I think maybe Jillian’s got a point about these Australian authors. Seriously, what are they putting in the water down there? And where can I buy me some?!

Australian author Rebecca Lim’s novel Mercy is one of the more interesting books I’ve read this year. And at a 111 books and counting, that’s really saying something! Complex, gripping and dark, this novel definitely marks another author to watch out for.

Mercy, as she calls herself, often finds herself in a new place, in a new life, in a new...more

Mercy is a promising start of what is sure to be a captivating series.

This book was so.... different. In a good way. There are definitely elements of this story that I loved and other elements that I felt were lacking in one way or another.

I loved the story of Mercy waking up in these various girls' bodies and inhabiting them for short periods of time, not knowing exactly why she's there, but somewhat unseeingly helping them all the same. She feels their presence within the host body, and she k...more

I loved it!!! At last, a book where the main FEMALE character is tough, strong willed and independent - NOBODY messes with Mercy and gets away with it. She can look after herself, thanks very much!

No spoilers here, but I felt like standing up and cheering when Mercy dishes out her own brand of justice at the end. I was also kept guessing right up to the last moment as to who the "baddie" was.

For those of you who are sick of vampires, werewolves and zombies but like the combination of angels (tou...more

This book’s blurb grabbed me as soon I found it on goodreads a few months ago, so I knew I just had to read it. Thankfully, netgalley to the rescue once again! An e-galley fell into my lap, and so I happily dug in.

From the first page, this book sunk its claws in and never once let go. Lim has an extraordinary talent of retelling the oldest of tales and making them new again. Girls getting kidnapped combined with an amnesiac angel in a pseudo-war with archangels and her lover, Lucifer? All of thi...more

Aussie Book challenge 2011 #1

Soul-jacking is something that is necessary rather then natural to Mercy. See she's an on-the-run (so to speak) angel that has to hide in bodies till she can find herself and the boy who captures her dreams; Luc.
Till then however, Mercy has to live the lives of her host bodies but at least she tries to make some good out of them.
This time Mercy has the body of Carmen, who is in a choir group which brings them to a town called Paradise. A mystery unfolds and...more

This might just be me but I truly love books that offer something convoluted where the main character is concerned. Not convoluted as in perverse but convoluted as in richly complex where issues of identity are concerned. This complexity inherent in the main character is one of the main reasons that I enjoyed Mistwood so much and it is also one of the main reasons I gave Mercy five stars.

There are two distinct personalities living in one body and though the human personality does not surface at...more

What if you were an angel in exile...but you had no memory of why you'd fallen?

Mercy is a fallen angel who repeatedly wakes up in a new body following each time she's helped someone through a personal crisis. She doesn't know why she's doomed to this existence, only that she must somehow try to better that person's life while she's there.

This time, however, she wakes up as a foster child of a deeply troubled family, whose 18-year-old daughter Lauren has been missing for two years. The mystery un...more

This is how this book made me feel.

Not like I've read a ton of crappy books this year because I've enjoyed most of the books I've read, but this was pretty creative. Different. This is definitely one of my favorite books of the year. I actually haven't read many angel novels, but this series I'm definitely enjoying. I downloaded this for my Kindle for PC. But now I want the actual book for my collection. Just too cool not to have in my bookshelves.

What I really liked about this book was the di...more

Disney-Hyperion has been so gracious as to allow me to read an ARC of this novel, through NetGalley, prior to its release today, May 17, 2011. I must say, I was blown away by the story. Mercy pulled me in from the very first page, and I was completely wrapped up in the story as I read. While Mercy doesn’t know who she really is, or what she’s truly supposed to do, she does know that she takes over people’s bodies and lives their lives for them for a short period of time. For me, this mysterious...more

Also appears on The Screaming Nitpicker.

For Mercy, it's normal to wake up and have no idea who she is or where she is. She's cursed to souljack the bodies of teenage girls for a reason unknown to her and not knowing what else she can do, she tries to help the girl she is possessing. This time around, Mercy is now Carmen Zappacosta, an eczema-afflicted soprano with a gifted voice. On a trip with her chorus group to Paradise, Mercy rooms with the Daley family and discovers their plight: Their daug...more

Mercy is the first book in an new angel series by author Rebecca Lim.

This story follows Mercy, who wakes up on a school bus in another girls body. Mercy calls herself a soul snatcher as she inhabits another person's body until she figures out her mission on earth. As Carmen, Mercy stays with a host family as a part of a choir and soon finds out that their daughter Lauren, has been missing for almost 2 years. Realising what her mission is, Mercy b...more

Mercy wakes on a school bus to find herself yet again in another body, unsure of where she is or who she is.. She is bound for a town called Paradise and unsure why. Paradise is a place where everyone knows everyones business or they think they do.
Mercy is an angel, she finds herself being thrown back to earth with no previous memories of who she is or where she has been, on her way to try and find her way back to Heaven after taking Lucifars side and now suffering the consequences.

