I loved it! It's way better than the first book, Just The Sexiest Man Alive as I found myself fully invested emotionally in both protagonists. At one point, I did start finding the H&H's professional feud exasperating but as soon as I felt that, the relationship took a detour and I was rooting for both J.D. and Payton all the way to their satisfying HEA.

EDIT 14/06/11 : In a good mood so I'm going to up my rating! It deserves it if I'm being honest.
I needed to read a book exactly like this. I wanted funny, easy-going and sexy... I got it. I find there are times when I just want to escape all the classics, all the vampires, werewolves, fairies and whatever else we're trending with now in the supernatural world, and especially all the Diana Gabaldon (you know I love her really but 1,300 effing pages!). When combining humor with romance, a good writer leaves you with a smile on your face. A great writer leaves you with a smile on your face AND a grin in your heart. That's just what "Practice Makes Perfect" by Julie James did for me. The characters are memorable, their interaction spicy yet still G-rated, and their happily ever after left me with a $#@t-eating grin on my face.

WOW! I loved it, loved it, loved it!
Something About You and A Lot Like Love are two of my favorite contemporary romances and overall reads so far this year and made me an avid Julie James fan. This turned me into an outright rabid, crazed groupie who wants to follow Ms. James around like a puppy, fetch her lattes, shine her Jimmy Choos, and bond with her over martinis. Actually more between a 2.5 -3. Leaning more towards three stars.
Nowhere near as good as SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. I even considered giving it 2 stars at one point.
But it does have great banter.
I laughed. And since I really don't get to laugh enough - this one gets extra brownie points.
Sexual tension? Hmmm. Interesting but didn't blow my mind.
Oh, and our boy here was quite the sexist pig, which was quite infuriating at times.

As you can probably guess by the cover, Practice Makes Perfect is a romance novel. The first official romance genre novel I’ve ever read. The closest I got before was with sentimental, saccharine stuff like Nicholas Sparks, which, in the end, felt unrealistic and sickeningly sappy to me. The rest I owe to literary snobbery and my distaste of graphic sex scenes. So I stayed away, until I started hearing awesome things about Julie James from around the blogosphere, including from bloggers and frie...more

This was an excellent romantic comedy in the he said vs. she said style. I loved the characters and the dialogue. It had some of the funniest scenes I've read recently in a book -- especially the embarrassing court scene with the thong. Only area for improvement was that it was a tad predictable. Sex scenes were mentioned, not graphic. All in all, a very good read!
I also loved Something About You by the same author.

Whew. I finally got around to reading this. And now that I’m done, I’m really, really sorry for not reading it sooner. Damn! Maybe it wasn’t as “funny” (I mean the LOL moments) as Just the Sexiest Man Alive, but it was still one of the best contemporary romances / romantic comedies I’ve read in last few years.

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are lawyers working at the same firm and both competing for a promotion. Very funny and enjoyable. It has that love/hate relationship going that really keeps you on your toes.
I don't know if it's because I was a Speech & Debate/JSA nerd, or that I grew up wanting to be Clair Huxtable, or maybe I just watched too many old movies when I was younger, but to me, chemistry is about everything that is unsaid when you're bantering back and forth. It's the passion and intelligence behind good conversation.

Okay, so to say that I really really liked it would be the understatement of the year because I swear by the Angel (Oops, don't mind my slip of tongue.. its Jace-mania from the Mortal Instrument series and which by the way does not, even a little bit, relate to the topic in hands but just a work of my wildly imaginative side. You must probably think I'm crazy. Oh, well.) that I absolutely, irrevocably loved it!

Practice Makes Perfect is my favorite of all Julie James's novels - and I've read all of them. Seriously, this is just perfect. Perfect. I can't remember the last time I gave an Adult Contemporary Romance novel a solid 5 Stars, but this story was just too good. It starts out as an office rivalry between Payton and J.D., both highly successful lawyers for whom there is only one promotion spot. Yet, what neither of these two expect is to start to fall for each other and from then on, its a battle...more

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are two associate lawyers who have worked in the same law firm for the last 8 years. Both are two hard working individuals who are fantastic at what they do. That is where the similarities end. Payton and J.D. have a healthy dose of competitiveness to their relationship and are always trying to out perform the other. Recently they have been assigned to the same case and will have to learn to work together. Not only that they are both up for partner and have been t...more

Julie James never ceases to amaze me with her sarcasm in every book. Well, the fact that she was a lawyer may have a thing to with it but still. I love her way of writing, too bad she only has 2 books out and published.

I suppose one might classify this as a cheesy romance novel....after all, the cover is HORRIBLY cheesy. I almost didn't even pick it up because the cover was bad. However, I have read a number of good Austen rewrites that had covers that were just as bad (and some bad rewrites with beautiful covers), so I figured it was worth a try.
With that said, I truly enjoyed this story. And I don't know that I would call it an Austen adaptation. There were no Jane/Bingley or Wickham/Georgiana storylines, an...more
