the same book.
Lorilee
It was ok. I likes some of the historical facts but otherwise not a very exciting story at all.

Having a glimpse of romance and life during the civil war was extremely nice.

This is the first book in the Civil War trilogy where we are introduced to the Cameron family: Jesse, Daniel, and Christa. In this book, Jesse is fighting for the Union when he meets Kiernan Miller, a rebel widow who hates him because he has turned his back to his Southern roots.

Graham weaves history within the story to give the reader background into the time period (a little history lesson). I found this author by complete accident, but I have really stuck with her books after reading this se...more
