Only read Frost's and Andrews's and both were good, but- TOO DAMN SHORT. :(

Frost’s entry is about a young woman lost while hiking, suddenly having her world turned upside down by a werewolf bite. She’s shifter now- but one thing might make this okay with her- she’s found she has a mate, and he was her’s at first sight.

Pack - 3 stars
This is Jeaniene Frost's novellita, a tale of a girl bitten by a werewolf while on a hike in the park. It was a good story while it lasted, but very forgettable after that.

In Sheep's Clothing - 4 stars
Meljean Brook's contribution was a rather sweet story about a werewolf who was abducted by a highway killer *shudders*. It wasn't bad at all, although I did notice that the werewolf acted more like a friendly domestic dog than like a werewolf :) Also a rather forgettable story.

"Under Her Skin" is a paranormal romance anthology by Jeaniene Frost, Ilona Andrews and Meljean Brook. I would call this anotholgy a light romance. Chemestry was good between all the characters but there are no actual sex scenes in any of the stories...more of a "fade to black" and you are left imagining what happens next.

There were three good stories in this book. Each of the authors has experience writing and was adept at creating a short story. I don't think any of the stories suffered too badly being short and they had concise plots.

This was a fantastic 99 cent deal. At 236 pages it was as long as a full length book, and I enjoyed all 3 short stories. All 3 stories were originally published in 2009's The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance. But did we really need a teenager on the cover of this collection?

The first story, Pack by Jeaniene Frost, is 88 pages long and the story of Marlee, a paralegal who is fulfilling her dream of hiking in Yellowstone National Park. After her hiking companions become injured and leave, she determinedly sets out on her own, only to be chased down and attacked by an angry pack of werewolves. Rescued by the pack enforcer, Daniel, Marlee is brought to their town for treatment and to wait and see if she will turn into a werewolf. Held against her will, she waits, fighting her attraction to Daniel. Marlee is a great character, and a realistic woman who finds herself in an impossible situation. Although hurt, angry, shocked and grieving the loss of the life she had, she retains her sense of determination and humor. The slow realization that she and Daniel are mates is sexy and believable.

In Sheep's Clothing by Meljean Brook is the shortest story at 53 pages. Although I liked the premise this story felt too short and the ending was forcibly happy. It's got an exciting opening though - Emma is returning home after 5 years away, when she is attacked by a serial killer. Before he can reach her she is able to call her former lover, Nathan, for help. But it turns out Emma is a capable werewolf, and she bites her attacker, unintentionally turning him into a stronger predator. So now she needs to tell Nathan she's a werewolf, rekindle their romance, and track a killer who's going through a change. The story idea felt fresh and I liked the characters, but the all-around perfectly happy ending happened too soon and left me unsatisfied.

Grace of Small Magics by Ilona Andrews is 89 pages long and entirely charming. Grace is a (mostly) human corporate headhunter who has always possessed small magical abilities. But she has just learned that her family is actually a very magical family in permanent servitude to a more powerful clan. When they are called, they must answer - and they are asking for Grace's help. Told by her uncle that she must perform a task for this powerful clan, Grace flies across country and is met by the powerful and very magical Nassar. As she is absorbing her family's true heritage, horrific past, and her current situation, Nassar tells her that she must help him survive a 'Running Man' scenario. The two of them must run a deadly, magical gauntlet against another team to save the lives of Nassar's nephew and nieces. Grace has 3 days to learn to use her magic, adjust ti being a servant, and deal with the extremely sexy and unsettling Nassar. I loved this story - it was a great blend of romance, unique paranormal world building, and really interesting characters.(less)

I bought this anthology as it has authors whose books I enjoy!

Jeanienne Frost takes a break from her vampire stories, and introduces a werewolf story in "Pack", where a woman lost in the woods gets attacked by wolves, and thinks she's halucinating when one changes to a naked man. Enjoyed this story, looking forward to seeing of Ms. Frost will dabble some more with werewolf stories!

Well. I'm pretty stunned.Of all the hundreds of reviews of this book everyone gives it a 4 or a 5. I must be missing something pretty major here.

I could say that maybe this trio of paranormal romance wasn't my thing. That said, I do adore paranormal romance. The Jeaniene Frost story is built up really well for a short story. I really liked it. The story really flowed.
This story is about a girl's hiking vacation gone wrong--wildly wrong--when she is attacked by wolves. The story doesn't waste much story on the actual attack but builds on the tension of her rescue and having to be captive until she heals. The only problem I had was I didn't want this story to end. I rarely read short stories. Nothing against them, but I prefer to read novels. One of the main reasons that I decided to give this a try is for the three authors. I absolutely love Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, and I've recently come across and enjoyed Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. I've not read anything by Meljean Brooks yet, but I've read reviews about her Iron Seas series and it is on my TBR list.

