Maria McBride is a little shy and a little awkward. So when she runs smack into--literally--the new guy at school, she doesn't know quite what to do. Tom's kind, good-looking, and well-built. And he's clearly drawn to Maria. But he turns down her tentative invites and seems very reluctant to talk about his past and his family--especially his father, the town's new funeral...more

Well, this was a let down. I had really enjoyed the first graphic novel in this series, I Love Him to Pieces, so I was looking forward to this one, too. But it seems every entry in the series will have a different writer and illustrator. And this was not an upgrade.

One of the things that I liked best about I Love Him to Pieces was the sweet, natural course that Dicey and Jack's romance took. But Tom and Maria take us right back to insta-love, which is really getting irritating to me. They're in...more

Review (Spoiler Alert! I found it impossible to review this without giving away quite a bit of the plot):
The story starts just after a car crash killed three popular cheerleaders, all named Erica (a sly nod to the movie "Heathers", and a great comment on the cookie-cutter nature of high school popularity). This should appeal to the underdog mentality of most teens and tweens. Basically, Made For Each Other is a fun and modern update on Mary Shelley's legendary Frankenstein. In this graphic nove...more

Tom Stone is the new student at Seward High School and is turning all the girl’s eyes, but it’s Maria McBride who catches his. They have fun together, when they can, but Tom’s father keeps him too busy for much of anything outside of work. Maria tries to visit Tom at home but the creepy assistant Mr. Graves makes it clear to Maria she is not wanted. Not around the funeral home and not around Tom. Tom won’t help Maria; he refuses to stand up to his father. Maria knows she and Tom are meant for ea...more

My Boyfriend is a Monster 2: Made for Each Other / 978-0-761-37077-2

I absolutely loved the first book in this loosely connected graphic novel series, "My Boyfriend Is a Monster 1: I Love Him to Pieces". I thought it was the perfect example of a great graphic novel, with great story, great plot, great characterization, and great use of the zombie apocalypse theme. But this second installment in the series has both a completely different writer and a completely different artist, and I just don't s...more

I'm going to have to break my review into two parts since this is a graphic novel done by two different people. The first part will be about the illustrator's work, the second will be about the author & the actual story.

First off, the artwork in this was pretty well done. Cowgur did a decent job of catching emotions as well as making me feel as if I had been reading a pulp horror comic, which suits the story. His art really was the high point of the book.

Unfortunately where the book comes up...more

Let me preface my review:
-I know this is a young adult comic.
-And I know that I am relatively new to the genre.
-As such maybe my expectations are still too high in what to expect from a comic book.....

However, I do expect a good story, whether it be in the plot or in the pictures throughout the comic itself. In this particular comic, I was expecting comedy and fun. Instead the story was just...unbelievable.

I know, I know - you're going to say - unbelievable? It's a comic book! It's a story abo...more

While the previous book in the series was fluffy and fun, Made for Each Other left me thinking, "Meh." Made for Each Other was occasionally funny, Tom and Maria were a cute couple, and the premise an interesting one, but the story seemed to move too fast for the time frame. While it was clear to me that at times Storrie was making fun of pulp comics, I don't know if the younger audience will catch that. They might see it more as being corny than a spoof. The art,...more

I was pleasantly surprised by the first entry in this series, I Love Him to Pieces, which was the rare light and fluffy zombie love story. So despite the change in authors, I was looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, while being almost precisely the same type of story, Made for Each Other just didn't make the same kind of so-adorable impression as Love Him to Pieces. In fact, it didn't really make any impression at all.

I'm actually kinda at a loss to figure out why Love Him to Pieces worke...more

Made for Each Other is a quick, easy and fun graphic novel.

I liked the Frankenstein plot. It was different from all those vampire and werewolf stories, which I like, but also can become boring at times. There was suspense, action and it was fast paced. I read this story in one sitting and I just couldn’t stop reading it.

The romance was a bit off. I mean Maria and Tom fell in love at first sight. They bumped into each other and then they where crazy in love. A bit too fast! Also there was not a...more

I’m reviewing this for NetGalley.

Made for Each Other is the second book to the My Boyfriend is a Monster series. Maria McBride goes to William H. Seward High School and plays the violin with the band. It is revealed that her parents had died in a car accident, so she lives with her aunt, Sophie. Three girls that went to this high school died in a car accident as well. Maria literally bumps into a new student, Tom Stone. Tom walks in on Maria playing the violin and nearly kisses her. Maria is def...more

Made for each other

Art: different artist the art is lack luster at best very classic American comic strip style very bland D

Characters: Tom and maria. Tom is a monster made for a lonely monster think a male version of Frankie from monster high with less personality. Maria is a band geek who falls for him. And some how they love each other. Maria makes Bella swan look tough in comparison these characters are dry rip offs of edward and Bella really dull and bland D

Story: Wow this story was a mess...more

ALERT: Spoiler included! Tom, the new guy at Maria's high school, has all the girls drooling but he and Maria are drawn together. Tom is often busy working at his dad's funeral home, particularly now that several townspeople have died. Turns out Tom's dad is Frankenstein's monster; he has been taking body parts from deceased members of the community to create new humans, Tom being one of them.

