Trey was thinking about Luke, and how brave he was. He wished he could be that brave. But, if you thought about it, he never really got a chance. Until now. Trey is left stranded in front of Mr. Talbot's house as the Population Police rade it. He manages to survive just barly, hidding behind a flower pot until Luke comes for him. But he never does. Now Trey knows that something's up. So, he teams up with a boy named Mark Garner in order to find his friends and save them from the Popualtion Polic...more

Among the Brave
By: Margaret Peterson Haddix

There are many children in the planet that are the third child. Are you one of them? If so, living in this part of the world would have gotten you killed in a matter of seconds.

Trey, one of the protagonists in the book is a 3rd child. He just wants to get out of the dark from hiding and hide from the population police who would hunt him down and kill him. But he also wants to save all of the third children so they can be free and get out of hiding. Bein...more

This is probably my favorite book in the series. The protagonist is now Trey Jackson which annoys many of my students because they just want to know what is going on with Luke. However, Haddix continues to develop all of her characters and this portion of the story is Trey's as he and Luke's brother, Mark, set out to rescue Luke. Lacking self-confidence, Trey never felt he was brave or worthy until fate steps in and makes him do things he never thought possible. This novel features more action t...more

Again, I'm going to have to give a book in this series a 3.5 because I can't bring myself to give it 4 stars. Bummer!! This is book 5 in the series, and it is Trey’s story after he is dropped at Mr. Talbot’s house in the end of Barons. He thinks he’s there to get help from Mr. Talbot while his friends wait in the car, but when Population Police tear out of the garage with a handcuffed Talbot, and Nina and the others speed away from the house, he’s left alone, confused, and scared. He learns that...more

In this book, tensions rise as the Government is overthrown by the head of the Population Police, Aldous Krakenaur. People are starving and rioting. They are promised food if they join up with the Population Police to hunt down every single illegal third child who may be in hiding.

This book focuses on Trey; a timid third child who had never been outside of his bedroom before coming to the Hendricks school. His mettle is tested as he finds himself in situations unimaginable. He rescues Luke, Nin...more

I read this book out of order within the Shadow Children series, but there was enough back information to keep me reading.

In this world, third children are not allowed. They are kept hidden, sometimes living for years inside without any concept of the outside world. If discovered they are hunted down and exterminated by the population police. This book follows Trey, who is on the run and hiding after a killing in the previous book. He meets up with Mark and together they set out to find Lee, not...more

I was not sure what to expect when I realized Trey would be the protagonist in AMONG THE BRAVE (Shadow Children #5). He has had such a small role in the series thus far, and a weak one at that. But being that Trey’s character is so different then Luke’s gave a fresh perspective to the plot.

Book 5 picks up exactly where the pervious leaves off with Mr. Talbot being driven away in handcuffs while Trey hides behind a pot on his Talbot’s front porch. Not knowing the fate of his friends in the limo...more

I finished this yesterday and didn't write a review right away because I took a nap... so let me see what I can remember!

This was the fifth book in the Shadow Children series. I have liked all of the installments so far, and this was no exception. In this book, the perspective changed to a different third child, Trey. At first, I wasn't sure about him because he was wimpy and paranoid, but he came to his senses and adapted to change in the book. In this book, the Population Police take over the...more

Book 4 in the series was a bit annoying, so it took me a while to get to this one (book 5). It was worth it! I read it in one 2.5 hour sitting while too caffeinated to sleep last night. The 1st person narration is from yet another Shadow Child's persective to the overall benefit of the whole series. Fast paced, the plot was not as ridiculous as Barons (book 4).

This series is perfect for middle school students who love the fast-paced, non-stop action, every-short-chapter-ending-in-a-cliffhanger...more

Among the Brave was an inspirational, thrilling, and action packed novel filled with suspense and drama all at the same time. Not only is the main character a young boy, Trey, but a illegal third child that should not have been born. After living his whole life in hiding, being exposed to the real world mentally impacted Trey. With the government being overthrown, the new military based, monarch takes over everything needed to live and forces control over everyone, even the free people. With cra...more

Book 2 I liked this book because Margret Peterson Haddix's writing is full of suspense.
In this book Trey the biggest coward has to save his friend's brother and risk his life. This book is the fifth in the Shadow Children series. Just when the main character of the seires Luke thinks everyone is safe Trey is left alone at a house where his worst enemy has invaded. Trey has to overcome and face his fears. One, of the outdoors, two other people, and worst of all death. Trey almost gets caught by...more

My favorite of the 'Shadow Children' series so far, due to its main character, Trey, and Haddix's use of inner dialogue:

'Trey could never understand what people meant when their words and meanings didn't match up.

"That's called irony," he reminded himself. "I don't get irony. I admit it. Okay, Dad? Are you happy now?"

What goes on in Trey's head just seems so real.

Trey is a third child who has spent most his life isolated and indoors and now, orphaned by circumstances that baffle him, must find t...more

Among the Brave
By Margaret Peterson Haddix

In this book of the series, Luke takes Smits to Luke family home for Smits to live with them under a false idenity. The rest of Luke’s friends go to Mr. Tablets house and Trey has to go up to the house. Trey is really scared. Mr. Tablet answers the door and says he doesn’t want to buy anything. And a couple minutes later a car goes speeding from Mr. Tablets house with Mr. Tablet handcuffed in the car. Lukes friends get out of there too.

