This was my first Spurgeon book and I guess my expectations were a little off. I was expecting truths I had never pondered that radically changed what I think about God, i.e. "Knowing God" by J. I. Packer. Instead, this book is all about the basics. It's written to an unbeliever as he ponders the truth, converts, and is starting to be made like Christ. It's full of good and essential doctrine, but so little of it was new to me or stated in a way that I hadn't heard that I found myself wanting to...more
Excellent!
This is what Christianity is all about: Grace. Without God's grace - forgiveness we would never be able to receive salvation from our sins and have a relationship with God.
Spurgeon defines very clearly how we must not think that salvation is by works, but only by grace. Salvation is a gift and not something we can buy through works. As Paul also points out, there is nothing that we can do to obtain salvation. Like a gift, salvation can be either accepted it, or refused.

Very easy study to read. A very gospel centered that it was all about the greatness of Jesus and the Lord's redemptive heart towards his own. He deals with the sin that entangles us by showing us Jesus. He reminds us that the Lord knows very well that we cannot change our own heart and cannot cleanse our own nature, but he can when we submit to him by faith in Jesus. With faith comes repentance. If repentance is missing, then your faith is short lived and on shaky ground. Repentance is our turni...more
Perhaps best read as meditative-devotional material, All of Grace is less a direct unfolding of doctrine along a progressive rationale and more a well-packed traveler’s knapsack loaded with “all the necessities” for a pilgrimage into the heart of Christian theology. Some chapters may sound altogether too basic, yet in others Spurgeon illuminates many familiar notions with his exceptional gift for metaphor and analogy. The talent for religious writing that is displayed here seems to come along on...more
Great little book which reminds us that salvation is God's work from start to finish. Written in a winsome and personal style for seekers. Direct and challenging in it's day, I'm sure. But illustrations etc seem a bit dated now.
Nevertheless, it is also invaluable to the Christian , touching on the topics of repentance, faith, justification, and their relationship with grace...
Helpful for preachers who wrestle with the tension of salvation being God's initiative, but at the same time call people...more

Funny how inconsistent Calvinist can be. Spurgeon being true to his Calvinistic self includes those parts of his theology, like "only those God predestined before the foundation of the world can believe and man has no part in any of it, its all of grace" But then pretty much the whole book is his pleading with men to put their faith in Jesus, he even encourages people to surround themselves with those teaching the gospel, because the more someone hears something, the more likely they are to thin...more
I CANNOT COMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH!!! I would plead with everyone who happens to stumble across this review to read and re-read this classic book. I have now gone through All of Grace three times and plan on reading it many times more. Please, read this book to learn about the glorious gospel of grace! Learn about justification by faith alone and come to see that Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith! Seriously consider reading this book, then buying multiple copies of it and handing the...more
I gave this book a four because Spureon's 19th century British English is somewhat difficult to read. I selected it to read because I want to know more about grace. I feel that there has not ben enough teaching on grace. The content of the book was wonderful but it to perserverance to finish rading it. Spurgeon talked alot about faith, by grace though faith, I can do nothing, and the Increase of faith.
basically 128 page gospel tract written in true Spurgeon fashion. I finished it in a night because I couldn't put it down. It is a fantastic reminder for the believers of the wonderful salvation that God has provided for us through His eternal plan, the Son's atoning work on the cross, and the wooing power of the Holy Spirit. A must read for all believers
Very good--the illustrations and plain language Spurgeon uses (as well as the order he addresses his arguments) to explain the Christian faith are fantastic. The truths are timeless, while the writing, style, and overall feel of the book definitely feel out-dated.
Quick read, although I chose to take my time. I recommend it to all who are looking for a quick, clear gospel presentation on the Cross and grace. (The complete text of the book is available online at http://www.spurgeon.org/all_of_g.h...more

Written in the 1800s, this book can be hard to read, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Christian terms and the Bible. But it is certainly a worthwhile read, especially his chapters on the principle of grace in confirmation and perseverence. In fact, I found some wonderful pearls of insight in those two chapters that I know I will reread often.

Recommends it for:
Everyone
Very good read. I would highly suggest it to anyone. Bring things into focus and explains faith, grace, repentance, and various aspects of each in a manner to be understood with ease.
This is not a book for the perfect. It is not a book for the easily offended, it is not a book for the atheist and it is certainly not a book for those without need of help. It is, however, a book for those who find themselves in need: In need of a Saviour, in need of happiness or in need of a better perspective. If you find your heart in a need of a kick start, or if you don't, read this book. It has passion and zeal by the bucketload, but perhaps most importantly; within its cover is a good ol...more
"An earnest word to those seeking salvation". I read this at just the right time -- I was a young but growing Christian grappling both with guilt over sin in my life that had not disappeared and with the temptation to put too much stock in my own increasing efforts in ministry. Spurgeon was a breath of fresh air as he reminded me that the gospel is "all of grace".
Spurgeon is an author who I was not fond of a few years ago. His word pictures seemed tangentile, and he often seemed to be going down multiple trains of thought at once. I kept running into his work, and now he is very dear to me.
This book is super encouraging. It is him bluntly sharing a rich theology of grace. This is the Gospel being presented. A great book to give to non-Christians, and a great reminder for those who do believe. I recommend it.

Although this book is a basic presentation of the gospel and clearly aimed at people investigating the Christian faith, I was still able, as a long-standing Christian, to get so much out of it. Everyone needs to continually come back to the gospel of grace and Spurgeon lays it all down in such a straightforward and direct manner that it still feels fresh over a hundred years later. The church in these days certainly needs to return to All of Grace!
Beautiful. As good an overview of Grace as I've ever read. Spurgeon rocks.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-92) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey M...more

“If a man were to sow a field, he could not excuse his neglect by saying that it would be useless to sow unless God caused the seed to grow. He would not be justified in neglecting tillage because the secret energy of God alone can create a harvest. No one is hindered in the ordinary pursuits of life by the fact that unless the Lord build the house they labor in vain that build it.”
