Mary Wine's Highland Hellcat is a Highland romance where the heroine--Brina--isn't very inclined to be obedient or subservient. Then again, she wasn't expected to be either--at least, not to any mere man. As the third daughter, she was raised to be a nun, and her father augmented her education by letting her learn to hunt and fish.

Then Brina finds herself kidnapped by her oldest sister's betrothed, and has a hard time coming to terms with wanting him instead of the Church. Personally, I wouldn'...more

Jun 06, 2012 Lucy rated it 3 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: people who like historical romance without so much drama
I chose this book because of the wonderful cover and also because the story seemed to be interesting.
I indeed found the story interesting though I can't give it more than 3 stars because of certain aspects.
First, I thought that the author would develop the plot a bit more.
Now that I am finished with the book, I am a bit disappointed because I think it lacks excitement. The plot is too simple!
I would love to see some drama like some sort of plot to ruin the relationship between the hero, Connor...more

Connor Lindsay has made a deal to marry Deirdre Chattan as an alliance, but she is no longer pure and has been defiled by Lindsay's enemy which means he cannot marry her because people will not believe their children will be his. So Lindsay kidnaps another sister, Brina, in Deirdre's place but this one was planning to be the bride of Christ so needless to say it is not all smooth sailing.

Most of the book are about Brina adjusting to life with Conner and trying not to break the oath her father ma...more

I’ve been wonderfully surprised with these Highlander books by Mary Wine. These are the first of her books I’ve read, and now I’d like to pick up others from her backlist. She has a wide variety to choose from. But I’m glad to find another author who writes intriguing Scottish Highlanders. That’s including heroines, despite my love of a totally alpha hero.

Connor has an agreement with the Chattan laird, needing the alliance to strengthen his backing for the eventual release of his young sister, w...more

In Highland Hellcat, Mary Wine introduces the three Chattan daughters. The romantic lead is the third daughter of Laird Chattan - the daughter promised to the Church at birth and raised to be self-sufficient, independent and to do without praise. All her life, her family and clan have been careful not to spoil her - she's rarely complimented, always worn white and rarely given physical affection all to get her ready for the spartan existence expected of nuns.

But when her eldest sister elopes wit...more

Readers first met the hero, Connor Lindsey, in To Conquer a Highlander where he was a charismatic rogue who was setting off to claim his rumored wayward betrothed bride. This book, Highland Hellcat, begins with Connor finding that his bride is no longer pure and in a dilemma of how to keep a critical clan alliance while satisfying the demands of the clan that relies on him to lead them during precarious times.

I was looking forward to this story because of the hero....to see him get his day in t...more

Mary Wine is a skillful storyteller who creates romantic tales full of intrigue, love and just enough flare of drama to keep readers flipping the pages.

Of three daughters, Brina has easily accepted the reality of her father’s promise to the abbey. Though she is feisty and strong-willed, Brina believes that she will bring some good to the church and Scotland. But when her sister Deirdr...more

This is book 2 in a series of highlanders, but you can just jump right in here. The hero in this book is mentioned in book 1 since he is a friend of that hero, but the couple from book 1 is not mentioned here. Only the hero that will be in book 3. So, no OCD troubles, you all know I like to talk about that.

Connor Lindsay is planned to marry Deirdre Chattan, but she has been naught and he is upset but still need the alliance but without people doubting if his children are his. So he does what eve...more

This is the first book by Mary Wine that I have read. I will tell you I will be reading more. Even thought I had not read the first book in the series I had no problem following the story. This is a well written romance with Drama, Intrigue, Spirit and Love.

This was a book I just randomly picked up at my library, I haven't read the first book because I didn't know it was a series but I didn't feel lost at any point.

This was a really good Scottish HR. The main character Connor is pissed because his future bride "dishonored" herself by sleeping with someone else. To console himself he steals another woman for his bride who was supposed to be going into the nunnery. Brina is incredulous that some big highlander thought he had a right to steal her, but...more

I was having one of those drab days and I didn't really know what to do to lift my mood. Then I spotted a copy of Highland Hellcat . I thought to myself that a man in a kilt and a little romance might be just the remedy I needed.