I don't remember very much about this book from the first time I read it.This book, thankfully, begins in a much more interesting fashion than its predecessor. This book wastes too much time on exposition. It's been established previously that Trey is somewhat of a coward. The author didn't need to waste the first 60 pages re-establishing that. I would've liked if the book had gone into the main storyline of the boys being at population police headquarters sooner. The character of Trey is very tir...more

This was the first book I read from the Shadow Children series. It is set up so it doesn't really matter whether or not you have read the previous ones. So if you want to read this one, or most likely any of the others, you should do it and not worry about not knowing background info.

rey is in danger and so are others like him…the unwanted third children. In order to keep the population in check, each family is only allowed a maximum of two children. Many have defied the law but end up in fear for their lives and their children’s. The third children have to hide away or risk being taken and killed by the Population Police. Trey stretches his limits as it becomes clear that he may be the only chance his friends have at escaping the police and their sinister activities.

This book takes place with a government that only allows people to have two children. Trey, a third child, is going to get help when the person he was going to, is handcuffed and taken away. Trey believes his friends were taken too and in prison, so he has Luke's (another third child's) Mark help Trey go find Luke and his friends, but Mark is captured and so Trey has to enroll in the population police, which are currently tracking children that are thirds down. He finds Mark by crawling through...more

This book talks about a boy that lives in a place that doesn't allow third-children. The boy, Trey, goes through many tough times and strives to keep up with what is going on. He encounters many emotional situations. I think that this book is fit for everyone and I really like it because there are a lot a surprises and great moments in this book

Trey has just seen two people murdered and he and his friends are off to Mr.Talbolt house. His friends are too scared to go ring the doorbell, so instead, they make Trey do it. When Trey finally rang the doorbells, Mr.Talbolt didn't seem to friendly. Moments after slaming the door in Trey's face, Mr.Talbolt is arrested by the Population Police. The driver in the limo that Trey and his friends rode in, drives off leaving Trey behind. Trey is a illegal third child and Population Police are coming...more

Trey has done one brave thing in his life: saving L's life at the end of the previous book. Now he is on his own out in the open world. He spent his first twelve years living in one room and never leaving, so just breathing outdoor air is an act of bravery for him. Can he find it within himself to save his friends who are in danger from the new (and worse!) Government?

The book Among the Brave by Margaret Peterson Haddix interest me a lot with their unpredictable events that happen to the main character. In page 31, I figured out that Trey's friend was an illegal children. Then he was followed by population polices, because his parents are captured by the police. He was helped by his friends named Mark, which helped him get to Mr. Talbot to help them.He gets help from his friends to save his other friend Luke. I really loved this book, how the children in this...more

It was amazing to see that Trey could become such a heroic figure from the beginning of the book when he began as a chicken to the end the fire hearted hero who wants to enter the population police to help destroy them from the inside out. Trey didn't know what to do when he was left alone on the porch at Mr. Talbot's house so he ducked behind the flower pot and hid from day break to dusk, that had me thinking of what a coward he was. But what really threw me off was when he sucessed at saving h...more

Okay. It is better than the last three. It is. But, well, I really couldn't suspend my disbelief. When the book starts, there are two classes: the Barons and the common/poor folks. And then the government gets overthrown from the inside, and within, get this, THREE DAYS, all of a sudden the country is now where parts of Europe were after SEVERAL YEARS of WWII. That's right: they've got camps full of prisoners all over the place, and the prisoners are pale and emaciated, and the people are all st...more

I thought this book was really good. I kind of don't like how the series of Shadow Children is switching from one character's point of view to another character's point of view. It really confuses me. Although I really like how Trey(the main character of this particular book) tries to be brave and save his friends who were trapped. I really hopes that Trey, Nina, Lee, Nedley, and other characters find a way to help fight with the Population Police to free illegal children(third children.) I reco...more

Trey might have been a big hero saving Luke's life, but he didn't have the courage to save all his friend's lives. After finding out they are all prisoners of the population police, he impersonates an officer to try and get them out. But when it looks like he's close, he finds himself of endangering not only him but all of the shadow children.

This book series I haven't read in a while, because I'm looking for one of the next books. Even though it's not fully in my memory, I still love this ser...more

"Among the Brave" is the fifth book in the series, Shadow Children by, Margaret Peterson Haddix, and is yet to be the best. The series Shadow Children is about a time were food supply and electricity is limited. People who the characters in the book call Population police who control everyone have created a law were having a third child is illegal to save the human species. The main character in the book named Lee or what he calls himself Luke on his fake ID to save his identity is a third chil...more

This book was extremely interesting because it kept me wanting to know what happens next. Its about how a boy and his friends try to seek help from a guy named Mr. Hendricks. Mr. Hendricks is this guy who helps save third children alive because the population police take control because they overthrew the government. So now that the population police have gained control, people are freaking out about how they will survive because theirs no food. Without any food third children are expected to di...more
