Pete the Cat books rock. Didn't know anything about them, until I saw a Pete the Cat class at my local library for my K-5 grade and signed him up. Then I checked out some of the books, to see if he'd like them. Not only did he love them, but my 2 yr old twins do as well. He's laid back, cool, and groovy with beautiful and colorful illustration. All three of my kids love finding the yellow bird that follows him around on every page. (Makes me think of my Richard Scary books I had as a kid where I...more

“Here comes Pete
strolling down the street,
rocking red shoes
on his four furry feet.”

Pete completely charmed the socks (and shoes) off of me! :D From that look in his eyes to his cool, cool ways, Pete’s story made me giggle and grin from ear to ear!

Pete’s tale of jumping right into new things and adventures will show readers of any age how we can land on our feet if we relax and go with the flow!

This book can be a little bit awkward to read since Pete the Cat sings a song throughout the book. But this became a quick favorite when we checked out the website to hear the book read aloud complete with the song. (www.harpercollinschildrens.com/peteth...) The kids danced and danced to the music and were quickly reciting the book along with the recording.

Pete the cat is just too cool while he is in school. Pete is just beginning school, and has some truly awesome school shoes that he is obsessed with. All day long as he discovers new things about school, he never worries or gets intimidated because he has not done something before, mostly because he knows his school shoes are cool. This story incorporates great practices for younger readers by including questions about where Pete is (i.e. the library, the lunchroom). The rhyming of the words giv...more

This is a great series written by Eric Litwin that makes kids and adults want to get up and sing and dance while they read the book! I love books that can incorporate many ideas and actions into one story and this book does just that. The book allows the reader and the audience to sing, follow patterns and practice their colors all while following Pete the cat through his day at school. Pete the cat is wonderfully illustrated and helps draw readers into his world. The story keeps the r...more

Move over Welcome to Kindergarten because Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes is my new favorite book for new Kindergarteners. Maybe I was a little biased because after the classroom, the first place Pete visits in his school shoes is the library! Although he's never been there before, Pete doesn't worry (goodness no!), instead he finds his favorite book and sings his song "I'm reading in my school shoes!" He visits other important schoolyard locales (the playground, lunchroom) and does...more

Oh how I love these stories. Pete the cat is so cool. His books incorporates rhymes as well as questions that children can answer while reading the stories. Pete the cat rocking his cool shoes can also introduce colors to younger children who are learning their colors.

SUMMARY:
The child-familiar character, Pete the Cat, is starting school. Rather than be a (fur)ball of nerves, he rocks and sings and dances his way through every new situation that he encounters. From the lunchroom, to the school bus, to the library, and playground, Pete shows that with a positive attitude it is easy to feel comfortable in new settings.

EVALUATION:
An excellent book for both interactive and shared readings. Pete sings the same song for each new experience, making it easy for kids...more

My 5 year old cousin was the first person to introduce me to Pete the Cat. In this story Pete is going to school for the first time, and as he encounters all the different areas of the school "Does he worry?/ Goodness no..." I would use this book in a kindergaten class on the first day of class. It would be fun to have them interacting and trying to guess where Pete ends up by the clues given.

I gave this book 5 stars because it subtly motivates children to want to go to school. In this book, Pete does a lot of things in his "school shoes." In each situation Pete is in, he sings a song which only changes slightly if he's doing something different:

For instance, when Pete paints in art class he sings, "I'm painting in my school shoes, I'm painting in my school shoes, I'm painting in my school shoes, I'm painting in my school shoes!" When Pete is doing Math, he sings "I'm adding in my s...more

My grade schooler thought this book was hilarious. He loves cats and we read this right before school started again. I love the positivity of Pete the Cat- no first day of school jitters for him as he sings his song and rocks the whole day in his fabulous red shoes. It’s a wonderful back-to-school book for young kids, and especially encouraging for kindergartners.

Pete the Cat rocks in his school shoes through all the halls of the school and is a great addition to the Pete series books. I love this book for Kindergarten kiddos. I think it would be a great book to lead into discussions about where these places are in their own school. It would be a good entry into a writing prompt of what is each child's favorite place in the school and what do they do in their school shoes.
My favorite part of Pete the Cat is the abundance of YouTube videos and songs. The...more

Pete has returned with some hot to trot shoes... So so cute and attracting much attention both positive and negative... Maybe some are jealous... Who's to say... But as usual Pete wins the daddy cause he's PETE! And we love him!
This is a way for kids to get to know him better and to know themselves better as well.