"Come, my beauty, we shall see if we can impress anyone tonight with our skill."

What a leading first line. Author Mary Wine had my attention. I was envisioning a darkly handsome highlander whispering those words to a bevy of buxom barmaids. Not to be, these were the very...more

Brina Chattan, as a third daughter, was raised to become a nun. When her older sister falls from grace, the sister's intended groom kidnaps Brina for himself. Brina finds that her life will not be the one that she was prepared for.

My only complaint is that the first few chapters of the book unnecessarily listed the Highlander characteristics that are typical in a Highlander romance (honor, watching after their women, fighting, being strong and stubborn, etc.). It was tedious for me.

Otherwise, I...more

Brina and Connor make a good couple. Great page-turning read. Full of action, romance, courage, honor, and old Scottish jacobite politics.

The second book of Mary Wine's that I have read in the Scottish highlands theme and she makes it easy to read and get into.

Connor finds out his intended bride isn't as pure as she is meant to be and that can't do for Laird who needs a pure wife to marry and give him heirs. So he decides to take her sister and what follows is Connor's refusal to give her up even though she is intended for the church and Brina who is torn between her honour to her father and the church but can't deny the feelings...more

At the moment I'm only about two thirds of the way through the book. I've read enough to know that it deserves five stars in my opinion. Connor Lindsey needs to forge an alliance with the Chattans and was suppose to do this by marrying the eldest daughter of the clan laird. However an act of dishonor on her part ruins his plans. So he abducts Brina the youngest daughter in hopes that she will agree to be his wife and the mistress of Birch Stone his family castle. Little does he know that Brina h...more

Mary Wine is a favourite author of mine and I always eagerly anticipate the release of a new novel. Highland Hellcat arrived in my post on Friday and I am so lucky it was a rainy Friday afternoon and all the kids sport was cancelled so that I could stick them in front of a dvd, order take-away and I could lose myself in "Highland Hellcat". I honestly didn't stop until I had reached the last page. Its fantastic. If you love a good highland romance then you will enjoy this novel.

The beginning was a good start then it went a little down hill from there. I really liked both the hero's and heroines characters but they bickered too much for me. The ending was good as was the bit of action that the story had. The loves scenes where not as hot as most of Mary Wines book's are but they were still well done. All and all I did like this book.

Another strong female character in a time where women had no rights and were considered property. She pretty much gave as good as she got. That eternal struggle between man and woman was very well written and it kept my interest. My only complaint is it ended and now I have to find another book to read

Read the first book of the series and liked it so I thought I would follow up with Highland Hellcat. Book wasn't as good as the first but all in all was still ok. I did however struggle to finish reading this book. Not because it was bad, but because the plot didn't really pick up or anything till nearing the end. Around 3/4 of the book I found to be very lacking and repetitious. If there was some more action, scheming and such involved in the plot earlier on in the book, it would have been much...more

Not a big fan of the second klidnapping and it took to long to explain and i didnt like it. I biane had been able to show her bow and arrow skills more, but i loved the book!!1 Love this author

Sensuous take on the abduction motif. Nicely done with a healthy dose of clan politics. Situated primarily away from court politics it has a nice overview of family duty and roles.

Highland laird, Connor Lindsey is looking for a wife who is innocent and one that will comply to all he says. But when he kidnaps Brina Chattan -- she isn't exactly what he was expecting. A wild side that refuses to obey or be tamed.

Highland Hellcat is entertaining. A fascinating read. You can really tell how much research was put into this book. Full of romance and intrigue. Exactly what I hoped for when I seen the title and cover. This was my first time reading anything by Mary Wine, and for m...more

Fun read, and some aspects to the storyline that I thought were a nice change of pace. Getting used to reading how the Highlanders talked - nae for no, etc - took some getting used to but a great summer read!

Mary Wine's (Scottish) books remind me a great deal of Julie Garwood's older romance novels. I have been devouring Ms. Wine's novels.
Katarsha Ridley
I love this book and the characters in it. Mary Wine is swiftly becoming one of my favorite authors.
