Pretty good reference book to serve as a starter's guide for researching and getting a dog. I don't agree with some of the premises regarding nutrition and health though, such as brushing the dog's teeth instead of feeding it raw bones (nature's method of flossing and cleaning teeth). Some of the advice regarding vaccinations and neutering fail to take into account the potential dangers of over vaccinating and stripping the dog of beneficial sex hormones (via conventional neutering) that could g ...more

I didn't have high expectations for this HUGE book, but am well pleased with what I have read so far. It seems very thorough and the writers are the same people who are writing the dozens of other books about dogs and puppies. I may buy it ($20) for its chapter on health care and emergency treatment (which I can't bear to read now, but would be glad for a simple reference when/if I need it.

A bit disappointing because it didn't go into as much detail as I'd hoped. It's more a book aimed at someone with a moderate understanding of dogs and not a "dummy" as such.