Each of these stories, however, are stand-alones and do not conincide with any...more I rarely read short stories. Nothing against them, but I prefer to read novels. I absolutely love Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, and I've recently come across and enjoyed Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. Each of these stories, however, are stand-alones and do not conincide with any of the author's ongoing series. With that being said. I did like all thre of the stories in this compilation. Sometimes an author may write a great series, but when they try to break out of that series and write something else it may not have the same magic.

Jeaniene Frost: To me, this story was probably the strongest of the bunch. It was nicely paced, and at the end I was really interested in learning more about the characters. Just enough was given away that we understood who the characters were without elaborating too much and then not being able to elaborate more because there's not enough space to do so. I though that this love story seemed less rushed than the others. Maybe I'm a little more lenient with this story because I do accept the whole "mate" thing when it comes to wolves. Like their version of love at first sight. After reading quite a few werewolf books lately I no longer find it strange and improbable.

Meljean Brook: This was the story I thought could have benefited from being longer. It was the shortest of the 3 stories but I really wanted more exposition. I really like "coming home" stories. For this one, however, I really wanted to know more about what happened before the events in the story. I do realize that given the length of short stories this is impossible. I think maybe because there was so little background information given (we really don't know the extent of the couple's relationship priviously) that is why I felt that the relationship re-formed seemed very abrupt. I didn't get the chance to want the characters to get back together. I did like the overall plot with the killer on the loose. The action / ending scene was very intense and nicely written.

Ilona Andrews: I have to applaud this story for the world building. It was so simple but it truly worked well, this world where magic existed, but wasn't out in the open. Again, I thought that the relationship attraction seemed very sudden. There maybe could have been a little more set up. For me, it just seemed that they were attracted to one another immediately (even if they didn't voice their opinions out loud and tried to deny the attraction). Again, I understand with a short story there has to be less detail, and the detail that is used has to be essential. Taking that into consideration, all of the novels did very well with their stories.

This compilation definitely has me interested in other stories these authors can do outside of the series they are known for already. Will most assuredly be reading more by these authors for years to come.(less)

I think perhaps I did take the Mammoth Book of PNR (previous publication of these stories) from the library, I just didn't remember it. That book was so spotty, I didn't enjoy all of it... don't think I even read everything. With this small, 3-story anthology, all by writers that I know and love, I decided to purchase for my Kindle to have as my very own.

That book was so spotty, I didn't enjoy all of it... don't think I even read everything. With this small, 3-story anthology, all by writers that I know and love, I decided to purchase for my Kindle to have as my very own.

The first story by J Frost - I liked the feel of the world this was set in. I got a sense of place very strongly from this short story, which I liked. I liked the characters - but it was so brief I barely even got to know them. And there were some details of the werewolf thing that just seemed absurd to me. Like the fully transformed wolves, talking in their own voices. I know, it's fantasy and I'm supposed to suspend my disbelief, but help me along here... I actually laughed when I got to that part. The other thing I enjoyed rather less about this book was the whole "fated female" theme. I tell you, after reading all those Breed books by Lora Leigh, I find it a tired premise for a romance! That may just be me. I did enjoy the story, it just felt too short. As always, I enjoyed Frost's humor.

The Meljean Brook short is in the middle, and again, it's so brief I barely noticed it! I enjoy Brook, and find her a particular talent at writing scorching hot, cerebral romance - there aren't many who do that as well as she. So this little short was just... too short. Not bad, not great. Just too short.

The third story carries the book, and indeed I think is nearly half the content in the collection. This little gem by Ilona Andrews, not unexpectedly, shines! It's set in a new and different world than any other Andrews book or novella, and yet the worldbuilding is distinct, real, and fantastic! Just as I have come to adore in all their other work. The characters are very 3 dimensional. They feel, they learn, they grow - and I really cared about them. Grace is a normal person, who gets caught up in a supernatural war on account of an old family debt she knows nothing about. Nassar is a "revenant" - someone who has stolen another person's body, and has both extreme supernatural powers, AND the power of Grace's family's debt of servitude. And yet, they connect and find something real in spite of this. It was an awesome little story and I recommend this anthology, really just for this one alone. This story alone was worth the $2.95!(less)

These short stories were in The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance. I'd also read Grace of Small Magics before on the Ilona Andrews website. At the Kindle price its a little less than $1 per story, and I think its a fair price. I'll re-read these again.

Grace of Small Magics by Ilona Andrews - I really love this story; believable characters, very alpha male with feisty heroine who doesn't know just how powerful she really is. Great action and romance.