After “waking” to the sound of someone shouting, Mercy realises that she is on a bus bound for a small and quiet town called “Paradise”. Self-named, main character Mercy is an angel that has been exiled from heaven for reasons she can’t remember. Every time she “wakes” in a body of a complete stranger, barely remembering any previous memories. The unfortunate “host” person this time is Carmen Zappacosta, a girl that is near t...more

Really cool book with an interesting and twisty plot that keeps you guessing the whole way through. Just reading the fourth book in the series at the moment and have been thoroughly satisfied the whole series through!

The gist: Mercy wakes up in a body that isn't hers with no idea who she is or where she is. And this isn't the first time it's happened. For some reason unbeknownst to her, she keeps being shoved into body after body - sometimes staying a day, sometimes a few weeks, but every time (...more

Cover:

Looking up this book, on either barnesandnobles.com, amazon, borders.com or goodreads, the picture does this cover no justice! Before judging it you MUST see it in person!

The whole sleeve is shimmery and shiny, the title is written out in a beautiful teal font, and when looking a bit closer, you can even see the girl's angel wings in the background.

I usually don't like covers with just a character, simply because you can't really guess what the story might be about! But the cover Mercy, h...more

I loved this book. It was beautifully written, and the plot was definitely original and refreshing - much different from other YA angel novels I've read in the past.
The book has everything - mystery, romance, angels - jeez, I can't ask for a more perfect book for my tastes.
As I said before, I loved the writing style of the book. I already have an affinity for books written in first person present, and coupled with the beautiful, almost lyrical writing, I was drooling though this book.

Pretty interesting all around and engaging once you get past the first few pages, Mercy is a decent book. Granted, you would probably be confused as to what's going on, why Mercy is placed into Carmen's body, and who are the strange supernatural beings that float around here and there if you hadn't read the synopsis.

Angel books make me leery, though mostly because of the religious connotations attached to the sheer fact that they're, well, angels. But this one isn't too heavy in that regard, an...more

There are some books that just make me pause for a while and wonder why I haven't read it before. This was one of them.

The thing about Mercy was that the premise of it didn't seem all that interesting. At all. I honestly believed it would be your normal angel novel, but quite unusual, I was proven wrong. Mercy was different. Good different. It was fantasy, romance, and mystery perfectly woven into one novel. Halfway through the novel, I had a million questions running through my head. Mercy by Rebecca Lim, is a YA book about Mercy, an angel (or something like that, it’s not entirely articulated, despite what the blurb says). She is forcibly thrust into random girls bodies and forced to take over their lives. She never knows where she’ll wake up, who she’ll have to be or why. This time, she wakes up as Carmen, a star soprano singer in a high school choir. The choir is visiting the town of Paradise for a concert...more

Mercy is the first novel in a series by Rebecca Lim about an angel, who repeatedly has to return to Earth in new forms, to resolve a rift between the heavenly beings.

*SPOILER ALERT*

This time Mercy wakes up and is a girl named Carmen, who went away to choir camp and is staying with a family who's daughter went missing. The son, Ryan who is really good- looking, believes that his sister is alive and is searching for her. Mercy isn't suppose to interfere with anything but she can't help herself. Sh...more

A Paranormal-Mystery-Fantasy.

But how much do I need to know about choir?!

GOOD:
I was trying to figure out the mystery with Mercy and Ryan - who kidnapped Lauren. Nothing was given away and I was just as clueless as the characters were. Once they thought they knew who took Lauren and where she was I thought the same, then BAM! Nope, I was wrong and they were wrong. It was shocking to find out who the kidnapper was and the real story in the end.

The end was so heart wrenching! I was blown away by ho...more

Mercy is definitely special as it's unlike any YA paranormal book I've ever read. I really enjoyed the freshness of it.

The only real concern I had with this book was the fact that we don't learn much about Mercy. I was literally speed reading by the end of it hoping we'd find out more. It's all very mysterious. A little too mysterious.

Now what I did like about Mercy was the concept behind it. The idea of been thrown in to an arbitrary person, and having to somehow work out what's going on. I do...more

On this week’s episode of Quantam Leap, Mercy wakes up as Carmen. The girl is on her way to a two week stay with a host family for a multi-school choir concert. Mercy gets just enough time to figure out her new name before she meets the Daleys, still grieving the two year disappearance of daughter Lauren. She doesn’t know much but decides to help Lauren’s brother Ryan in trying to find the missing girl.

Mercy’s prickly and she doesn’t find a lot to like in anyone. The one person she does like, sh...more

There are not many great mysteries in YA literature and when I picked up this novel I thought it was going to be more paranormal romance than anything else, but it turned out to be a wonderful mystery.

The plot was intriguing and fast paced. I was constantly guessing who could have kidnapped Ryan's sister, Lauren, and my culprits changed every few pages up until the end. I was right with Mercy every time she figured out a new lead or wanted to question a different person. The search was well writ...more
