The first book I ever read about a place where I lived that was recognizable as the place I lived and not someone else's received ideas about what the place I lived was supposed to be like. A key text, in other words.

Mickey Hess is the author of Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory, The Nostalgia Echo, and Is Hip Hop Dead? In December 2015 HarperCollins will release the paperback of The Dirty Version, the Ol' Dirty Bastard biography Mickey co-wrote with Buddha Monk. Mickey is Professor of English at Rider University in New Jersey.
