A beautiful (though occasionally tough to follow) travelogue of one french comic artist's time on a small Japanese island. The illustrations are amazing & the informative bits are sassy and fun. I'd love to read this authors other works.

This book is chock full of what I like to call "intangible cuteness". It's not quite the same as, say, a .gif of a kitten romping, it's something more about the way the artist and author sees, describes, and portrays his experiences of this idyllic little Japanese island of 350-odd people. There is a lovely mixture of purely observational drawing (the landscape, the buildings) and storytelling (pages devoted to the description, both visual and written, of various inhabitants, for example). It is ...more

I just want to live behind Chavouet's eyes. I am so thrilled this was finally translated! It tells the tale of Chavouet's summer-long stay in a small, isolated, delightfully country-Japan Japanese village, where he almost-sort-of-kind-of befriends the locals, enjoys many encounters with delicious, weird and funky fish, observes old Japanese dudes in their natural habitats, makes up stories about cats, and just.....enjoys the relative lack of action that island life provides. Though I've been luc ...more

This book is the exact opposite of Tokyo on Foot. Instead of life if the big city it's a heartwarming story of life and the people on a tiny island in the Inland Sea. It's a glimpse into a different Japan and the hand-drawn pictures are more interesting and exciting than any photo could be.

Just as good if not a bit quirkier and in depth than his previous book, Tokyo on Foot. So good. Once more an exploration of a different culture that wasn't patronizing or awed, just down to earth and lovely and quirky and sincere. Love it love it love it

It has been awhile since I enjoyed a book as much as Manabeshima Island Japan. Loved living in the island vicariously through Chavouet's lens. His illustrations, choke full with details, are a pleasure to read. Now I want to visit Japan more than ever!

So nice to read! Highly recommend for a day's reading. Lovely graphic style, and I really felt like I got to know the island and the small community that lives there! Excellent book :)

I really enjoy Chavouet's drawing style and this book is cute and entertaining. It's pretty much a travel blog in book form but with hand drawings instead of photos. Good stuff.
