On it's own, this is an excellent novel, but I would recommend that it be read alongside Suckenick's 98.6, because the complementarity it establishes is quite amazing. 1998.6 also serves not only as an interpretation, but also an application of 98.6.

I didn't read 98.6 first, so I struggled with this one. Years later, I brought both books into a class I was teaching. The lesson: borrowing/stealing. Some passages from the beginning of the two texts are identical! I want to know more about this book, and 98.6--until then, I don't want to rate it.

Agreed. It serves as a solid commentary on graduate study, voyeurism and communal relations, but really needs to be read alongside Sukenick's 98.6, if only to celebrate how different the similarities really are.
