I can't decide what was worse: the writing quality or the plot of the book? The writing was rough but mostly functional. Amanda Hocking will never be accused of having pretty prose... or character development, but more on that later. The writing is utterly devoid of any emotion. Things happen and the character reacts -- period. There's no tears, no wibbling, no real internal thoughts. In the aftermath of any event the main character, Remy, shrugs off what went down as necessary and that's all. H

Holy Hell! This is a short read but it packs a lot of punch. Not since the Alien films have I come across such a strong and incredible Heroine as Remy. Between her and the aptly named lioness, Ripley, whom Remy kind of picks up along her across state venture to find her brother, there is an abundance of totally brutal feminine power. It is no wonder Ripley has such an affinity for Remy...she recognises another with the heart of a lioness.

One thing I've learned about owning a Kindle is you get a chance to read free or really cheap books from authors you might never have discovered on your own. This is one of those books. I read it in two days...two really busy days and I had to try hard to squeeze in the time so it definitely held my interest.
Zombies aren't usually my thing. But I enjoyed this fast-paced read. Here is what I liked: Some good character development. Lots of action. The dialogue was believable once yo More...

Nineteen year-old Remy King is traveling across zombie infested lands to find her little brother, Max King. They were separated when the last quarantine compound they were residing in was over run by zombies. Along the way Remy meets a few other survivors and together they try to reach Max at another quarantine facility up north.

I am thoroughly convinced that this is how the world will end: Zombies. I have this strange fear and fascination about them so I try to procure as much books as I can about these rabid, virus-infested creatures. I've been lucky to have enjoyed what I've read so far. Unfortunately, I encountered so many problems with this book.
I'm finding it hard to write about the cracks in the plot without spoiling one of the major conflicts in the book. Suffice it to say, whatever inconsistencies I More...

What can I possibly say about this book other than “meh”? I’ll give it a go but “meh” basically sums this up.
I downloaded this to read because a) it has zombies in it and I have a particular penchant for these undead and cannibalistic creatures, and b) it was free.
This is a very easy read but that is down to the rather wafer thin plot and extremely coarse use of language and writing style. The lack of a solid plot only serves the (lack of) quality in the writing to an ad More...

MICHELLE'S REVIEW:
RATING: 5 Tatum and Lazlo stars!!!
Firstly I would like to show you Amanda's original cover for this awesome zombie book. I really do like her new one up above. Gives me a face to Remy's character.
If you don't know of Amanda Hocking, never read any of her work, well have a nose around this blog and you will see that I am a huge fan. Go on....this review can wait....but make sure you come back to this exact spot!!

I won this book in a contest at Vamps, Were's & Cassay blog. It was sent to me SIGNED by Amanda Hocking herSelf (love it)!
I am not a zombie fan. Well, I was not until I read this book. Oh my gosh I loved this book. I could not put it down. I really honestly could not. I loved this book so much.
I fell in love with the characters, RIPLEY & even the zombies (well, not love but they are critical to the story)!
I highly recommend this book. If you are a zombie love More...

So, previously, I’ve reviewed Amanda Hocking’s My Blood Approves series, which she has self published on Amazon.com, for very reasonable prices. As a result, and the avid user of Amazon’s low priced Kindle book store, I went on a hunt for other books she had written and found myself purchasing Hollowland.

I loved this book. It had everything I love, relatable characters, great action sequences, and a sweet love story.
I didn't give it 5 stars for a couple reasons. One was because there were quite a few errors in my ebook. Nothing big or really bad, but it did take me out of the story for a second. Also, I did find Remey a bit too harsh at times, but I could understand her reasons behind her behaviour.

I liked this story. It was clever, well thought out and kept me entertained. It deserves a solid four star rating. However...
The Kindle version was filled with typo's. Not the usual kind with spelling and punctuation errors but the extraneous kind with extra (or even missing) words scattered here and there. I stopped counting them when I hit thirty. It caused me several times to stop reading and backtrack through previous pages and chapters to try to make sense of these new alien More...

