Storm Over Warlock is classic Andre Norton space opera. A young man who has been typically underestimated proves to have skills highly valuable to the situation in which he finds himself: alone on an alien planet, attempting to make friendly contact with the natives and avoid the enemies pursuing him. Sounds kind of like the plot of The X Factor, doesn’t it? And yet the story is totally different.

Shann Lantee is an undersized, street-smart Terran who, despite being poor and uneducat More...

In some ways when reading one Andre Norton novel is like reading all her novels. When I checked out her Wikipedia page I found this on recurring themes.

"Norton started out writing juvenile historical fiction and adventure, and then moved into fantasy and finally science fiction. Again and again in her works, alienated outsiders undertake a journey through which they realize their full potential; this emphasis on the rite of passage continued her association in many readers' minds More...

Frankly, I learned a lot of my zoology from Norton. This book was my first encouner with wolverines, and what I know about them is little more than what's discussed here.

This is not the edition I have, but that edition is not shown here. It's a 1973 printing, with a picture of an insectile life form on the cover (maybe a Throg?).

Note that Norton's basic assumption that there were people who couldn't be negotiated with (and therefore were legitimate candidates for genoc More...

Lantee, the junior member of an advance Survey team from Earth preparing a planet (Warlock) for human settlement, is the lone survivor of an attack by the vicious alien Throgs. He faces difficult physical challenges to survive in the wild with two intelligent wolverines, and joins up with a senior Survey officer to attack the Throgs. But what about the strange dreams and the possibility of an indigenous alien race?

Great descriptions of an alien planet. Terse, evocative writing style. More...

I'm reading this book in a Kindle edition from. The publisher has bundled this story along with 6 others.

The original publication date for this was in 1960. It is one of Andre Norton's books that I never saw and never read.

I'm giving it only 3 stars because compared to SF books written in the last couple of decades it just doesn't stand up, but it has some very good points even though it is truly a period piece. It was probably intended to be a YA book, although it also p More...

I just recently found out that Andre Norton was actually a women. That has nothing to do with this review other than I think it’s really cool. Now, on to the review:

I’m actually a Norton/classic Sci-Fi fan, but I just had a really hard time getting into this book. I love the wolverines, I even like the main character, but the plot just wasn’t moving along for me. Personally I think that her other works are better, and if you’re looking to getting into some of her books I would go w More...

This is pretty standard Andre Norton. A young protagonist who has been on the wrong side of the system, comes through and is made strong by it. Placed in the wilderness with some kind of animal companion(s) and hijinks ensue.

In this case the animals are Wolverines, the planet is Warlock, and the protagonist is Shann. He sees his colony destroyed by invading aliens and sets off on a quest to survive on his own. In the process he makes discoveries that change the human view of Warlock fo More...

A 1960 Andre Norton YA story. Even by the standards of fiction aimed for juvinile audiences, this one was a tad disappoitning. The characters were pretty much all one-dimensional and the story was just about the hero v. various critturs, aliens and witches. Pretty shallow. I may not read any of the sequels.

This was one of the first science fiction books I read. I was completely blown away by it as a kid. I found it at the local library (with the same cover shown) and I must've taken it out at least three times.

Sometime in third grade the entire school was told to dress as a character from their favorite book. I dressed as Shan Lantee, in my purple jumpsuit with "SURVEY" printed across the back in black electrical tape. Not a single person in my school had any idea who I was. More...

How do very alien species communicate and eventually work together? When Norton writes of an alien, they are indeed alien.

I discovered Andre Norton in high school and read thrlugh as many of her books as I could, but she kept writing the so fast even I(read500 words a minute) could not keep ahead of her. Storm over warlock Is a perfect example of Norton, telpathic aliens, animals and people in the most amizing settings. If it is by Norton I'll like it.

WOLVERINES! All snarly and snuffly and into burying half their kill for later. They are not the focus of the books, just sidekicks to Norton's standard intrepid kid adventurer.

Also some wyverns, I guess? And wishes might come true and they fight beetle people and I pretty much dug this.

A few interesting ideas in this sci-fi book. The fact that the Throgs were irredeemable was something that could have been investigated further to give the story more depth. Saying that, the characters were interesting and likeable.
