Ascension (Dark Breed #1) by Sable Grace

Ascension strikes fast, hits you hard as it thrusts you into a very dark world that had my imagination spinning. It wasn’t a world I want to visit anytime soon. I was quickly taken in though, I wanted to find out more. There was so much going on in this novel, new breeds of paranormals, mixes...it was quite fascinating. And then with the intermix of the Greek gods and goddesses I thought it might be too much, but it worked and made for one of the most crea...more

When I started this book, I was not quite sure what to expect. I saw various ratings and reviews, and figured that I would give Ascension a try. I was heartily surprised to find that Sable Grace successfully fused myth, legend and fantasy to create a titillating new urban fantasy world. Ascension has a unique concept of the Gods of the greek pantheon who reign over the Above (earth where humans live) and Below (where otherworldly creatures live). I have always been a fan of greek mythology, so I...more

Ascension by Sable Grace is the first book in the Dark Breed series. It is an action packed mix of fantasy, mystery and romance. There are Greek gods, demons, witches, vampires, shape shifters and humans. The plot is fascinating and complex. The pace is fast and holds your attention. You will find yourself immersed in a world that is richly detailed and completely unique. The characters are very well written. Kyana is a great heroine. She is strong, independent and sarcastic with a soft...more

Ascension (Dark Breed Book #1) by Sable Grace

What a fun read! I would classify this as a PNR with UF elements. It had all the things I look for: kick-ass heroine (Kyana), brooding alpha-male goodness (Ryker), side characters with depth, action packed and a new twist on the old Greek myths (as opposed to the new ones, rolls eyes at self).

The writing is very polished for a debut. The book has been getting a lot of...more

Step aside vampires and werewolves, a new stomping ground has been slowly emerging in the paranormal genres: Greek Mythology. Sable Grace (the pen name of Heather Waters & Laura Baron) doesn’t just borrow one or two elements to create the Dark Breeds world, rather she incorporated the entire pantheon of gods and goddesses. The whole book is really like an urban fantasy version of Homer’s THE ODYSSEY.

Not to completely shirk tradition, within this fa...more

So I'm sorta in the middle in regards to how I feel about "Ascension" ... It was well written, and well drawn out...so kudos to the writers for that...

But I wasn't too fond of the heroine. She pissed me off for most of the plot...she was just so freaking abrasive and aggravating....by the end she wasn't as bad, but I still couldn't like her......and her bff, a major secondary character was just a little too dainty and sweet for me to really like...I did like most of the other characters though.....more

Beware of Spoilers!

Ascension is the first full-length book by the conglomeration of Heather Waters and Laura Barone who make up Sable Grace. It’s the start of the Dark Breed series and it introduces us to Kyana who is a mix of werewolf and vampyre. Dark breed is the derogatory term some use to describe her and it seems only fitting for it to be the name of the series.

In the Dark Breed series the world is divided into several realms that are paralleled to one a...more

When I first picked up this book at the urging of a fellow reader I was very hesitant. It seemed to have the typical half vampire/ half werewolf heroine that so many paranormal authors seem to enjoy writing about; but I was surprised to find a witty heroine who stands out all on her own. It helped that instead of fighting the evil of her own kind she fought enemies of the gods. I don't know whether I'm a sucker for mythology or what, but I genuinely liked that Kyana (the main character) was work...more

I love a good paranormal romance and Ascension has all the qualities that make this type of book a fantastic read, plus it is unique, which adds to its element of greatness. The world that Ms. Grace has introduced to us is a place that is full of mythological and paranormal creatures, humans, and everything in between. The only issue I have with this novel is that the way the book begins had me thinking I was reading the second tale in the series. Once I realized this was the first story I could...more

Not only is Kyana a rare breed, half Lychen and half Vampyre, but she is also the last of her kind. She does not have a big love for all mortals, but she is determined to prove her worth by working for the Order of Ancients and saving the ones she can. Kyana's latest assignment is to recover a key. It seems someone got a hold of said key and has opened the gates to hell. Now all manner of the Dark Breed are crossing over and they will wreak...more

This is Book one in new urban fantasy début, it's labelled as a paranormal romance, but it's foot is set firmly in the urban fantasy genre.
I really enjoyed the beginning & opening salvo, the world depicted is intricate & original, the plot blending myth & all fantastical seamlessly. The first chapters grabbed my attention & pulled me under. The plot is dark & enticing, what spoiled it for me was when the romantic element was introduced, the story just did not need it, the lo...more

As with most Urban Fantasy novels the worldbuilding is crucial to the story, especially with a new series, and it can be easy to get buried in the information overload that comes at the beginning of the book. I did feel a bit overwhelmed at the start but I attribute that more to my switch from PNR to UF than anything else, although it is something to be aware of. The combination of paranormal with Greek mythology is well done and not anything that has been done a zillion times before, maybe insp...more

In Ascension, we get the mixture of Urban Fantasy, Paranormal and Greek Gods all rolled into one book! In the debut novel by Sable Grace, action is brought with different types of creatures and Gods mixed together.

