Set in a fantasy USA around what seems to be the Victorian age, this steampunk novella had a lot going for it in terms of setting and the initial premise to the story. I have to admit, I have a fondness for captor/captured pairings, so I was looking forward to seeing how the author would develop the romance whilst also keeping the setting fresh.

Henry is a boilerman on one of the dirigible ships which carry the wealthy from one side of the USA to the other. Whilst flying over the Deseret Lands, t...more

Steampunk is a popular genre in fantasy and I have to say that the cover artist did a fantastic job with this cover, enticing but also subtlety sexy. If I have to be sincere, I’m not a big fan of fantasy in general, but this particular subgenre, Victorian/futuristic setting, appeals to me; most of the time, like in this case, the author introduces some fantastic element (in this case an airship) maintaining the historical accuracy. When I checked out the gay steampunk stories list, this book looked and sounded like it would have more steampunk elements and less erotica in it. Not that I have anything against erotica, but I want more than the token gear and corsets most writers think constitutes steampunk stories, dammit!

It has more erotica than steampunk, yes. Although there are dirigibles, knife fighting, and clothes enough to have made me happy. It's cute, I guess. The sex scenes are hot enough--and realistic enough, giv...more
Competent writing. Not much plot, but interesting world-building. The characters were also interesting, but I would've liked to see them better fleshed out. Henry's motivations are not believable, and Volentine remains fairly one-dimensional. This would've been three stars, but I'm deducting a star for the abrupt and ridiculous ending.
2.5 Did not like. Great writing, but the story didn't work for me. Too dark and unpleasant for my tastes.