The main issue I had with the story is how unrealistic it was in terms of the relationship between Tom...more

Appeal Characteristics: Visual Art, Friendship, Music/Orchestra, Monsters

I think this one is my favorite from the series so far. Nothing like a strong muscular stitched together man. Seriously, I thought the premise was pretty cool, the explanation, the historical background at the end, AND I EVEN LEARNED SOMETHING. Frankenstein was the name of the scientist...NOT THE MONSTER! I was blown away. Here I thought this would be a cheesy lame book, but I had a fun time. It was sorta like the flashback...more

The first volume had (a slight) problem with the romance and supernatural elements taking too long to build up, but this book has the opposite problem: it all happens too quickly, defying belief. The romance is flimsy, the Frankenstein backstory is a little shallow, and the plot is way too obvious. It honestly feels very similar to the plot of Twilight, but with Frankenstein monsters instead. I was greatly disappointed, given that volume 1 was actually quite good. Luckily the books don't connect...more

The "My Boyfriend is a Monster" series are books that pits a normal(ish) girl with a not so normal guy. Each volume is written and illustrated by different people. This second volume has a normal girl who recently moved in with her blind aunt after her parents died. Only she's not the new kid at her high school anymore. There's a new guy in school, Tom Stone. He's handsome and he just moved to town with his father, the funeral director/mortician. Things are complicated when a string of 'accident...more

High school can be tough for anyone, but if you are in band it can be even harder. Maria McBride’s life is about to change.Tom Stone is the new kid in class and his father is the new town undertaker. Poor Tom he is a hunk but his life was put together in pieces, literally. He’s a Frankenboy, a hunky one. He was built by an historical character, interesting story there. Remember that jealous psycho chick ? Well, wait till you meet this one.
I loved the art work and the way the story flowed. I look...more

If you follow my reviews, you might have noticed that I already reviewed (and fell in love with) the first in this series. Made for Each Other is the second book in the "My Boyfriend is a Monster" series. As a fan of graphic novels, I'm always raring to pick up a new set! So I dove into the second one with as much fervor as the first.

I think it should be mentioned that I didn't realize until after I started reading that each novel in this series has a different story line, along with different c...more

Not Quite as Good as Love Him to Pieces

When Persephone Falls gets a new funeral director, the mysterious Dr. Stone, it's awfully coincidental that his service is suddenly in high demand. Maria and her friends don't get much respect with their tiny orchestra but when the new kid Tom Stone, son of Dr. Stone, takes an interest in them they find themselves drawn into the mystery of Tom's creepy family.

The story of Made for Each Other is pretty cool. I really liked the patchwork boy Tom and his cree...more

I didn’t realize that this was a completely different story from the first book. All in all, the plot seemed predictable and very, very unoriginal. I felt that I had read this same book many times before. I wish that I liked the characters more, but they never went into detail about them. I’m not really sure if I want to read the next one.

A cute addition to the 'My Boyfriend is a Monster' series. I liked the first one, I Love Him to Pieces, a little more, but in this one, the boyfriend actually was a monster.

It was a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek ride and I hope to see more in this series.
Wendy
Why not? A Twilight-esque retelling of all things, Frankenstein's monster.

And by Twilight-esque, I mean, taking something that is typically found in literature to NOT be a sexy teenager, and turn it into a sexy teenager that feels the need to whip off his shirt and show the fragile human girl what's going on underneath.

But it wasn't backwards and cringe-worthy by any means.
Edwin
So it was good that I decided to stick with the series. This second volume of "My boyfriend is a monster" was a big improvement from the first one.

Leaving zombies behind, this particular tale brings us face to face with Frankestein. I really enjoyed the story, how it progressed and the characters. The tale was more realistic (as far as fiction goes) and better paced than its previous counterpart. Definitely recommended for Tweens and Teens :)

2.5 stars but rating it on the lower end.
Kind of disappointing since the first in the series, I Love Him to Pieces, was so entertaining.
The monster mythology was eh! and the relationship was weak.
I don't know...It just wasn't that good.
Here's hoping Under His Spell is better!

2nd book involving Frankenstein's monster. Maria is incredibly accepting of the new boy, Tom, whom she has an enormous crush on. Especially since Tom is not 100% human. The rest of his "family" doesn't quite approve of their relationship, eventually forcing them to fight for it. Not quite as fun and touching as the first book, but still an enjoyable read.

I started this series because I have a 13 year old who's into manga and graphic novels, like me to be fair. I liked how this story played homage to the original without being a rewrite. The characters were fun, one being down right creepy in thier innocence, and I would 100% recommened it to anyone who is a fan of the genre, no matter thier age.
Amanda
I'm really liking these little GNs. The characters are fun, the horror tales reimagined are fun and they're just campy enough to be, well, fun. I would rate it higher except the art is fairly standard and the story depth is quite shallow and the appeal veers more female but what a fun book to hand to a reluctant reader.
Jess
I met Storrie at Baltimore Comic Con and I was able to get this signed. I'm very glad I did. This was a very fun and clever take on Frankenstein. It has echoes of Twilight but the heroine is interesting and is willing to fight back. It was also an easy read. I look forward to exploring other books in this series.
Miss Pippi the Librarian
A graphic novel featuring the original Frankenstein! Or, more specifically, Frankenstein's monster because it was Dr. Frankenstein who created the original monster. Storrie gives a classic tale new life with Dr. Franklin Stone and his funeral home in Persephone Falls, Alaska.