Unfortunately, I had a hard time enjoying this book. With an overdose of paranormal creatures and too much story to be told, I couldn't find a foothold on the book to base any feelings for the characters on. If there wouldn't have been so much going on with so many different creatures...more

I loved this book. There was never a dull moment with the non stop action and romantic friction causing all the right kind of tension I expect in a good book. Though "Ascension" would have been much better categorized as Urban Fantasy, the romance was certainly present.
The writers have created a world where all things myth and legend exist. It fit together seamlessly, all of the mythical creatures co-existing to produce a completely original story. I mean God's, Vampyre's, Werewolves, and zomb...more

Kyana is the last of her kind. She is half werewolf and half vampire. She lives in a world where Lycans and Vampires are part of the Dark Breed and are feared and reviled. She works for the Order of the Ancients, who are Gods. Kyana is the Orders best tracker and after the wall between Hell and the mortal world collapses it is up to Kyana to find the key to close the dimension. But Kyana is not alone in her journey, Ryker Are's son will accompany Kyana to prevent her from killing any traitors. K...more

When I opened this book, I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t read the back blurb but the front cover appealed to me.
To begin with it was a bit confusing to work out what was going on. In brief there are gods, demi gods, Lychen (werewolves) Dark Breed (vampires both good and bad) demons and leeches as well as the kinda slug icky creatures. Kyana is a half breed. She has overcome her bloodlust and now works as a tracker for Artemis Goddess of the Hunt. Her job is to find the people that the god...more

So I did make it to the end, but only because I skipped large chunks in the middle. This may explain why it seemed way more like urban fantasy than like paranormal romance to me... and urban fantasy of the lover's triangle sort, which is not my favorite. If you're looking for a book with a HEA, this isn't it.

The characters
Do you remember that part of Buffy where Faith was all psycho rage-girl? That's Kyana, the heroine of this series. I know some people like PNR heroines like that, but I tend to...more

When I first saw this book, I thought this would be more along more common urban fantasy type vampire books. I was mistaken and I was in for one great read! While we get the regular world that is under attack, we also have two other places referred to as Below and Beyond which were very fun to explore.

What I loved about this, aside from not being a typical vampire story, is that it incorporated the Greek Gods. I love Greek Mythology and I love paranormal books that can incorporate them into the...more

Ascension: A Dark Breed Novel by Sable Grace
Ascension is the start of an exciting new paranormal series from a debut author. Kyana is half Vampyre, half Lychen (Vampire, Werewolf) she works for the order, tracking demons that have escaped from hell so she can kill them or capture and return them to hell where they belong. Now all hell has broken lose, literally. Turns out there really are gates of hell and somebody had the key. Demons and all things that go bump in the night...more

Kyana is a half-breed: part Lycan, part Vampyre… the only one of her kind. And since the gates to Tartarus have been unlocked, she has been tracking the dark beings that have escaped and are wreaking havoc on the human world. She is part of the Order, a group of supernaturals devoted to fighting and policing those of their own kind who do wrong. Ky is a great tracker, and frankly that’s a good thing, since her job is really the only thing in her life, aside from her best friend Haven.

Reading this was a double edged sword. Because both ladies are my FB friends I would hate to have read their book and hated it. Not a good thing. But thank the powers-to-be I didn't have that problem. In fact, I really enjoyed Ascension. I liked that they took all the paranormal beings and came up with a different story line for them. The story was well put together and fast paced. I couldn't stop reading it once I started, and found myself wanting to get back to it when I was forced to put it d...more

This wasn't a bad book. It wasn't quite as great as I hoped it would be but not bad. However, when the next one comes out, I am willing to give it another go. The main problem I had with this one (I received the galley from NetGalley) is that it seemed to be a sequel. Too many times, past events were referenced without any explanation. Usually that means that I am coming into the middle of a series that is not quite a standalone and I need to go back to the beginning before finishing this one. T...more

I made it to 46% before I gave up. First 20% has massive information overload and no action. I was overwhelmed by the world. When things finally get going, I had already lost interest.

I also felt confused by the feelings between the hero and heroine. We are told there is this sexual chemistry between them but I never felt it.

The story just didn't flow together and did not keep my interest at all.

Ascension started off promising, but very quickly delved into the land of badly plotted, poorly written and cliched urban fantasy. If you care to hear all the dirty details, here they are:

World building was scant. There is some Greek mythology and lots of interesting ideas, but the novel presents it to us in the form of info dump. Throughout, I either felt I was in information overload, or I was struggling to keep up because while some aspects of this world were over explained, other aspects wer...more

When the gates of hell are unlocked, the world falls under attack by Dark Breeds and it is The Order’s job to protect each species in this world. When they realize they can’t do it alone, they call upon their most qualified member, Kyana.

Kyana is half Vampyre, half Lychen and in her world, she’s considered an abomination. But instead of living up to all the stereotypes of what everyone thinks she is, she gained control of her beasts and did something goo...more

This was a NetGalley read for me. Although the Author(s) are new and I hadn't recognized their names (it is two people under one pen name),it stood out to me because I enjoy reading books with a strong-kick-butt woman character in a paranormal or urban-fantasy setting. This book had all of that and more. It was quick paced and action packed with new mythology and interesting characters. It had some twists that I had not expected, and I always love that about a story. The only thing was, and mayb...more

Ascension is a great story from new author(s) and I look forward to continuing the series.

The story is about the world as we know it coming undone and how the Order of the Ancients with help from witches, gods, demigods and various others try to stop the decline.

Kyana is a half breed, part Vampyre and part Lychen and is a tracker in the Order of the Ancients – she is able to trace most anything that others cannot. Ryker is a demigod with a father who is a god and a mother who was human.

The Order of Ancients is all that stands in between the Dark Breed (evil demons, vampyres and shyfters) and the end of humanity after the gates of hell are opened. Kyana is half vampyre and shifter herself but she is a valuable asset for the Order and is sent on a mission to find the missing key and close the gates of hell. Joining her on this mission is Ryker, a demi-god who has a turbulent history with Kyana. They both will have to keep their unwanted desires at bay while their investigation l...more

Sable Grace is the writing team of Heather Waters & Laura Barone, long time critique partners and friends who came together by fluke to discover their voices fit together quite nicely during an experiment of "I'll write the first sentence, you write the next."