Another book in the series. It takes childn to the school setting which is familiar with them. It teaches children to enjoy school and all the activities in school. It's all good!

Really, there is only one Pete the Cat, and this isn't it. However, I will make room for this one, especially because it shows someone heading to school with NO NERVES.

I was worried I would not like the sequel as much, but the school material is great and Pete's personality shines through.

Love this book - Especially that the first place he visits in school is the LIBRARY!

Review: Let me begin by saying, I love Pete the Cat! This story in particular is wonderful. It talks about school. It can used for children who are struggling or have a hard time staying at school. it is so light but, give a good message. It is good for children because it has a song. Children really enjoy music.

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin, illustrated by James Dean follows the school day of the rocking Pete as he strolls the school in his red shoes.

Pete the Cat boards the school bus, attends class, visits the library, enjoys his milk and fish sandwich in the lunchroom, and has recess on the playground. He rocks all day, while singing, painting, adding and writing. Exitng the bus, his Mom greets him and he looks forward to school the next day.

This is a great book for kids to sing along during a read aloud, "I'm rocking my school shoes," because it is easy to remember, it repeats a lot throughout the book, and it makes it so much fun for the kids! This is a very entertaining book, and I really enjoyed the illustrations. I would recommend this book for adults to read to children ages 4-7 and older children would definitely enjoy reading it to themselves too! This is also a great book to read to the class at the beginning of the school...more

I wanted to review this title because it is one of the titles that I have chosen to read to my group of first graders for our literature sharing assignment. (As far as I know it isn't in the text, nor has it won any awards, I'm really doing the review for my own benefit.)

I just LOVE the Pete the Cat series, and I love the jazzy tunes that I can read them in! :)

Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes is about a calm and collected cat who heads off to school. He learns all about the different spaces and places a school has to offer, but he's never overwhelmed. Why? Because Pete has on his school shoes! After getting used to the bus, library, lunchroom, and playground, Pete is ready to do it again the next day, because "it's all good!"

Recommends it for: parents reading with their children
This book is responsible for us discovering the videos of people reading books aloud on YouTube. We wanted to listen to the song, as advertised on the cover, but when we typed in the website address, we got an error. So we just googled it instead and found a few renditions of it on YouTube, which of course led to us watching other videos of books being read aloud. Some have animation, some just have the pages of the book featured, and still others focus more on the narrators. It was loads of fun...more

For the love of Pete the cat! Pete the Cat, I’m Rocking in My School Shoes is included in the Pete the Cat series. Pete the Cat, I’m Rocking in My School Shoes is a great book for all children and can be enjoyed most by children in primary grades. In this book, Pete the cat visits the library, cafeteria, playground, and many other places at school. Pete never has a dull moment in school in this book. The author gives the readers a message of not worrying with the staple motto, “It’s all good”.

Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes is a great book to start off the school year with the younger grades. This book will work especially well with kindergartners who are coming in new to the school and may be a little scared and unsure of their surroundings. Pete the Cat takes us through the various parts of the school like the library, lunchroom and playground. He does this through a rhyming and repetitive song: “I’m rocking in my school shoes, I’m rocking in my school shoes, I’m rocking in...more

I really do love all the Pete the Cat books. I think they're creative and provide excellent opportunities for classroom participation. This one is great for back to school reads in the beginning of the year, but all of Eric Litwin's Pete the Cat books can be loved year round. I love Pete's groovy and laid back demeanor as he goes through his daily activities. The message of staying cool, calm, and collective is not one that I've successfully translated for readers as young as toddlers as in thes...more

Pete the Cat is a new sensation that's sweeping the nation! Eric Litwin may be new on the scene, but he sure is making a splash! With the books you can go to the website and download the songs that go with them for free! The beautiful and color-filled illustrations keep children attentive and engaged. The repetition of the books lets the children anticipate the next lines and gives them confidence in reading it. The lovable character of Pete the Cat is one that children just go nuts for! As I read this book to you, I want you to think about the various places that Pete goes in his school. Based on the author's clues, I want you to try to guess where Pete is going next. When you think you know, raise your hand. Be prepared to tell a neighbor what clues helped you to determine Pete's next location.

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes, written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean, is nominated for the 2013-2014 South Carolina Picture Book Award.

Unlike most of my students, I'm not a huge fan of Pete the Cat. I've read a couple of the books, and they just didn't do it for me. This one, though, was a little different. I can see Rocking in My School Shoes being hugely popular as a beginning-of-the-school-year read aloud. I'm hoping to read this book at all of our first-of-year asse...more