Well well well… Encore un petit trésor offert par JF. Une nouvelle (trop courte arrrg) qui n’a aucun lien avec Chasseuse de la Nuit. Et laissez-moi vous dire que ça fait du bien ! On abandonne les vampires pour une meute de loups régie par des codes bien différents de ceux de nos amis d’outre tombe.
Le commun des mortels ignore tout de leur existence et les moyens utilisés pour garder le secret sont plus qu’efficaces : kidnapping, séquestration, meurtre… Les loups eux-mêmes sont soumis à des lois plus que rigides et quiconque les enfreint risque la mort.
C’est dans ce monde sauvage que débarque notre héroïne, bien déterminée à rentrer chez elle et à fausser compagnie à ses ravisseurs en fourrure. Mais manque de bol, elle a été mordue et doit donc patienter pour que la meute décide de son sort : si elle se transforme, elle devra rester avec eux pour le reste de sa vie, dans le cas contraire, elle devra mourir.
Mais ce serait trop facile hein, si elle les détestait. C’est là qu’intervient Gabriel, garde du corps de la meute qui la détient captive.
Marlee va développer des sentiments pour lui et inversement, et quand les sentiments s’en mêlent, ça complique tout c’est bien connu.

Marlee est une héroïne que j’ai bien appréciée, quoiqu’un peu trop lisse dans sa manière de voir le monde. Mais bon, tout le monde n’est pas Cat hein ^^
Gabriel par contre m’a tout à fait séduite, et je m’imaginai bien prisonnière dans sa cabane au fond des bois, livrée à ses instincts les plus basiques.. ok je sors*

En bref, une nouvelle sympa comme tout qui change du monde des suceurs de sang. A dévorer un soir de pleine lune ^^

I realize I have to be more lenient when judging short stories. It's more difficult to connect with the characters or build a suspenseful story line with such a limited amount of words. I try to keep that in mind so that I'm fair. Creativity isn't optional though, and surprisingly Jeaniene Frost's story was lacking the most in imagination. The first short story was just okay. But I have very, very strong opinions about the whole shapeshifter thing, and this contained some details that bugged me and didn't have as much of Frost's trademark snappy dialogue. My verdict for "Pack" is probably 2.5 stars. She's so good at what she does in her Night Huntress series, but this story didn't work for me. This one is also the most overtly romancey of the three--the other two are more on the urban fantasy side of the scale.

In case you might have missed it (and I totally did) this is three short stories that were previously published under The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance. Didn't matter for me tho, since I avoid mammoth anything. Now I have to admit that this was an impulse buy. I was on a high from Kate Daniels, saw Ilona's name and the price was right.

Pack (Frost)-3 Stars
A woman is hiking in the woods and gets attacked by a wolf. She is taken into their town, and they see to her wounds. Her rapid healing indicates that she will become a wolf. She is given two choices-join them or die. This story was just okay for me, not bad but not amazing or too original.

Well worth the .99 price. These are three of my favorite authors, and I was happy to get a sampling of their writing in one anthology. Andrews always puts together an interesting and slightly twisted short story. This was my first time reading werewolf stories from Brook and Frost; they are both better known for writing in other areas of the PNR genre. As for Andrews, they write some of the better short stories I've read - Silver Shark, Silent Blade, and A Mere Formality . Really good ss collect...more

I enjoyed this anthology but I will admit I got it for Jeaniene Frost's story! Having said that when I read it I did recognise both her story and Illona Andrews stories from previous anthologies. It was good though cause I'd loved Pack the first time I read it but had forgotten who had wrote it or what anthology I'd read it in (at the time of reading it Jeaniene Frost was an unknown author to me and I hadn't read anything of hers!). I got this book because of Jeaniene Frost. Her story is called "Pack" and is about a woman who gets caught by a pack of werewolves and is then forced to stay with them so that she can't reveal their existence. "Pack" by Jeaniene Frost

This was my favorite of the three stories. Marlee becomes lost in a National Park, and soon finds herself chased and attacked by a pack of wolves. She fights for her life when a strange, naked man rescues her. Her saviour is Daniel, a wolf enforcer from the werewolf pack, and he takes it upon himself to personally watch over Marlee as she recovers. The pack is concerned she may transform during the next full moon since she was bitten, so she is held in quarantined, which just happens to be Daniel's home. From here the story really heats up as Daniel is drawn to Marlee for other reasons beyond protecting her, and Jeaniene Frost knows how to hook the reader. The hostile relationship between Marlee and Daniel propel the story into a romantic encounter, and I loved Marlee's feistiness, never giving up the opportunity to escape. Though in her heart, we all know she wants to stay with Daniel. This short story has it all, villains, action and a main character who leaps off the pages. Would love to read more in this world.