Okay, I really loved this book. I found it very refreshing and was hooked right away. Remy is a great protagonist and I found myself rooting for her from the beginning. The story itself is great, unique - rather reminiscent for me of "The Hunger Games", in the sense that it had that great sense of desperation and kill-or-be-killed mentality. I enjoyed that Amanda Hocking was not afraid to be a bit dark and for me this was really more of an adult series than young adult. Very nice surpr

I really wanted to like this novel, because I am so impressed with what Amanda Hocking has done with her career. I like to support self published authors, and reading her other works, I read this with an open mind and excited blood running in my veins. I'm a sucker for anything zombie, so I was super pumped to read this.

Loved this book! Nothing better then a butt kicking girl in a apocalyptic zombie world. The zombies are fairly realistic, the back round while kinda vague is fairly realistic. The book addresses a lot of issues I've found with zombie movies and books, like for instance, they rot and get weaker after they haven't had food for awhile. It's something I always thought should be added to a zombie story, after all, everything gets weaker if it doesn't eat. The main character Remy is both cruel and lov

I loved the sound of this book. Zombies, post-apocalyptic wasteland, and vagabond survivors…yep, pretty much right up my alley. Or, so I thought.
I have read other works by Amanda Hocking and found her writing to be very entertaining, but HOLLOWLAND just didn’t manage to hold my attention. The writing style is very straight forward and not overly poetic which is perfectly fine considering the genre, but when compared to similar books on the shel More...

I did, surprisingly enjoy this book. It was free, and since I have a nook I downloaded it off of smashwords. Barnes and noble has it for like 1.99 or something. It's free for kindles too.

So this was my first zombie book, and I have to be honest I was surprised by how much I liked it. I've had a bit of a zombie obsession lately since my dad started watching The Walking Dead, which is a really cool show on AMC. It's a show all about a group of humans trying to survive after a zombie apocalypse, and you can't help but get emotionally attached to them. I want to know what happens now! If you don't mind some graphic blood and guts, you should check it out. There is definitely some ma

A pretty darn good Zombie Apocalypse novel, especially since I picked it up for free on the Nook but I think that I saw it was $0.99 now. I'm especially impressed that it comes from an indie writer and I plan to check out some more of her work, most likely starting with the sequel to this one which is already out. The plot was pretty stellar, and I like the originality that was Ripley. (At least it was original to me.)

Hollowland starts out with nineteen-year-old Remy King waking up to the sound of a siren. We find out she’s in a compound near Las Vegas and Zombies have invaded the once-safe enclosure. Her only thought is to leave the room she shares with several younger girls and go find Max, her eight-year-old brother, who is housed somewhere in the same building.
Some girls follow her, while the others follow protocol and barricade themselves in their rooms. Downstairs, Remy and her companions f More...

Hollowland is to literature as SPAM is to meat. Technically, SPAM is real meat...and yet, we all have our suspicions. I also happen to like SPAM. It’s cheap, delicious, and handy to have around during the Zombie Apocalypse, which is the subject of this fictive little romp through Zombie-torn America. I had heard about Hocking’s work from others, and I knew there would be typos up the yin-yang, and that reading this wouldn’t exactly broaden my cerebral horizons. I didn’t realize, however, that re

I will start out with the fact that I love Zombie books because they always make me think of how I would survive the end of the world. The author makes the story so believable that it caused me to question why I bought a house with so many windows. Now I want to lock my doors, and possibly buy a gun just in case there is a zombie outbreak soon.

Hollowland is the first book in the series The Hollows by Amanda Hocking. The book follows Remy as she travels across a post-apocalyptic Earth to save her brother. The book is written from her perspective, and handles the often generalized zombie survival genre with tact and intelligence. Maybe due to watching the entire first season while reading the book, but I drew some heavy parallels between Hollowland and AMC's series The Walking Dead.

3.5 stars. I read this as a challenge, which was to read an author that I had never read before, which was "linked" to one of my favorites. My favorite is Richelle Mead, and Amanda Hocking was recommended as an author that I might like as a result. Since this was a freebie on Amazon, I decided to give Hocking and this book a try.
I did enjoy the story; however, it was much darker and more grotesque than I am used to, or than what I prefer. An infection has begun, causing p More...

I feel bad judging this novel too harshly. It is, after all, self-published, and at ninety-nine cents, the entertainment I derived from it supersedes what I've derived from books I've paid a lot more for.
In the interests of truth and justice, I'll try to be frank but fair.
First, you have to take this as pure camp. The MCs run around with a zombie-eating lion pet. All credibility goes out the window when A FREAKING LION joins the party. Second, half the book is spent fighting More...
