Read "Reading Racial Fetishism: The Photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe" by Kobena Mercer in this anthology. I think he reads too much into the subject matter as one could change the black men for white in the same contexts and come to different conclusions, but Mapplethorpe was sexually attracted to black men, just as others are for Asians, or still others for their own race, etc. It has nothing to do with "hypersexual" being an aspect of a specific race. Sexuality IS a power struggle regardless ...more