The beginning of this short story was ripe with tension and I was hooked. Emma gets a flat tyre on the side of a road during a blizzard, and there aren't too many other cars passing by. It just happens that the one man who does stop to help is also a serial killer. The gutsy Emma bites the man to escape, but we later learn she may have just infected him with lycanthropy, seeing she is a werewolf. And then the story really kicks off. With the help of the Sheriff who likes her even if he has no clue she is a creature of the moon, they start hunting down the killer before it's too late. The premise is great, but I struggled to connect with Emma at times, and as such the short story wasn't as good as it could have been.

"Grace of Small Magics" by Ilona Andrews

One thing that amazes me about the stories created by the wife and husband team, Ilona Andrews, are the spectacular and imaginative worlds they create. They don't hold back, and for that reason, this short story was superb. I wanted more. :) Grace is called to perform a duty on behalf of her mother to Clan Dreoch, a magical family whom her own family are bound to in eternal servitude. Her duty demands she battles alongside Nassar, a powerful revenant and the clan's leader, against a rival clan. Grace is a gentle character, but does not back down from responsibilities, and with her own small magical abilities, she fights by Nassar's side. A must read, even if the story doesn't have werewolves in it... hmmm

Verdict: If you're looking for a quick read filled with romance and werewolves (in 2 of the stories), then 'Under Her Skin' is for you. I highly recommend it to all paranormal lovers.(less)

This is a great compilation of novellas!

Frost's writing style is very different in Pack, but I loved the setting in a remote wilderness community. A lost hiker's life is forever changed after being bitten by a werewolf. Centered on the protagonists journey of self discovery, Frost created a brand new world filled with intriguing characters that I'd like to see more of!

PACK - A quick, enjoyable "soul mate" tale that didn't break much by way of new ground.

IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING - I really enjoyed this modern werewolf story, particularly the twists regarding who is the predator and who is the prey. While the mechanism to separate hero and heroine prior to the story seems a little contrived, it sets things up for a nice reunion in this story.

Okay first off I know i gave the book a low star rating but it is a good read and I would in fact recommend it to any one spending a lazy day indoors and looking for something simple to read. It's just I didn't really get a chance to fall in love with the story and it's characters like I did with the Kate Daniel's series I personally think the book could have done with being just a little bit long it just felt like it ended to abruptly for me. As usual with anthologies, the stories feel a bit rushed. Still, I enjoyed the Frost story and the Andrews story. I think that the Brooks story would be a good intro for a new series--unless its already part of a series?? While I've read a book or two by her, I'm not that familiar with her work, so I suppose that its possible that this is set in an already existing world, altho the stories by the other 2 writes are not set in their known worlds.

I bought this collection because I have two of the authors on my to be read list, and I couldn't decide who to choose first. This seemed like a reasonably priced solution to my dilemma.

I wasn't a fan of the story "Pack" by Jeaniene Frost. The implausibility of how she came to be in that situation just ruined the whole story for me. A multiple day hike alone with no way to communicate or call for help? That's just ridiculous, for a woman or a man.

"Pack" by Jeaniene Frost- 3.5 stars

In Pack, we meet Marlee who, while hiking alone, gets attacked by werewolves. She's rescued from her attackers by Daniel, who also happens to be a werewolf. Marlee is taken back to the town the pack lives in while they wait to see if Marlee is going to chane at the full moon.

This short story was very different from what Ms. Frost normally writes. It was good, But seemed too short to develop the story properly. If Ms. Frost were to take it and make it into a full length novel, I think it would do very well.

"In Sheep's Clothing" by Meljean Brooks- 4 stars

Here we meet Emma, who left Pine Bluff six years ago after she was attacked and turned into a werewolf. She's returning now, having gained control over her wolf so that she can tell her former flame, Nathan, that she's a werewolf, and so she can settle back into the town.

Unfortunately, Emma is attacked by serial murderer who has been plaguing the town, and bites him. Now she and Sherriff Nathan need to find the murderer before he becomes even more dangerous as a new werewolf.

This story is great. Even though it is short, it alows for romance, suspense, and action. The characters were lacking a bit of development, but they were truly likable anyways. Great story overall.

"A Grace of Magic" by Ilona Andrews- 5 stars

Everything that Ilona Andrews writes is amazing, and this story continues that trend. Meet Grace, who recently learned that her family is indebted to another. She is called upon due to the debt to help the other family in place of her mother.

Grace meets Nassar, who is a revenant, or someone who has taken over somone else's body. Grace does not like that her family is indebted to this other family, but is willing to do whatever she has to to keep her family safe.

This story may be short, but it is complex, riveting, and keeps you entranced to the end. I sincerely hope that Ilona Andrews does more with this world, becase it is a gem.(less)
