Mihail Sebastian (1907-1945) was one of the interwar European writers who were deeply influenced by Marcel Proust, in particular by the jealous ruminations of his protagonists, and the idea that we can never know the truth about another person, which was expressed by portraying a given character through various points of view that created a fluid and elusive “truth.”

The Accident has as a backdrop Bucharest’s (Romania’s capital) cosmopolitan life in the 1930s, when artists, lawyers, businessmen a

" Viata incepe mereu, sopti Nora [...]

O carte frumoasa despre

This book I`m reading now has two Sebastian`s novels:''the city with locusts''(n.r. 'orasul cu salcami')and 'the accident'.
Today I finished reading 'Orasul Cu Salcami'.Silly novel,comercial book.Didn`t like it.'The Accident' is next.Let`s see...

Last night I finished The Accident.This a more mature book than 'The City with Locusts',but it...just doesn`t fit me.When I started the novel I thought I was reading a romanian Daniel Steel.Cheap romance book.Sometimes it seems a composition of a third gr

I loved it. The book was an exquisite surprise, with its precise and colorful prose. It is a story about change, about starting anew, about loneliness, about things that must go and things that must come... about our reluctance to accept this, and about the glorious nature in Transylvania. It is a love story actually. I kept finding parts of me in him, in her... I kept wishing they would do this or that... I finished the book with the sentiment of stepping down from a train, after a long voyage. ...more

This was a very interesting novel about deception in love. Nora and Paul are both in their own way disillusioned of previous relations. Paul is still unable to pass over the way his ex-girl friend Ann is understanding relationships. He seems to be very close to edge and only a huge effort from Nora helped him not to do something he could regret later.
I liked the novel overall and most of it I liked the fact that it had a good ending.

-liliacul - un motiv al legăturii amoroase dintre Paul şi Ann, care însă primit de la Nora, demonstrează că este necesar ca unele lucruri să se schimbe, pentru că omul trebuie să înveţe să nu trăiască în trecut, în amintiri, în (dez)amăgire;
- îndrăzneala lui Paul de a porni pe un traseu foarte lung şi greu, deşi ştia să schieze doar de câteva zile;

Not sure how to rate/review this. It's not something I'd pick up on my own; the only reason I read it was because I read Mihail Sebastian's diary and he kept writing about writing this book, and so I got curious. The story is set in Romania in 1934. It was interesting to see what life in Romania was like before the Iron Guard, before World War II, before Communism -- in other words, before it became the poor and struggling nation it is today. It looks like the Romanians didn't live any different ...more

Not one thing going for it except... it's good to see fiction in translation. If you want to read more of what I think about it, go to:

Another favourite of mine from my teenage years. Read it also in my native language. Such a bitter-sweet story, it always puts a smile on my face when I think of it :)
